Over 1.5k cases registered against illegal businesses in Nanded range
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A total of 1,561 cases were registered and articles worth over Rs7.8 crore seized in a month-long crackdown on illegal businesses in four districts of Nanded, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Latur. . Nanded range's deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Shahaji Umap stated that the drive, which began on May 1, targeted illegal activities including illicit liquor trade, gambling, online betting, gutkha sale, narcotics, prostitution, and unauthorised sand extraction and transportation. In each of the four districts, the operations were carried out not only at the police station level but also at the division and district levels. Police inspectors, sub-divisional police officers, local crime branches, and special police teams carried out coordinated actions. Each district's superintendent of police oversaw the operations personally, said an officer. During the drive, the highest seizure worth Rs3.08 crore was from Nanded, which saw 371 cases registered. This included 227 prohibition-related cases worth Rs19.70 lakh, 102 gambling cases worth Rs8.96 lakh, and 42 miscellaneous offences, including drug and sand-related crimes, worth Rs2.79 crore. In Parbhani, police registered 376 cases and seized contraband worth Rs2.16 crore, while Hingoli saw 403 cases with Rs73.33 lakh in seizures. Latur recorded 400 cases and recovered illegal goods worth Rs1.81 crore. Notably, Hingoli registered the highest number of gutkha cases (10), while Latur had the most prohibition cases (319). A senior officer said the crackdown would intensify further in the current month. "Our second phase of the drive will last the entire June. During this drive, there will be at least four surprise raids and a targeted investigation of gutka stockpiles and transport networks," said Umap. Authorities are also examining records to initiate stringent legal action under MPDA (Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities), MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act), and externment laws against key repeat offenders. DIG Umap has appealed to the public to report any information about illegal businesses in their areas by contacting local police stations or via the official website stating, "Public cooperation is vital to uproot such criminal networks from society."
