Trump picks outspoken ‘alpha male', Hooters aficionado Nick Adams as next US ambassador to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 — President Donald Trump has nominated Nick Adams, an Australian-American commentator and self-described 'alpha male,' to serve as the next US ambassador to Malaysia. Adams, who became an American citizen in 2021, rose to prominence in 2016 when Trump praised his book 'Green Card Warrior' as a 'must read' on social media, Politico reported. The nomination was formally sent to the Senate on Wednesday for confirmation proceedings. Adams has authored six books, including works that criticise Joe Biden and praise Trump and Winston Churchill as defenders of Western civilisation. He is also an outspoken fan of Hooters, the US restaurant chain that has long drawn criticism for building its brand around the sexualisation of its female waitstaff, having tweeted about it over 500 times in a span of four years. Trump wrote the foreword for Adams' 2024 book 'Alpha Kings,' which advises young men on becoming 'true alpha males.' The nominee previously served in Australian local government but was condemned by colleagues and threatened with suspension from the Liberal Party for conduct deemed damaging to the party's reputation. Adams currently serves on the board of the congressionally chartered Woodrow Wilson Center, a position he received through a 2020 Trump nomination. Trump praised Adams as 'an incredible Patriot and very successful entrepreneur' whose devotion to America serves as an inspiration. Adams expressed his honor at the opportunity to 'take the president's goodwill and spread it to the great people of Malaysia.' If confirmed, Adams would replace Edgard Kagan, a career diplomat who was nominated by Biden in May 2023.

Malaysia seeks urgent trade talks with US after 25% tariff blow

Malaysia will press ahead with talks towards a 'comprehensive' trade agreement with the United States , its trade ministry has said, as Kuala Lumpur races to soften the blow of a newly imposed 25 per cent tariff on its exports unveiled by US President Donald Trump On Monday, Trump revealed he had sent letters to leaders of 14 countries announcing tariffs ranging from 25 to 40 per cent, in an apparent gambit to accelerate trade negotiations. The new 25 per cent tariff on Malaysian goods is one percentage point higher than the rate first outlined by the mercurial US leader when he first revealed his 'Liberation Day' levies on April 2. In a statement on Tuesday, Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said the country was committed to 'continued engagement with the US towards a balanced, mutually beneficial and comprehensive trade agreement'. Shipping containers are seen stacked at Port Klang, Malaysia's biggest and busiest port. US hits Malaysia with 25% tariff

US president Donald Trump warned that any decision to raise Malaysian tariffs on US goods would result in an additional 25% tariff. (AP pic) PETALING JAYA : The US has imposed a 25% tariff on Malaysia starting Aug 1, a rate which US president Donald Trump described as 'far less' than what is needed to eliminate the country's trade deficit with Malaysia. The rate is also higher than the 24% initially imposed on certain Malaysian exports to the US, later placed on a 90-day pause that ended today. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, posted on Trump's Truth Social platform, Trump said Malaysia's current trade policies had made its trading relationship with the US largely one-sided and non-reciprocal. He also said that he was ready to lower the 25% tariff if Malaysia changed its trade policies. Trump said the tariff would be applied independently of any other sector-specific tariffs already in place, and that any attempt to reroute goods through other countries to avoid higher tariffs would be penalised by the application of the higher rates. He also warned that any decision by Malaysia to raise tariffs on US goods would result in an additional 25% tariff in response. 'Please understand that these tariffs are necessary to correct the many years of Malaysia's tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers, which have caused these unsustainable trade deficits against the US,' he said. In his letter, Trump also emphasised the continued commitment of the US to its trading relationship with Malaysia, despite its significant trade deficit with the country. Trump also encouraged greater Malaysian participation in the American economy, which he described as the 'number one market' in the world. 'As you are aware, there will be no tariff if Malaysia, or companies within your country, decide to build or manufacture products within the US,' he said. 'In fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely – in other words, in a matter of weeks,' he said. Trump issued similar letters to several other countries, including Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, and South Africa.
