Kremlin discloses content of Putin-Trump conversation (FULL STATEMENT)
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, have held a lengthy telephone conversation on Thursday, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov has announced. The two leaders discussed ongoing Ukraine peace talks, the volatile state of affairs in the Middle East, and Russia-US cooperation, he stated. Below is the full text of Ushakov's statement as published on the Kremlin website. Dear colleagues, Another almost hour-long telephone conversation between President of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and President of the United States Donald Trump has just concluded. Donald Trump began the conversation by announcing that the US Congress passed his administration's flagship bill envisaging reforms in taxation, immigration, and the energy sector. President Trump himself calls it the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'. Vladimir Putin wished Donald Trump success in implementing the changes he envisioned and, naturally, offered greetings for Independence Day, the national day of the United States, which will be celebrated tomorrow. At the same time, it was noted by our side that Russia had played a significant part in the establishment of the United States as a nation, including during the War of Independence, fought 250 years ago, and later during the Civil War, which ended 160 years ago. It was stated that our countries are bound not only by their alliance during World Wars One and Two, but also by deeper historical ties. Incidentally, Vladimir Putin mentioned that just before speaking with Donald Trump, he had a conversation with representatives of Russia's business community. One of the ideas suggested during that meeting was holding an exchange of motion pictures promoting traditional values, which both we and the Trump administration hold dear. President Trump reacted immediately and said he liked this idea. There was a detailed discussion of the situation surrounding Iran, and the state of affairs in the Middle East in general. The Russian side emphasized it was crucial to settle any and all contentious issues, differences, and conflicts exclusively via political and diplomatic means. The two leaders agreed to maintain contact on the issue between the respective foreign services, defense ministries, and presidential aides. The latest developments in Syria were addressed as well. Similarly, the Russian and US sides intend to continue the dialogue on the matter. Naturally, the issues surrounding Ukraine were also discussed. Donald Trump has once again raised the issue of ending the hostilities as soon as possible. In turn, Vladimir Putin noted that we still continued the search for a political, negotiated solution to the conflict. He informed his counterpart on the progress in implementing the humanitarian agreements reached during the second round of direct Russian-Ukrainian talks held in Istanbul. He also noted Russia was willing to pursue negotiations. Additionally, the President of Russia said that Russia would strive to achieve its goals, namely the elimination of the well-known root causes that led to the current state of affairs, the bitter confrontation that we are seeing now. Russia will not back down from these goals. While exchanging views on bilateral matters, the two sides confirmed their mutual interest in implementing a number of promising projects in economy, notably the energy sector and space exploration. Overall, I would like to point out that the conversation between the two presidents has, as always, shown that they are on the same page. It was candid, business-minded, and concrete. The two presidents will naturally continue communicating and will have another conversation soon. Thank you.

Kremlin denies dragging out Ukraine peace process
The Kremlin on Wednesday rejected Ukrainian and European accusations that it was stalling Ukraine peace talks saying it plans to name its conditions for a ceasefire, but did not give a time frame. 'Nobody is interested in dragging out this process. Everyone is working dynamically,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in response to a question about when a 'memorandum' announced by Putin can be expected. 'Separately, there will be a list of conditions for a ceasefire. This was agreed at Istanbul talks,' he said, without saying when either would be published or passed to Kyiv.

Poep Leo XIV has confirmed his willingness for the Vatican to host the next round of Ukraine peace talks, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni said. "Finding in the Holy Father confirmation of the readiness to host the next talks between the parties in the Vatican, the prime minister expressed deep gratitude (to) Pope Leo XIV for his unceasing commitment to peace," a statement from Ms Meloni's office said. The Vatican has not commented on possibly hosting peace talks. The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said Russia 's failure to negotiate in good faith should trigger threatened US sanctions. The UK and the EU announced new waves of sanctions against Russia on Tuesday. The British measures alone impact around 100 entities and individuals. Vladimir Putin not ‘genuine in seeking peace' in Ukraine after skipping talks, PM says
Anthony Albanese has taken a shot at Vladimir Putin for not turning up to Ukraine peace talks that he proposed. The Russian President was supposed to attend the talks in Turkey last week but skipped them without giving a reason. The Prime Minister on Sunday said it showed Mr Putin was not serious about bringing an end to the three-year conflict. 'We, of course, have seen recently President Putin proposed a meeting in Türkiye and then to not turn up to that meeting,' Mr Albanese told reporters in Rome. 'That says something about whether they are genuine in seeking peace. 'But certainly, (Ukrainian) President Zelenksyy reaffirmed his view that he wants to see peace, of course, in Ukraine, but he also wants to be directly involved clearly in those negotiations. 'The United States has an important role to play as well.' Earlier, Mr Albanese vowed to consider sending Australian peacekeepers to Ukraine in a rare face-to-face meeting with the country's president in Rome. The Prime Minister met Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the Pope Leo XIV's inauguration on Sunday. In opening remarks, the two leaders heaped praise on each other, with the Ukrainian President congratulating Mr Albanese on Labor's landslide federal election win. Mr Albanese said he 'made it clear' during the election campaign the Australian government 'is very supportive of your struggle and we see your struggle as being about your national sovereignty, your right to determine your own future'. 'The Russian illegal aggression needs to be resisted and we stand with Ukraine very clearly and unequivocally,' he said. 'We have been participants in the discussions that have been convened by (British) Prime Minister Starmer and (French) President Macron. 'It's always at strange hours in Australia, some very late night meetings that I have participated in. 'We've said that if a peace process emerges, we would consider being involved in a coalition of the willing. 'Until then we'll continue to provide support.' Mr Zelensky thanked Mr Albanese for the defence assistance and for backing peacekeeping efforts. 'I think that it's not strange we are both allies,' he said. 'I think it's great that we have so many allies in different continents. 'Together, we can really move this situation to closer to peace, with pressure on Russia.' Mr Albanese also raised the jailing of Australian fighter Oscar Jenkins. Russian authorities in Ukraine's occupied Luhansk region earlier this week sentenced Mr Jenkins to 13 years in a penal colony for fighting as a mercenary, complicating any prisoner swap talks. He was serving with Ukraine's International Legion – a formal part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – when he was captured late last year near Makiivka, a tiny village on the Zherebets River in Luhansk. 'The Russian so-called courts have brought down an outrageous ruling, and we continue to seek his freedom and his return to Australia, and we thank you for the assistance in that,' Mr Albanese said. In a press conference later, he told reporters that he and Mr Zelenskyy 'had a discussion about not just Oscar Jenkins but other cases as well'. The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it does not know how many Australians are in Ukraine.
