Al-Arabi signs Belgian striker Ngoyi as Christopher faces possible exit

KUWAIT CITY, July 29: Al-Arabi Club officially announced the signing of their fifth foreign player, Belgian striker of Congolese descent Julian Ngoyi, who joins from Belgian side Mechelen to strengthen the team's attacking options for the upcoming season. At 27 years old, Ngoyi is versatile, capable of playing both as a central striker and on the wings. His career includes stints in England, Switzerland, Turkey, and Belgium, having represented clubs such as Stoke City, Swindon Town, Grasshopper Club Zürich, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Kasimpasa. Ngoyi has also featured for Belgium's youth national teams, including five appearances for the U21 side. Al-Arabi aims to leverage Ngoyi's international experience and physical prowess to boost its offensive firepower in the new campaign. Ngoyi becomes the fifth foreign professional in Al-Arabi's squad, joining French-Guinean Hassimi Fadiga, Ugandan Kenneth Ssemakula, and Nigerians Ayano Ewuala and Christopher John. Meanwhile, with the departures of Hassan Hamdan and Algerian Sofiane Bouchare, Portuguese coach Marco Alves is keen on signing a new defender. Jordanian international Abdullah Nassib is reportedly on Al-Arabi's shortlist for the position, though he has also attracted offers from Iraqi clubs Al-Zawraa and Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya. Should Al-Arabi finalize a deal with Nassib or another defender, Nigerian Christopher John is expected to leave the club ahead of the new season. Al-Arabi is currently training twice daily at its camp in Abu Dhabi, which began last week. The team will hold a final training session this evening ahead of their season opener tomorrow against UAE side Hatta Club. The squad is preparing for an August 12 playoff match against Maldivian club Maziya S&RC, part of the Asian Challenge League, to be held in the Maldives. Before departing for the Maldives on August 8, Al-Arabi will play a friendly against the UAE's Baniyas Club on August 6. Coach Alves is emphasizing training in humid conditions to help players acclimate to the high humidity typical of the Maldives throughout much of the year.

At least 21 killed in attack on east Congo church by Islamic State-backed rebels, civil leader says

Kinshasa, Congo AP — At least 21 people were killed on Sunday in an attack on church premises in At least 21 people were killed on Sunday in an attack on church premises in eastern Congo by Islamic State-backed rebels, according to a civil society leader. The attack was carried out by members of the Allied Democratic Force (ADF) around one am inside the premises of a Catholic church in eastern Congo's Komanda. Several houses and shops were also burnt. 'More than 21 people were shot dead inside and outside and we have recorded at least three charred bodies and several houses burned. But the search is continuing,' Dieudonne Duranthabo, a civil society coordinator in Komanda, told The Associated Press. Earlier this month, the group killed dozens of people in Ituri in what a United Nations spokesperson described as a bloodbath. A spokesperson for the Congolese army in Ituri province, where Komanda is located, confirmed 10 dead. 'What we know this morning is that there was an incursion by armed men with machetes into a church not far from Komanda, where about 10 people were killed and massacred and some shops were set on fire,' Lt. Jules Ngongo, the DRC Army's spokesperson in Ituri, said. The ADF, with ties with the Islamic State, is a rebel group that operates in the borderland between Uganda and Congo, has routinely conducted attacks against civilian populations. 'We are truly disappointed because it is incredible that such a situation could occur in a town where all the security officials are present,' Duranthabo said. 'Some citizens have started fleeing the area and are heading towards Bunia. 'We demand military intervention as soon as possible, since we are told the enemy is still near our town.' The ADF was formed by disparate small groups in Uganda in the late 1990s following alleged discontent with Yoweri Museveni. In 2002, following military assaults by Ugandan forces, the group moved its activities to neighboring DRC and has since been responsible for the killings of thousands of civilians. In 2019, it pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. The ADF's leadership conceives of an Islamist government in the East African country. The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) has long struggled against the rebel group, and it has now been grappling with a complex web of attacks since the renewed hostilities between the Rwanda-backed M23.

Pope: May blood of ‘martyrs' in DRC church attack become seed of peace

Pope Leo XIV expresses sorrow and spiritual closeness following the deadly attack on the Parish of Blessed Anuarite in Komanda, in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jul 29, 2025 File photo of the aftermath of violence in the DRC (AFP or licensors) 'May the blood of these martyrs become a seed of peace, reconciliation, fraternity, and love for the Congolese people,' the Pope writes in his message following a brutal attack on a Catholic Church in Komanda town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nearly 40 people were killed Sunday in eastern Congo's Ituri province when rebels stormed a Catholic church during a vigil and opened fire on worshippers. At least 38 people, including women and children, were confirmed dead in the church, while another five were killed in a nearby village. In a telegram addressed to Archbishop Mugalu, President of the Congolese Bishops' Conference on the Pope's behalf, Cardinal Pietro Parolin says, 'His Holiness Pope Leo XIV learned with dismay and deep sorrow of the attack perpetrated against the Parish of Blessed Anuarite in Komanda, which caused the death of several faithful gathered for worship.' This tragedy, he continues, 'calls us even more urgently to work for the integral human development of the martyred population of that region.' Concluding the telegram, Pope Leo XIV imparts his Apostolic Blessing upon the Parish of Blessed Anuarite, the mourning families, the faithful of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the entire nation. Extremist militias According to Congolese authorities, the attacks in Komanda town in the conflict-battered region were carried out by the Allied Democratic Force, a rebel group backed by the Islamic State that has mostly targeted villagers in eastern Congo and across the border in Uganda. The ADF has roots in Uganda in the 1990s. Following the overthrow of long-term dictator Idi Amin, a coalition of various discontent groups saw the new government of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as anti-Muslim. Since then, the group has grown into a potent force but has been pushed out of Uganda's territories and now operates in the borderlands between Uganda and Congo, often targeting civilians in remote villages.--Vatican News

DR Congo church massacre survivors describe ADF terror attack

BUNIA: Survivors of a brutal massacre at a Catholic church in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo have described a night of terror as Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants stormed the building, killing dozens. The attack, which occurred overnight Saturday to Sunday in Komanda, Ituri province, left 43 dead, including nine children. Pierre Abendi, 21, was among those inside the Blessed Anuarite Catholic parish church when the assault began. 'I stood against a wall and hid behind a mattress. I waited quietly for my turn to die,' he told AFP, his voice trembling. Witnesses said the attackers spoke a foreign language, confirming their identity as ADF fighters. The UN peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) confirmed the death toll, while a local priest, Aime Lokana Dhego, reported six seriously wounded and several young people kidnapped. One survivor, who asked not to be named, described hearing 'gunshots and cries for help' before militants threatened to burn down his shop. 'We saw them armed with machetes and rifles. It was terrifying,' he said. The ADF, an Islamist group linked to Islamic State, has been responsible for years of violence in eastern DR Congo. Despite joint military operations by Ugandan and Congolese forces since 2021, the group continues to carry out brutal attacks. At a funeral in Komanda, mourners criticized security forces for failing to protect civilians. 'What are the security services doing? They're not doing their job,' one woman told AFP. MONUSCO deputy chief Vivian van de Perre condemned the attack, calling it 'revolting' and a violation of international humanitarian law. The Congolese army accused the ADF of seeking 'revenge on defenceless populations.' Pope Leo XIV expressed grief over the killings, while France condemned the attack and pledged support for Congolese authorities. - AFP
