Senate Republicans seek to end EV tax credit by September 30
US Senate Republicans late Friday released a revised tax and budget bill that would end the $7,500 tax credit on new electric vehicle sales and leases on September 30 as well as the $4,000 tax credit for used EVs. The prior version would have ended the credit for new sales 180 days after the bill was signed into law, 90 days for used vehicles and immediately ended the credit for leased vehicles not assembled in North America and meeting other requirements. Republicans have taken aim at EVs on a number of fronts, a reversal from former President Joe Biden's policy that encouraged electric vehicles and renewable energy to fight climate change and reduce emissions. The House of Representatives version would allow the $7,500 new-EV tax credit to continue through the end of 2025, and through the end of 2026 for automakers that have not yet sold 200,000 EVs before killing it. The Senate bill also includes a provision to eliminate fines for failing to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy rules in a move aimed at making it easier for automakers to build gas-powered vehicles. The Republican bill exempts interest paid on auto loans from taxes for new cars made in the US through 2028, but phases it out for individual taxpayers making more than $100,000 annually. Senate Republicans dropped a bid to force the US Postal Service to scrap thousands of electric vehicles and charging equipment in the bill following a ruling from the Senate parliamentarian. The US Postal Service has 7,200 electric vehicles, made up of Ford e-Transit and specially built Next Generation Delivery Vehicles built by Oshkosh Defense and warned scrapping its EVs would cost it $1.5 billion. President Donald Trump this month signed a resolution approved by Congress to bar California's landmark plan to end the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035, which has been adopted by 11 other states representing a third of the US auto market.

Calumet City man sentenced to nearly 6 years for 2023 armed robbery of mail carrier in Harvey, Illinois
A United States District Court judge in Chicago sentenced a man to nearly six years in federal prison for assaulting and robbing a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in Harvey, Illinois, in 2023. Malik Washington, 26, of Calument City, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal robbery charge. According to the United States Attorney's Office Northern District of Illinois, Washington approached the carrier on Oct. 23, 2023, and asked them for rubber bands. He then attempted to grab a box from the carrier's bag, but the carrier pulled away. The office said Washington pulled out a semi-automatic handgun from his sweatshirt and pointed it at the carrier's stomach and demanded their postal key, to which they complied. He then ran from the area. Authorities arrested Washington four days later and recovered the stolen key. Washington was sentenced on Tuesday to years and 10 months in federal prison.

Trump says number of 'non-working holidays' in America 'must change' in Juneteenth social media post
In a social media post on Juneteenth, President Donald Trump said America has "too many" holidays where people don't work. "Too many non-working holidays in America," Trump wrote on Truth Social late Thursday. "It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed." The president said that the frequency of holidays "must change" and that workers didn't want them, either. "The workers don't want it either!" he continued. "Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Juneteenth, held on June 19 every year, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has long been celebrated by Black Americans. It became the 11th federal holiday in 2021 with a law signed by then-President Joe Biden. The bill passed with broad bipartisan support, receiving unanimous approval in the Senate and all but 14 votes in the House of Representatives. Most federal offices, such as the US Postal Service, are closed during Juneteenth. Markets like the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange don't trade during the holiday, either. But whether private companies and state governments remain open varies. Most major banks are closed for the holiday, but not all companies provide paid time off. The White House press office didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment regarding Trump's Truth Social post. Earlier on Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a press briefing that the White House was open. When asked by a journalist about commemorating Juneteenth, she said she was "not tracking" Trump's signature on any proclamations for the holiday. "I know this is a federal holiday," she said. "I want to thank all of you for showing up to work. We are certainly here. We're working 24/7 right now." Trump himself supported making Juneteenth a federal holiday in the wake of widespread protests following the killing of George Floyd. "Make Juneteenth a National Holiday" was included among his "Promise to Black America over 4 years" policy proposals in his 2020 presidential campaign. During that campaign, Trump took credit for publicizing Juneteenth after moving one of his rallies from June 19 to June 20 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. "I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous," Trump told The Wall Street Journal at the time. "It's actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it." In the same interview, Trump expressed surprise that his administration had commemorated Juneteenth every year. "Oh really? We put out a statement? The Trump White House put out a statement?" he said, according to the Journal. "OK, OK. Good." The White House did not publish a statement on its website commemorating Juneteenth this year.

