Caio Collet Leads Day 1 at Laguna Seca; Dennis Hauger Hits Barrier
INDYCAR A pair of first-day INDY NXT by Firestone practices at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna left series leader Dennis Hauger with a damaged car and Caio Collet with a fast car. SEE: Practice 1 | Practice 2 Driving the No. 76 HMD Motorsports entry, Collet posted the quickest overall lap, a time of 1 minute, 14.0546 of a second that bested Andretti Global's Lochie Hughes (1:14.3332 in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car) and HMD Motorsports' Josh Pierson (1:14.6193 in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports entry). Hauger had the best lap in the first session – 1:14.7484 – but his opportunity to improve in the second practice was lost when he hit the tire barrier in Turn 6. Hauger finished with the 16th-best lap overall in Andretti Global's No. 28 Nammo car, a position he won't want to be in when qualifying is held Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on FS1. That session will set the starting lineups for each of the two races held this weekend. The past 10 pole winners of the Grand Prix of Monterey have gone on to win the race. Hauger, who leads the series with five wins and six poles, holds a 76-point lead over Hughes (two wins, two poles) with five races remaining. Collet, a one-race winner this season, stands 94 points out of the series lead. Nineteen car-and-driver combinations participated after Andretti Cape INDY NXT and driver Ricardo Escotto parted ways. Thunderstorms Send Dennis Hauger to Pole at Iowa Speedway
INDYCAR INDY NXT by Firestone points leader Dennis Hauger will start from the No. 1 position for the INDY NXT by Firestone at Iowa Speedway race after the qualifying session was rained out. The field for the 75-lap race will take the green flag based on entrant points entering the event. SEE: Starting Lineup Hauger had the third-fastest lap in Friday's abbreviated practice, turning a lap of 165.073 mph in Andretti Global's No. 28 Nammo entry. His lap was part of the Andretti organization's strong start to the weekend. Four of the team-related drivers turned laps among the session's top five. Hauger will start from the top spot for the seventh time in nine races this season. He started second in the other two. Salvador de Alba posted the fastest lap of the 30-minute session at 165.518 mph in the No. 27 Grupo Indi car of Andretti Global. Myles Rowe was second driving the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy machine (165.421 mph). '(A) shortened practice, but happy to be where we are,' de Alba said. 'All the Andretti cars are pretty fast. We (turned) good laps at the very end with the used tires, so that gives us even more confidence.' Ricardo Escotto was fourth in the No. 3 Frank's Red Hot car of Andretti Cape Motorsports (164.623 mph). Rookie Lochie Hughes was fifth in Andretti Global's No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship entry (164.291 mph). Andretti Global's James Roe, who won the pole for last year's race at this .894-mile oval, had the eighth-fastest lap in the No. 29 Topcon entry (163.267 mph). Jordan Missig had the session's only spin, a lazy excursion off Turn 2. He did not make contact with the No. 48 Abel Motorsports car, enabling him to continue after pitting. The field was expected to include Sebastian Murray in the No. 2 DREAM RACING DUBAI entry of Andrett Cape Motorsport, but he was not medically cleared to participate in the wake of last weekend's accident with Escotto at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Caio Collet Breaks Through at Road America With First Win of Season
INDYCAR The wait finally is over for Caio Collet. Collet passed championship leader Dennis Hauger with less than five laps remaining and drove away to win the Grand Prix of Road America on Sunday, his first INDY NXT by Firestone victory this season. Collet's No. 76 HMD Motorsports car crossed the finish line 1.7093 seconds ahead of Hauger's No. 28 Nammo car fielded by Andretti Global. SEE: Race Results 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet entered this event with three podium finishes in the first six races this season, including two runner-up finishes. His victory was the first this season for HMD Motorsports, as Hauger and fellow Andretti Global rookie teammate Lochie Hughes have combined to win every race. 'At the beginning of the season, we couldn't match them, to be honest,' Collet said. 'It was really frustrating. Every time we went on track, it was hard to be second or third. But we kept working hard, and we need to keep working because they are a great team with great drivers. We need to keep pushing.' Hughes rounded out the podium finishers in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car after passing Josh Pierson in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine on the last of 20 laps around the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit. Pierson ended up tying his career-best finish of fourth. Myles Rowe placed fifth in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car in the caution-free race. Hauger led from the pole on an unseasonably hot day with air temperatures in the high 80s. Collet stayed close from the second starting position, keeping the gap around five- or six-tenths of a second as the duo marched away from the rest of the 19-car field. Collet's patience expired on Lap 16. He drove alongside Hauger on the long front straightway and made an outside pass in Turn 1 stick. Collet then eased away from Hauger over the last four laps. 