Russia bombards Ukraine hours before key meeting on Trump NATO weapons deal
Russia attacked Ukraine overnight Monday and into the morning, killing two and injuring 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. "Russian strikes are always an assault on humanity — in Kyiv, a kindergarten caught fire, along with residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. Ordinary apartment buildings were damaged in Kharkiv, Ivano-Frankivsk and the region. 15 people have been injured, the youngest is a 12-year-old boy. Everyone is receiving assistance. Two people were killed in the attack," Zelenskyy noted in the post on Monday. "Throughout the night, Russia launched more than 420 drones and over 20 missiles, including ballistic ones. The waves of attacks lasted all night and continued into the morning. In the morning, "shaheds" once again targeted the Kharkiv region. During the shelling, mobile fire groups, army aviation, electronic warfare units, Air Force warriors, and interceptor drones were in action. Many targets were shot down — but unfortunately, not all. That is why we must continue scaling up our interceptor capabilities. This is the kind of solution that can protect us from massive attacks," he noted in another part of the lengthy post. Last week while speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, President Donald Trump spoke about a plan involving other countries purchasing military equipment from the U.S. and supplying military equipment to Ukraine. Trump indicated that equipment will be swiftly delivered to the battlefield for Ukraine's use. A NATO press release indicated that Rutte was slated to participate in a virtual Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting on Monday. "Last week, President Trump announced a new plan for large scale NATO weapons transfers and committed to getting these 'quickly distributed to the battlefield,'" UK Defense Secretary John Healey MP was expected to say, in part, when opening the meeting, according to a UK government press release. "The UK government backs this policy, and we will play our full part in its success to bolster Ukraine's immediate fight and to support our own and wider European security." Russia's Defense Ministry indicated that its forces downed 74 Ukrainian drones overnight, The Associated Press reported.

Rubio to meet Russia's Lavrov as strikes pound Kyiv
US secretary of state Marco Rubio arrives at Subang Airport for the Asean foreign ministers' meeting in Kuala Lumpur. (AP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : US secretary of state Marco Rubio will meet with his Russian counterpart in Malaysia on Thursday, as Moscow unleashed its second major attack on Ukraine in as many days. Rubio's first visit to Asia as secretary of state also comes as US President Donald Trump ramps up his trade war, threatening more than 20 countries with punitive tariffs. The top US diplomat is to meet Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in Kuala Lumpur, a senior state department official said. Russian strikes on Kyiv wounded at least seven people overnight, the city's military administration said early Thursday, warning of a ballistic missile threat. AFP journalists in Kyiv heard loud blasts echoing over the city throughout the night and saw flashes from air defence system lighting up the sky. Dozens of residents of the capital took shelter in a central metro station, an AFP reporter said, sleeping on mats, calming pets and waiting out the attack on camping furniture. That came a day after Russia's biggest missile and drone attack on Ukraine in more than three years of war – and after Trump launched an expletive-filled attack on Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump accused Putin of talking 'bullshit' about Ukraine, saying that the US would send Kyiv more weapons to defend itself. Rubio and Lavrov last met in person in February in Saudi Arabia, following a rapprochement between Trump and Putin. The two diplomats have also spoken multiple times by phone. After Malaysia, Lavrov will visit North Korea this weekend, the latest in a series of high-profile visits by top Moscow officials as the two countries deepen military ties. Pyongyang has emerged as one of the Kremlin's main allies during its Ukraine invasion, sending thousands of troops to Russia's Kursk region to oust Kyiv's forces and providing the Russian army with artillery shells and missiles. 'No passing storm' US officials said ahead of Rubio's trip that Washington was 'prioritising' its commitment to East Asia and Southeast Asia. But Trump has also threatened more than 20 countries, many in Asia, with punitive duties ranging from 20 to 50%, and announced a 50% toll on copper imports and a possible 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned Asia's top diplomats on Wednesday of a new era when tariffs are among the 'sharpened instruments of geopolitical rivalry.' 'This is no passing storm, it is a new weather of our time,' Anwar said as the meeting of the 10-nation bloc got underway. Trump said Monday that duties he had suspended in April would snap back – even more steeply – on Aug 1. Among those targeted were top trade partners Japan and South Korea, which each face 25% tariffs. Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Myanmar – all members of Asean – face duties ranging from 20% to 40% if they do not strike deals with Washington by Trump's new deadline. The levels were not too far from those originally threatened in April, although some rates were notably lower this time. Vietnam, which is also an Asean member, is one of only two countries to have reached a tentative agreement with Trump. Rubio will attend a post-ministerial conference and a meeting by East Asian foreign ministers – which will also see Japan, South Korea and China participating. He will also meet with Anwar and hold trilateral talks with the Philippines and Japan. A senior US official said the issue of tariffs was expected to be raised at the talks in Kuala Lumpur, and that Rubio would likely tell Asean that the US wants to 'rebalance' its trade relationships. Rubio's Chinese counterpart Wang Yi is also visiting Malaysia.

Russia says it will repair bombers damaged by Ukraine's drones
MOSCOW, June 5 (Reuters) - Russian aircraft were damaged but not destroyed in a June 1 attack by Ukraine, and they will be restored, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with the state news agency TASS. "The equipment in question, as was also stated by representatives of the Ministry of Defence, was not destroyed but damaged. It will be restored," Ryabkov said. The United States assesses that Ukraine's drone attack over the weekend hit as many as 20 Russian warplanes, destroying around 10 of them, two U.S. officials told Reuters, a figure that is about half the number estimated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump in a telephone conversation on Wednesday that Moscow would have to respond to the June 1 attack.
