Iran condemns Trump's ‘disrespectful and unacceptable' comments on Khamenei

(Pool/AP pic) TEHRAN : Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi condemned Saturday the 'disrespectful and unacceptable' comments from Donald Trump, after the US president claimed to have saved Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from an 'ugly and ignominious death'. 'If President Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran's Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, and stop hurting his millions of heartfelt supporters,' Araghchi posted on his account on social media platform X. 'The Great and Powerful Iranian People, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had NO CHOICE but to RUN to 'Daddy' to avoid being flattened by our Missiles, do not take kindly to Threats and Insults,' the foreign minister said. The US carried out strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites last weekend, with no consensus as to how effective they were. With those strikes, Washington joined Israel's bombardments of Iran's nuclear programme in the 12-day conflict launched on June 13. The foreign minister's condemnation on Saturday came after Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he had saved the Iranian leader from assassination, accusing Khamenei of ingratitude. 'I knew EXACTLY where he was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces, by far the Greatest and Most Powerful in the World, terminate his life,' Trump posted. 'I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!'' Trump also said that he had been working in recent days on the possible removal of sanctions against Iran, one of Tehran's main demands. 'But no, instead I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more,' Trump added, exhorting Iran to return to the negotiating table. Iran has denied it is set to resume nuclear talks with the US after Trump said that negotiations would begin again next week.

Iran holds funeral for slain scientists and commanders
TEHRAN: Iran held a state funeral Saturday for some 60 scientists and commanders killed in its war with the Zionist entity, after its top diplomat condemned the latest White House tirade against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. State television aired footage of thousands of black-clad mourners chanting 'Death to America' and 'Death to Israel' as they held aloft photographs of the dead. 'Boom, boom, Tel Aviv,' read one banner, referring to the retaliatory missile fire launched by Iran against Zionist entity during their 12-day war. State television showed mock-ups of ballistic missiles like those Iran fired at the Zionist entity alongside coffins draped in Iranian flags. President Masoud Pezeshkian attended the ceremony as did Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Khamenei who used a walking cane after being wounded in a Zionist strike in the war, the television images showed. But the supreme leader himself stayed away. Khamenei had delivered a video address on Thursday to proclaim 'victory' in the conflict which ended with a truce earlier this week. As the funeral procession wound its way across the sprawling metropolis, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi paid tribute to the war effort in a post on his Instagram account. 'Iranians gave blood, not land; gave their loved ones, not honor; they withstood a thousand-ton rain of bombs, but did not surrender,' the top diplomat said, adding that Iran does not recognize the word 'surrender'. Among the dead was armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri, who will be buried with his wife and journalist daughter who were killed alongside him. Nuclear scientist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, also killed in the attacks, will be laid to rest with his wife. Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami, killed on the first day of the war, will be buried on Sunday. Of the 60 people laid to rest after the ceremony, four were children and four were women. Zionist strikes killed at least 627 civilians, the Iranian health ministry said. Iran's retaliatory fire on Israel killed 28 people, according to Zionist figures. After the US strikes, Trump said new nuclear talks with Iran were set to begin next week. President Trump on Friday claimed he saved Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from an 'ugly' and 'ignominious' death after the U.S. bombed three Iranian nuclear sites last Saturday. 'Why would the so-called 'Supreme Leader,' Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the war torn Country of Iran, say so blatantly and foolishly that he won the War with Israel, when he knows his statement is a lie, it is not so,' Trump wrote in a lengthy post on Truth Social. 'His Country was decimated, his three evil Nuclear Sites were OBLITERATED, and I knew EXACTLY where he was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces, by far the Greatest and Most Powerful in the World, terminate his life,' he continued. 'I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!'' Trump said he 'demanded' Israel call back planes that were headed to Tehran, 'looking for a big day, perhaps the final knockout,' and that the move averted 'tremendous damage.' The president's comments come after Khamenei, in his first remarks since the U.S. strikes on Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities, declared victory in the conflict and argued the U.S. 