Sovereignty reigns over Journalism again in Belmont
Sovereignty won the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday with Journalism coming in second. (AL BELLO) Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty won the 157th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, surging past favored Journalism just as he did at Churchill Downs to finish with two legs of this year's Triple Crown. After sitting out the Preakness, won in scintillating fashion by Journalism, Sovereignty returned to win the anticipated rematch in convincing fashion, pulling away in the final straight to relegate Journalism to second again. Advertisement Baeza was third to complete the repeat of the Kentucky Derby one-two-three. Italian jockey Umberto Rispoli guided the Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism to the front as they turned for home, closely tracked by Sovereignty -- who was taken wide by jockey Junior Alvarado and powered past to win by three lengths. Sovereignty, who had given the Godolphin stables a long-awaited first Kentucky Derby victory, became the first horse two win two legs of the Triple Crown since Justify became the 13th horse to sweep all three in 2018. Michael Banahan, Godolphin USA's director of bloodstock, said the decision to give Sovereignty the five weeks' rest he has become used to paid off with a "fantastic result". Advertisement "We knew he was a very good horse going into the Kentucky Derby and he showed it that day. "And to come back here again and beat a really, really good horse like Journalism today, running one-two again like they did in the Derby -- it was a fantastic result for us here." Sovereignty trainer Bill Mott said he was "on a cloud". "The horse proved himself," McCarthy said. "The form held up -- the first three finishers in the Derby were one-two-three today, and I think it just was a great race." For the second straight year the grade one race, with a purse of $2 million, was run at Saratoga because of ongoing renovations at Belmont Park, the distance again reduced from the Belmont's traditional 1 1/2 miles to 1 1/4. Journalism was the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races this year. bb/sev

Sovereignty surges down the stretch to win the Belmont Stakes
Sovereignty roared down the stretch under jockey Junior Alvarado, passing favorite Journalism to decisively win the 157th Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. The race, the last leg of the Triple Crown, lived up to its billing as a rematch between Sovereignty, who won the Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes winner Journalism, who went off as the 2-1 favorite Saturday. Trainer Bill Mott held Sovereignty out of last month's Preakness Stakes to prepare for the Belmont, which was held at Saratoga for the second straight year because of renovations being made at Belmont Park. That strategy paid off when his horse, which went off at 5-2 odds, finished the mile-and-a-quarter race in 2 minutes 0.69 seconds. Advertisement Sovereignty and Journalism finished 1-2 at Churchill Downs, with both making late charges to the front of the field. Journalism was also the favorite in that race, but Sovereignty held on to become the first horse to finish first at the Kentucky Derby for trainer Bill Mott. Mott won the Kentucky Derby in 2019 with Country House, but that came after Maximum Security was disqualified despite crossing the finish line first. Journalism authored a thrilling Preakness victory at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. After spending much of the race in the middle of the pack, Journalism, under jockey Umberto Rispoli, found a small gap between two other horses. Despite being bumped and nearly knocked off course, Journalism surged to the lead down the stretch, passing Gosger steps before the finish line. Baeza, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby, opened with the third-best odds to win (4-1) and finished third. This story will be updated.

(AP Photo/Stephanie Scarbrough) SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness winner Journalism opened as the 8-5 favorite in the Belmont Stakes when post positions were drawn Monday for the final leg of the Triple Crown. Derby winner Sovereignty was set as the second choice on the morning line at odds of 2-1 and drew the No. 2 post. Journalism, near the outside with the No. 7 post, is the only horse running in all three Triple Crown races. Advertisement 'He's been kind of the same horse since July of last summer,' trainer Michael McCarthy said. 'He does everything you'd ask a good horse to do: He eats well, trains well, acts well. I thought through the last six, seven weeks here, his energy's been the same throughout.' Sovereignty is back after owners and trainer Bill Mott opted to skip the Preakness and run the Belmont on five weeks of rest, and things have gone swimmingly since he arrived at historic Saratoga Race Couse. 'We've been very lucky with everything that's gone on sine he's been here,' Mott said. 'He's been moving well over the track.' Sovereignty and Journalism in the field set up this Belmont, the second at Saratoga while renovations are made to its usual home on Long Island, to be a rematch between the first two Triple Crown winners who were also first and second the Derby. Advertisement 'He's improved, as I think as many of these horses have,' Mott said of Sovereignty. 'I think this entire group, if you look at their form and the way they've developed over the course of this year, I think they've made steady progress and it should be an interesting race." No. 6 Baeza, who finished third in Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, opened at 4-1. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's Rodriguez, who was scratched from the Derby because of a minor foot bruise and held out of the Preakness, was next at 6-1 and will leave the starting gate from the No. 3 post. The field of eight horses also includes No. 8 Heart of Honor, tied for the longest shot on the board at 30-1 after finishing fifth in the Preakness. New to the Triple Crown trail are No. 1 Hill Road (10-1), No. 5 Crudo (15-1) and No. 4 Uncaged (30-1). Journalism, who was favorited in the Derby and the Preakness and at the moment is the top 3-year-old in the country, looks like the horse to beat. Advertisement 'Saratoga is very good for horses,' McCarthy said. 'He seems a little bit re-energized up here. We're looking for a wonderful renewal of the Belmont here on Saturday.' ___ AP horse racing:
