Robotaxi service by Waymo, Uber expands to U.S. Atlanta

SAN FRANCISCO, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Waymo and Uber said on Tuesday that their commercial robotaxi service will expand to Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia. The service will initially cover about 65 square miles in Atlanta. Waymo's fleet in Atlanta is in the "dozens" and will eventually be expanded over time, the company said. Uber said it has an annual run rate of 1.5 million mobility and delivery trips by autonomous vehicles in partnerships with 18 autonomous vehicle companies on its network. Waymo said it provides 250,000 paid robotaxi rides every week across Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. Robotaxi rides will cost the same as an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric driven by a human, the companies said. The "Waymo on Uber" service splits the responsibilities of owning and operating a fleet of driverless vehicles. Uber handles the charging, maintenance, and cleaning of the autonomous vehicles, and manages access to the robotaxis via its app. Meanwhile, Waymo monitors the tech and the autonomous operations, including roadside assistance and certain aspects of rider support, according to a report by TechCrunch. Last September, Uber and Waymo announced plans to offer robotaxi service in Austin and Atlanta in early 2025 as part of an expanded partnership. In March, the companies started offering the "Waymo on Uber" robotaxi service in Austin. Waymo has more than 100 robotaxis in its commercial fleet in Austin, according to the company.

Uber, Waymo launch autonomous ride-hailing service in Atlanta

By David Shepardson (Reuters) -Uber Technologies on Tuesday is beginning autonomous ride-hailing in Atlanta with Alphabet unit Waymo after offering the service in Austin, Texas, since March. The companies, which first announced the plan for the Atlanta service in September 2024, will offer Waymo autonomous vehicles on the Uber app for travel across 65 square miles (168 square km) of Atlanta. The race to deploy robotaxis is picking up pace as Waymo expands testing and Tesla began limited trials of its autonomous taxi service in Austin on Sunday, a sign of growing momentum in self-driving vehicles. There are now 100 Waymo vehicles on the Uber platform in Austin and it will launch with dozens in Atlanta. Uber will manage and dispatch a fleet of fully autonomous, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles that "will grow to hundreds" over time, the company said last year. Riders will pay the same rates as UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric when driven in a Waymo self-driving vehicle but they will not be prompted to tip. Waymo is operating fully autonomously on highways in California and Arizona for employees but not yet for the public. The Atlanta service is limited to surface streets. Last week, Waymo said its vehicles will be back in New York City next month for autonomous testing. Waymo has applied for a permit from the New York City Department of Transportation to operate autonomously, with a trained specialist behind the wheel in Manhattan. Waymo in March said it aims to launch fully autonomous ride-hailing in the U.S. capital city of Washington next year. Waymo has more than 1,500 vehicles running over 250,000 rides a week across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin. Uber sold its own self-driving division in 2020 to reduce cash burn and refocus on its core business, including ride hailing and food delivery after the 2018 death of a pedestrian who was struck by a self-driving Uber. The backup safety driver behind the wheel of the Uber in the fatal crash pleaded guilty in 2023 and was sentenced to probation, prosecutors said.

You can now ride in driverless Ubers in this U.S. city

Austin just took a big leap into the future of transportation. Uber has partnered with Waymo to bring fully autonomous rides to the Texas capital, giving riders the chance to experience a driverless trip in an all-electric Jaguar I-PACE. Uber users in Austin requesting an UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric ride can now opt in for a potential match with a Waymo self-driving vehicle at no extra cost. Waymo currently operates in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Miami, with plans to expand to Atlanta later this year. 'At Uber, we're reimagining how the world moves and building a future where autonomous vehicles and drivers work side by side to help make transportation more affordable, sustainable, and accessible for all,' Uber said in a recent statement. To increase your chances of being matched with a driverless vehicle, make sure you have the latest version of the Uber app and enable the autonomous vehicle (AV) preference in your account settings. Once matched, riders can unlock their Jaguar I-PACE through the Uber app, open the trunk, and begin the journey. The vehicle can be identified by its license plate and make/model. Similar to regular Uber rides, Waymo vehicles will wait several minutes for passengers to board. Each vehicle can accommodate up to four passengers, with seating available in any spot except the driver's seat. Currently, riders in Austin can travel within the city's 37-square-mile area. The program will expand its coverage area in the future. For any issues during the ride, Uber's 24/7 customer service is available both inside the vehicle and via the app. The post You can now ride in driverless Ubers in this U.S. city appeared first on The Manual.
