Dunkerque appoint former Barcelona B head coach Albert Sánchez as new manager

USL Dunkerque have announced that they have appointed Albert Sánchez as their new head coach. The former Barcelona B manager will sign a contract that will keep him in the north of France for the next two seasons. Dunkerque have been in the market for a new head coach after Gonçalo Feio's reign came to an explosive end on the 13th of July, only a few weeks after he was appointed as Luís Castro's replacement. His short reign was notably stormy, culminating in an outburst towards the club's management during a preseason friendly against local rivals US Boulogne CO. Les Maritimes had been linked with a move for retired Manchester City and Arsenal defender Gaël Clichy, who, earlier this month, left his role as assistant coach with the France U21s. However, they have opted for Sánchez, who they hope will continue their progress, having reached the Ligue 2 playoffs and the Coupe de France semi-finals. GFFN | Nick Hartland

Gonçalo Feio leaves Dunkerque by mutual consent less than a month into role

USL Dunkerque's search for a new head coach begins again following yesterday's announcement that the club and Gonçalo Feio have agreed to mutually terminate their agreement less than a month into his tenure. The announcement was accompanied by a short statement signed by club presidents, Selçuk Demir and the former Newcastle United and Chelsea FC striker Demba Ba. It read, 'The club would like to thank Feio and his assistant for their commitment and the work accomplished throughout their time in Dunkerque. The entire club wishes them every success in their continuing professional careers.' Advertisement The Portuguese manager had only been appointed as the replacement for Luís Castro on the 20th of June, with his fellow countryman taking up the hot seat at FC Nantes. Feio had been a free agent before temporarily taking the reins at Les Maritimes, after he was unable to agree on a contract extension with Legia Warsaw. Feio oversaw only one full season with the Polish club, but the brief stint was successful. He even led them to a pyrrhic victory over Chelsea FC in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League clash. GFFN | Nick Hartland

Dunkerque considering appointing Gaël Clichy as next head coach

For USL Dunkerque, replacing Luís Castro was always going to be a hard task. The Portuguese manager had helped one of Ligue 2's lowest budgets punch above their means last season, in a campaign that saw Les Maritimes reach the Coupe de France semi-finals and the promotion playoffs. The club believed they had the answer to Castro's departure to FC Nantes in the shape of fellow countryman Gonçalo Feio. However, the former Legia Warsaw manager lasted only 23 days before he and the club mutually agreed to end their partnership. The club, run by co-president Demba Ba, will have to act quickly with the season beginning again next month. Advertisement Back at square one, Dunkerque's search has begun again. According to a report from La Voix du Nord, the club could look to offer the role to Gaël Clichy. Yesterday, the retired Arsenal and Manchester City defender left his post as an assistant coach with the France U21s and so is now a free agent. GFFN | Nick Hartland

Dunkerque near to securing successor to Luís Castro

USL Dunkerque have found their successor to Luís Castro, after the Portuguese head coach was headhunted by FC Nantes. According to a report from L'Équipe, Dunkerque are moving quickly to try and secure the services of Gonçalo Feio. Feio, who is a free agent after he failed to agree on a contract extension with Legia Warsaw, had an impressive season in Poland. He helped lead the club to a quarter-final berth in the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Chelsea (but managed to win at Stamford Bridge). Advertisement L'Équipe writes that Feio is expected to arrive in the North of France soon, where he will sign a contract with the Ligue 2 side. Despite having one of the smaller budgets in the league, Dunkerque narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight this season. The Ligue 2 side finished the campaign in 4th, and were eventually beaten in the playoffs by FC Metz. Les Maritimes will be hoping that they can plot a way into Ligue 1 for the first time in their history. GFFN | Nick Hartland

Dunkerque's Luís Castro wants to join Lens after rejecting Shakhtar Donetsk

USL Dunkerque's Luís Castro turned down the opportunity to become Shakhtar Donetsk's new manager, however, the Portuguese technician is interested in another job in France, according to a report from Foot Mercato. Castro exceeded all expectations this season, taking Dunkerque into the promotion play-offs in Ligue 2. His side came unstuck against FC Metz in the dying moments and, as a result, will compete in the second tier once again next season. However, will that be with or without Castro? Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk had hoped to recruit the Dunkerque manager as a successor to Marino Pusic, however, Castro refused. Arda Turan has now been confirmed in the post. But that does not mean that the Portuguese manager won't leave Dunkerque during the off season. RC Lens remain without a manager. Will Still left the club to join Southampton earlier this month after just one season. Castro is open to joining Les Sang et Or. Castro's representatives have held talks with the club's new sporting director, Jean-Louis Leca, however, there are other candidates in the running, notably former Olympique Lyonnais manager Pierre Sage.
