Ukraine and Russia conduct another POW swap
Ukraine and Russia conducted another POW swap -- the fourth one in a week -- the warring sides said on Saturday, under agreements reached in Istanbul earlier this month. "We continue to take our people out of Russian captivity. This is the fourth exchange in a week," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media. "In accordance with the Russian-Ukrainian agreements... another group of Russian servicemen was returned from the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime," Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram. Kyiv also said it had received another batch of 1,200 unidentified bodies from Russia, which it said Russia claimed "belong to Ukrainian citizens, including military personnel," as part of the Istanbul agreements as well. Ukraine did not say whether it returned any bodies to Russia. Photos published by Zelensky on Telegram showed men of various ages, mostly with shaved heads, wearing camouflage and draped in Ukrainian flags. Some were injured, others disembarked from buses and hugged those welcoming them, or were seen calling someone by phone, sometimes covering their faces or smiling. Moscow's defence ministry released its own video showing men in uniforms holding Russian flags, clapping and chanting "Russia, Russia", "glory to Russia" and "hooray", some raising their fists in the air. The exchange came as Russia repeatedly rejected ceasefire calls and intensified its offensive along the front line, and especially in the northeastern Sumy region, where it seeks to establish a "buffer zone" to protect its Kursk region, previously partly occupied by Ukraine. Zelensky claimed Russia's advance on Sumy was stopped, adding that Kyiv's forces have managed to retake one village. According to the Ukrainian president, Russia was using 53,000 men in the Sumy operation. bur-asy/rmb

Ukrainian woman, 6-year-old daughter found murdered in Belgium
A 46-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 6-year-old daughter were found murdered on June 6 in the city of Leuven, Belgium, authorities reported. The woman and her daughter were found after first responders were called to the scene of fire in the community of Haasrode. Both victims were found in the fire, and had previously suffered stab wounds, Belgian media outlet VRT reported. Authorities believe that the fire was deliberative and suspect foul play. The Ukrainian family, which was not named, had been living in Belgium for three years. The murdered woman's 16-year-old son was at school of the time of the murder. VRT reported that the father of the murdered girl is Ukrainian soldier currently serving on the front line. No additional details were released as the investigation into the double homicide is ongoing. A number of Ukrainian citizens have been killed or injured in attacks in multiple European cities, including in hate-motivated attacks. In February 2024, a 15-year-old Ukrainian boy received severe head injuries and was taken to the hospital after his attacker allegedly made xenophobic remarks before the attack. BREAKING NEWS 'Russian links to Starmer arson attacks' are probed by Government after three charged over alleged plot to set fire to two homes and car linked to PM
Government officials are investigating possible Russian links to the arson attacks at properties linked to Sir Keir Starmer, it has been claimed. Two properties and a car were all set alight earlier this month, with police charging three men over the attacks. Petro Pochynok, 34, is accused of conspiring to damage by fire the PM's former Toyota Rav4, a property where he once lived and his family's former house with intent to endanger life. Models Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Stanislav Carpiuc, 26, are also charged with plotting arsons between April 17 and May 13. And now officials are probing whether the men, who were all born in Ukraine, were recruited by the Kremlin, a Whitehall source has said. But they added it is one of many lines of investigation, with police keeping an 'open mind'. The charges relate to a vehicle fire in Kentish Town on May 8, a fire at a house in Islington on May 11 and a fire at a property in Kentish Town in the early hours of May 12. While Pochynok and Lavrynovych are Ukrainian citizens, Carpiuc is Romanian. Lavrynovych, of Sydenham, south-east London has been charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life. All three men have been charged with the conspiracy charge. Two of the fires occurred in Kentish Town, north London - one in the early hours of May 12 at the home where Sir Keir lived before he became Prime Minister and moved into Downing Street, while the second occurred when a car was set alight in the same street on May 8. The other, third fire, took place on May 11 at the front door of a house converted into flats in Islington. All three accused men, who deny the charges against them, were remanded in custody by Judge Daniel Sternberg to appear at the Old Bailey on June 6.