'achieved nothing' through the strikes. 'My congratulations on our dear Iran's victory over the US regime,' Khamenei wrote early Thursday on social platform X. 'The US regime entered the war directly because it felt that if it didn't, the Zionist regime would be completely destroyed.' The ayatollah noted in a second post that Iran 'delivered a heavy slap to the US's face' with its counterattack on the U.S. air base in Qatar. Trump, who has touted the strikes as a massive success that 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear capabilities — despite skepticism from Democrats — blasted the Iranian leader's statement. 'During the last few days, I was working on the possible removal of sanctions, and other things, which would have given a much better chance to Iran at a full, fast, and complete recovery — The sanctions are BITING!' the president wrote Friday. 'But no, instead I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more.' He also warned things 'will only get worse' for Iran if they don't 'get back into the World Order flow' and urged Tehran leaders to 'realize that you often get more with HONEY than you do with VINEGAR. PEACE!!!' Trump helped negotiate a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Iran that took effect within days of the U.S. strikes, and despite ongoing tension between the two sides, the fragile truce has held through the week. During a press conference at the White House Friday, the president left the door open to bombing Iran again if the U.S. gathers intel that raises concerns about the country's uranium enrichment capabilities. TEHRAN — Iran will hold a state funeral service Saturday for around 60 people, including its military commanders, killed in its war with Israel, after Tehran's top diplomat condemned Donald Trump's comments on supreme leader Ali Khamenei as "unacceptable". The United States had carried out strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites last weekend, joining its ally Israel's bombardments of Iran's nuclear programme in the 12-day conflict launched on June 13. Both Israel and Iran claimed victory in the war that ended with a ceasefire, with Iranian leader Khamenei downplaying the US strikes as having done "nothing significant". In a tirade on his Truth Social platform, Trump blasted Tehran Friday for claiming to have won the war. He also claimed to have known "EXACTLY where he (Khamenei) was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the US Armed Forces... terminate his life". "I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!'" the US leader said. The Israeli strikes on Iran killed at least 627 civilians, Tehran's health ministry said. Iran's attacks on Israel killed 28 people, according to Israeli figures. 'Historic' state funeral The state funeral proceedings in Tehran for 60 nuclear scientists and military commanders killed in Israeli strikes are set to begin at 8am (0430 GMT) at Enghelab Square. It will be followed by a funeral procession to Azadi Square, about 11 kilometres (seven miles) across the sprawling metropolis. Mohsen Mahmoudi, head of Tehran's Islamic Development Coordination Council, vowed it would be a "historic day for Islamic Iran and the revolution". Among the dead is Mohammad Bagheri, a major general in Iran's Revolutionary Guards and the second-in-command of the armed forces after the Iranian leader. He will be buried alongside his wife and daughter, a journalist for a local media outlet, all killed in an Israeli attack. Nuclear scientist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, also killed in the attacks, will be buried with his wife. Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami, who was killed on the first day of the war, will also be laid to rest after Saturday's ceremony -- which will also honour at least 30 other top commanders. Of the 60 people who are to be laid to rest after the ceremony, four are children. 'Imminent threat' During his first term in office, Trump pulled out in 2018 of a landmark nuclear deal -- negotiated by former US president Barack Obama. The deal that Trump had abandoned aimed to make it practically impossible for Iran to build an atomic bomb, while at the same time allowing it to pursue a civil nuclear programme. Iran, which insists its nuclear programme is only for civilian purposes, stepped up its activities after Trump withdrew from the agreement. After the US strikes, Trump said negotiations for a new deal were set to begin next week. But Tehran denied a resumption, with leader Khamenei vowing Thursday never to yield to US pressure and insisting that Washington had been dealt a humiliating "slap". "The American president exaggerated events in unusual ways, and it turned out that he needed this exaggeration," Khamenei said, rejecting US claims Iran's nuclear programme had been set back by decades. Israel had claimed it had "thwarted Iran's nuclear project" during the 12-day war. But its foreign minister reiterated Friday the world was obliged to stop Tehran from developing an atomic bomb. "Israel acted at the last possible moment against an imminent threat against it, the region and the international community," Gideon Saar wrote on X.
