Tamil Nadu's SETC to procure Volvo multi-axle AC buses
CHENNAI: As anticipated, Volvo has emerged as the sole bidder for Tamil Nadu 's high-profile tender to procure 20 fully built, multi-axle AC buses for State Express Transport Corporation (SETC). The tender was floated last month, opting for fully built buses instead of assembling them in Karur. With stringent specifications — including BS-VI high-performance engines, full air suspension, anti-braking system, vehicle stability control and premium onboard features —Volvo was among the few players capable of meeting the requirements, industry insiders have indicated. Volvo's bid will now be evaluated by SETC, following which the purchase order will be issued, provided the quoted price aligns with the department's estimate. The company is expected to supply buses with either 51+1 or 55+1 seating layouts, offering wide gangways, theatre-style seating, individual USB ports, AC vents, and LED TVs at the front and rear. While this pilot tender covers just 20 buses, officials indicated that more such orders could follow based on public response and performance on the road.

Delhi to add 2,856 modern bus queue shelters inspired by global designs
New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The Delhi government will construct 2,856 modern bus queue shelters across the capital, drawing design models from global cities like London, Singapore and Moscow as well as Indian cities to offer commuters a smarter and more uniform travel experience. The government plans to replace outdated Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) shelters under this major revamp and expand the existing network with modern structures and innovative designs. These new shelters will feature digital display screens showing real-time bus arrival information, route maps, QR code-based feedback systems, solar panels for energy efficiency, CCTV cameras for enhanced security, USB charging ports and smart lighting to improve visibility and safety during night hours, an official told PTI. To achieve uniformity, 1,397 shelters have already undergone feasibility surveys and an additional 1,459 shelters are proposed for the next phase, bringing the total to 2,856, the official said. All 2,856 shelters will be taken under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with no expenditure from the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC), following a recent meeting chaired by the Delhi transport minister, he added. Among these, 250 are old-type DTC shelters, 1,580 are stainless steel modern shelters, and 191 are mild steel shelters installed through MP and MLA LAD funds. Householder should be aware of the issue before it's too late. Householders are being warned of a 'ticking time bomb' which may be growing in your garden. According to experts at PropertyMarket, if you have Japanese Knotweed near your home, you should act now. The pesky plant has a deceivingly harmless appearance, but if left undetected, it can have costly impacts on your property. During the summer months, the East Asian plant grows rapidly, usually by around 10cm per day, causing some serious damage along the way. It is easy to mistake this plant as a pleasant addition to your garden, but it is important to address its presence as a priority. As well as growing rapidly, it can reach heights of around three metres and burrows deep underground. Japanese Knotweed can force its way through expansion joints in concrete, cavity walls, weaknesses in the damaged mortar between paving slabs or bricks, and it can also hinder drains and sewers. If left unaddressed, it can also potentially cause substantial structural damage, especially to properties that are more vulnerable, such as character homes. The plant, described by the PropertyMarket experts as a "ticking time bomb", reportedly causes over £170million in damages to properties each year. It can be helpful to seek expert advice to help plan an effective treatment regime for Japanese Knotweed and to help minimise any potential return. If you haven't heard about Japanese Knotweed or don't know what it looks like, then it is very easy to miss it in your garden. "This plant has various growth stages throughout the year, which can make it hard to identify. In the spring, it will have red or purple asparagus-type shoots, quickly transforming into green or bamboo-like stems, but then in the early summer, it is usually fully grown at three metres high. The Japanese knotweed then remains dormant during the winter months before coming back to life in spring. The correct treatment will depend on a variety of factors. However, there are normally two methods to beat the issue: herbicide treatment or physical removal through excavation. A severe Japanese Knotweed infestation can make your home significantly harder to sell and can lower the value of your property.