What's open and closed on Juneteenth 2025? Banks, stock markets, stores, post office, pharmacies, more
Any student of American history knows that there are hard truths to ponder about our past. Slavery certainly falls into this category. Today (Thursday, June 19, 2025), the United States commemorates the end of that horrific institution and wrestles with its lasting impact. As this occasion has only been formally established as a federal holiday since 2021, it may be confusing to know what will be open and closed. Let's take a deeper look so you can plan ahead. A brief history of Juneteenth Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday is always held on June 19 because this is the anniversary of the day that federal troops reached Galveston, Texas, in 1865. Under the leadership of General Gordon Granger, troops took control of the state and made sure that enslaved people were freed in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, which was enacted two and a half years prior. Although celebrations of the holiday date back to 1866, the landmark day did not become a federal holiday until 2021 under President Biden. Are banks open on Juneteenth? Are FedEx and UPS operating on Juneteenth? Yes. According to its website, UPS is open for business as usual on Juneteenth. This includes store locations and deliveries. The same can be said for FedEx locations and deliveries. Is the stock market open on Juneteenth? No. It's not possible to buy or sell stocks on Juneteenth. Speaking in general terms, most retail locations will be open on Juneteenth. Target, Costco, and Aldi will all remain open. Olive Garden will serve its famous breadsticks. Major pharmacy chains such as CVS and Walgreens will be open, although they might be operating under limited hours—so check your local pharmacy hours to be sure. Smaller mom-and-pop shops, meanwhile, might close for the day, so it is a good practice to double check those. The final deadline for Fast Company's Next Big Things in Tech Awards is Friday, June 20, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Apply today.

'America's worst road' has pot holes that are a FOOT deep, with mail carriers now refusing to drive down it
Residents on a Louisiana road are being plagued by 'dangerous' potholes so deep postal workers are refusing to deliver their mail. Locals in St. Landry Parish say they are having to swerve to avoid the massive potholes, which measure up to three feet wide and one foot deep. Matthew and Jessica Roberts, who live on Copper Road, have been complaining about the bumpy stretch of roadway 'since before COVID.' 'This is dangerous,' Jessica told KATC. 'Frustrated is the biggest word for us because we have tried all avenues when it comes to getting it fixed.' The couple are afraid for the safety of their two teenage children, who are new drivers and they have had to spend money repairing their vehicles because of the road's sorry state. 'When you drive on it, you have to weave back and forth,' Matthew added. The family said that Copper Road is in such poor condition that postal workers have stopped delivering mail to their home. 'The road is so bad, we were told that it's damaging the mail trucks, so our mail doesn't get delivered,' Matthew said. Jessie Bellard, the president of St. Landry Parish, told KATC he wasn't aware that residents living on Copper Road weren't getting their mail. Bellard, who has been parish president since August 2020, explained that in situations like this, the post office usually notifies his office. He claimed he did not receive a call. The US Postal Service confirmed that its drivers had been instructed not to drive down Copper Road to not risk their safety. However, service was resumed on Tuesday after temporary fixes were made to the road. The couple said that crews poured fresh asphalt into potholes that day, but argued that wasn't enough. Matthew pointed out one of the temporary patches and demonstrated how inadequate it was by putting his foot into it. The asphalt gave way immediately. 'If I step on it, it moves. A car just pushes that right out. That's what they fixed this morning,' he said. Even before this quick fix from the parish, Matthew said local officials have repeatedly claimed they'd get the road back to working order, only to do nothing. 'Honestly, the worst thing for us is that they say they fix it or they say they're gonna come out and fix it, they don't, and they put on a work order online that they've surveyed it and fixed it. They haven't done anything,' he said. In an interview, Bellard acknowledged that Copper Road, 'has been like this for a while.'. Bellard said this project will take two days to complete and cost roughly $89,000 'We patched it, and of course, it don't hold. It's an old road,' he said. Bellard said he is aware of the complaints from residents and plans to take permanent action - as soon as the rain stops. 'Last month in this area, we had 6.8 inches of rain,' he said, claiming the delay to fixing Copper Road was due to weather. 'And I am not going to do any overlay in the rain, nor with the threat of more rain,' he said. He said this project will take two days to complete and cost roughly $89,000. Matthew and Jessica are so sick of waiting that they now plan to move away, pointing out that they pay their taxes to the parish and their road hasn't been fixed for years. 'We have been just getting the full runaround, and we are appreciative but it's the length of time we had to wait for this,' Jessica said. The Daily Mail has contacted the Public Works Department of St Landry Parish for comment.