'I kept up the pace, kept up the pressure,' Collet said. 'Yesterday, I think I lost the pole to myself. Dennis did a phenomenal lap, but I think I left a bit in the tank and was very frustrated. Today I really wanted to give the win to the team.' Said Hauger: 'I think we've been on the back foot compared to Collet all weekend. We did everything right today, but they were just a bit stronger. I tried to do what I could, but it just wasn't meant to be. Still a decent weekend.' Hauger's lead over second-place Hughes grew from 19 to 28 points with his fifth podium finish of the season. Collet is third, 70 points behind Hauger. The next race is the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio on Sunday, July 6 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It's good track for Collet, who earned his sole previous INDY NXT victory there in July 2024. recommended

Dennis Hauger Gets Early Jump for Road America Pole
INDYCAR Dennis Hauger wasted no time Saturday seizing the pole position for the Grand Prix of Road America, turning a quick lap early in the session that tempted the rest of the field but was never toppled. INDY NXT by Firestone championship leader Hauger earned the fifth pole of his rookie season with a best lap of 1 minute, 52.3301 seconds in the No. 28 Nammo car of Andretti Global. SEE: Qualifying Results Hauger, who has won four of the six races this season, turned his quickest lap with more than eight minutes remaining in the first of two qualifying groups. No driver in his group came within a half-second, and none of the 10 drivers in the second qualifying group could touch his time. Not bad for a driver who never has turned a lap at the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit before this weekend. 'I think we maximized the first run,' Hauger said. 'We knew it (best lap) was going to be on the first run. The second run was more of a small test session for tomorrow. We've been running a bit out of the window balance-wise. Got a bit surprised in practice one, but we've built up from there. Super happy that we managed to get pole.' The qualifying format for the INDYCAR development series features two groups, with the first group determining the odd-numbered starting spots on the starting grid and the second group filling the even-numbered spots. Caio Collet, who led both practice sessions leading into qualifying, was second at 1:52.5479 in the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car. 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet led the second qualifying group, which was slowed by a red flag with around five minutes to go when Salvador de Alba made contact with the tire barrier in Turn 12 in the No. 27 Grupo Indi car of Andretti Global. Veteran Josh Pierson will start third, tying his career best set last year at this track, after his lap of 1:53.0195 in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine. Rookie Lochie Hughes will join Pierson in the second row of the starting grid after his lap of 1:52.9548 in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship entry of Andretti Global. Jack William Miller produced a top lap of 1:53.1576 in the No. 40 Abel/Miller/Vinatieri Motorsports car to earn a career-best starting spot of fifth. Teammate Myles Rowe will join Miller in Row 3 after his quickest lap of 1:53.2014 in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car. Caio Collet Fends Off Dennis Hauger in Second Road America Practice
INDYCAR Caio Collet kept the upper hand on championship leader Dennis Hauger during the second practice for the Grand Prix of Road America on Saturday, eyeing his first pole and victory of the INDY NXT by Firestone season. 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet was quickest at 1 minute, 52.3358 seconds in the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car, nearly one second quicker than his session-leading time of 1:53.1345 from Friday. Collet is third in the standings, 78 points behind Hauger, with a best start and finish this season of second in the INDYCAR development series. SEE: Practice Results Hauger was second once again, this time at 1:52.3998 in the No. 28 Nammo car of Andretti Global. Myles Rowe jumped from sixth Friday to third in the 45-minute session today at 1:52.8789 in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy machine. Callum Hedge also charged up the leader board today on the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit, climbing from seventh to fourth at 1:53.0088 in the No. 17 Abel Motorsports car. Salvador de Alba rounded out the top five at 1:53.3482 in the No. 27 Grupo Indi entry of Andretti Global. Lochie Hughes, second in the standings and just 19 points behind Hauger, ended up seventh at 1:53.3950 in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car of Andretti Global. Hughes was third Friday. Up next is qualifying at 1:30 p.m. ET today. The 20-lap race starts at 11 a.m. ET Sunday.
