Rishabh Pant (Pic credit: ICC) India were dealt a severe blow on Day 1 of the fourth Test as wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant retired hurt on 37 after sustaining a painful foot injury, potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the series. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant's injury came in dramatic fashion when attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. UltraEdge confirmed a faint inside edge onto his right boot before it struck his foot. After being taken off in a golf cart, India's innings stalled. Pant's departure not only removed a key momentum-shifter — he had scored 462 runs in the series at an average of 77 — but also robbed India of their premier wicketkeeper-batter. 05:13 Rishabh Pant injury update: Will he come out to bat on Day 2? More on his swelling, fitness status Speaking on Cricbuzz, former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik described the concern starkly: 'How big a loss is this for the Test, for India and in general, the series as well, if he doesn't come back to play?' Former England captain Michael Vaughan backed the sentiment, suggesting Pant's absence could significantly tilt the game: 'If Rishabh's going to be out for the match, to play against England with only 10 batters is a massive concern. I think missing Pant gives England about a 25% advantage in terms of winning this Test match.' Vaughan went further, calling for a change in policy: 'If he's injured and likely to miss the rest of the Test, why can't we have a substitute? We have concussion subs — why not for a broken foot?' 'He was in a lot of pain': Sai Sudharsan admits Rishabh Pant's absence could hurt India He also issued a warning on the total India would need to post: 'India will need at least 350, and more likely 400, to put England under pressure here. Without Pant, that becomes even more difficult.' Trailing 1–2 overall, India must secure a win at Old Trafford — a ground they've never conquered in nine previous attempts — to keep their series aspirations alive. Pant's looming absence has forced the team to contemplate reworking their strategy. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here. Jasprit Bumrah Goes Down With Injury, But Takes Wicket Next Ball
Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah had an eventful few minutes at Lord's, taking two wickets, narrowly missing another, and suffering a calf injury scare. Jasprit Bumrah had a roller-coaster few minutes at Lord's on Sunday, which involved two wickets, an almost-wicket where the bails didn't fall despite the ball hitting the off-stump, and an injury scare in between. India's ace, who took a fifer in the first innings of this third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar, got his first of the second innings on the opening ball of the 56th over. It was a brilliant yorker, and Brydon Carse had no answer. Four balls later, he tried to catch Jofra Archer off guard in the same way. The ball was just outside off, and there was a sound as it reached wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. India reviewed and UltraEdge reported a flat line when the ball passed the bat, but replays showed that the ball might have hit the off-stump instead — so gently that the bails didn't fall off, despite these being the light wooden poles. Then in the next over, Bumrah bowled two balls to Chris Woakes and seemed to have pulled something up in his calf after the second. He went down in pain and the physio ran in to apply spray and a bandage. Bumrah was seen hobbling after that too — a bad sign for India, considering all the worry about his workloads. However, the pacer continued in the over and in the very next ball — a short-of-good-length nip-backer, Woakes was caught, indecisive in trying to defend it, and ended up edging it to his stumps. It was his second wicket of the innings, seventh of the match, and 49th in Tests in England. India will want to be careful with Bumrah's fitness India came into this series having already decided that Bumrah would only play three Tests. This is his second, and he has bowled a ton of overs, being India's leader of the attack. They'll want to avoid a repeat of the tour of Australia where he broke down in the middle of the Sydney Test owing to a huge workload. There's a nine-day-long break between the third and fourth Tests and India will be able to decide if they have to play him at Old Trafford or not. First Published: July 13, 2025, 21:20 IST
