Building rapport with Tanjong community over feast of durians
Hui Ying (third right) sharing a light moment with attendees at the durian event at Lee Sih Chong Soo Hall in Burma Road. — KT GOH/The Star THE aroma of durian filled the air during a festival at Lee Sih Chong Soo Hall along Burma Road in George Town to celebrate the spirit of community. The event, organised by Tanjong MP and Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, saw about 500kg of the King of Fruits served to some 300 guests. These comprised community group members and media personnel who had contributed time and effort to help the public. Hui Ying thanked the many hands behind community- building in her constituency. 'We gather not only to enjoy the King of Fruits, but more importantly, to appreciate our comrades who have always served with dedication for the well-being of our community. 'I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all, including members of the Village Community Management Councils, Women and Family Development Committee, Youth Committee, and Parliament and service centre members, as well as officials from various departments, and agencies, including the media,' she said in her speech. Attendees were treated to a feast of premium durian varieties such as Udang Merah, Hor Lor, Kulit Hijau, and Naga Emas. Other local favourite fruits like rambutans and mangosteens were also served. Hui Ying also highlighted the Madani government reforms and achievements in national finance. 'Since taking office, the Madani government has implemented a range of bold reforms including subsidy rationalisation, expansion of SST and restructuring of national expenditure. 'These reforms have begun to bear fruit, with the fiscal deficit reduced by 17%, increased tax revenues, and Malaysia climbing to 23rd place in the World Competitiveness Ranking 2025. 'Among the reforms with the most direct impact on the people is the increase in allocation for cash assistance. 'This year, the government raised the allocation for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) to RM13bil, up from RM10bil last year, making it the largest cash assistance in the country's history. 'Through Sara, recipients can spend the aid directly using their MyKad at over 3,700 registered shops nationwide, including more than 190 in Penang. 'The amount of assistance also increased to RM1,200 per year, and up to RM2,100 for certain households,' she said. Also present were DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, several state assemblymen and community leaders.

Lower durian prices expected as supply floods market next month, says seller
KUALA LUMPUR: The arrival of durian season has once again excited fans of the "king of fruits", with supplies flooding the market since early June, especially from major producing states like Johor and Pahang. Checks around Sentul showed several stalls beginning to draw crowds as early as noon, especially city dwellers making the most of the weekend to indulge in their favourite fruit. Durian seller Muhd Khairul, 34, who has been in the business for over eight years, described this year's harvest as the beginning of a "major season" expected to peak between July and August. "Customers have already started coming, especially looking for Udang Merah and IOI durians. "Prices have dropped slightly. There was a time when Musang King reached up to RM190 per kg. "But there are also more affordable options depending on the grade and size," he said when met at his stall. He added that prices at the start of the season tend to be higher but usually fall as the supply increases during the peak period. "I don't own an orchard, so I source all my durians from regular suppliers in Johor and Pahang. "If the wholesale price drops, we'll run promotions. "I follow market prices and will lower them for customers whenever I can," he said. Aiman Junaidi, 20, who works at a durian stall, said the varieties available include Musang King, IOI, D24, Kampung, and Udang Merah with Musang King being the top seller since the stall opened earlier this month. "Musang King is definitely the most in demand, followed by D24, which has been selling well all week. "Prices are still a little high now but are expected to drop during the peak season in July. "Still, we're running various promotions, including kampung durians priced from as low as RM60 per plastic bag," he said. Shahidatul Nadia, 36, said she never misses durian season and described this year as one of the most vibrant in recent memory. "I'm a big fan of durians, especially Udang Merah because it's richer and has a bold flavour. "This year, there's more variety and prices are more reasonable, so I'm really satisfied," she said. She added that she prefers eating durians fresh at stalls with her family, as it offers a livelier experience that is unique to the durian season.

QuickCheck: Are fake 'Balik Pulau' durians being sold by unscrupulous traders?
ONE thing most Malaysians can agree on is a shared appreciation for the thorny delight of durian, though many would have their own preferred varieties. Some of the more popular varieties include Musang King, Udang Merah, Black Thorn and Penang's famed Balik Pulau. However, reports have emerged that unscrupulous traders are passing off imported durians as the Balik Pulau variety. Is this true? VERDICT: TRUE Authorities in Penang told Bernama that they have identified several hotspots selling imported durians, particularly from Thailand, falsely marketed as the famed Balik Pulau variety. State agriculture, food security and cooperative development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said joint operations involving the police, the Agriculture Department and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) will be launched soon to curb such fraudulent practices. "We have identified two or three hotspots where durians are brought in by truck from Thailand but sold as local produce. "We're just waiting for the right time to conduct raids and issue compounds," he said after officiating the State Interim Report Launch at the Bumbong Lima Agricultural Training Institute on Tuesday (June 17). Also present was the Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM) chief statistician and Agriculture Census 2024 commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. Fahmi said the enforcement followed public complaints and ongoing monitoring by authorities, including a recent roadblock at the Juru toll plaza involving the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) and other agencies to detect non-compliant agricultural products, especially durian. While durians from other regions are not banned, Fahmi stressed that sellers must not misrepresent them as Balik Pulau durians. "We now have a 'Track and Trace' system in place since June 1. Every durian is tagged with a QR code that lets consumers verify its origin, from farm to table," he said. He encouraged the public to report suspicious sellers and noted that most legitimate durian farmers in Penang have adopted the tracking system to boost transparency and consumer confidence.
