A pleasant, seasonal close to the work week for Utah's weather

SALT LAKE CITY () — Happy Friday, Utah! A nice July day ahead for the Wasatch Front with seasonal temperatures in northern and central Utah, with high heat holding steady in southern Utah. You can expect highs in the low 90s along the Wasatch Front and into central Utah, while St. George stays above the average of 102 degrees and makes a run for 106 today. Bottom Line? Average temperatures with sunshine and dry skies for Friday; high heat holds in Southern Utah We will see fire conditions ease slightly with winds relaxing a bit, but dry conditions persist. Our latest drought monitor percentages indicate drought worsening in Utah, with all of the beehive state facing moderate drought, and more than half of Utah now in the severe drought category. Lack of precipitation will continue over the weekend and into next week. Above-average heat will once again build through the weekend and into early next week thanks to high pressure. At last check, there's potential to see triple digits return to the Wasatch Front, and they won't budge in southern Utah for the next seven days. With high heat ahead, you will want to stay on top of the forecast. We'll keep you updated in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah! FEMA authorizes funds for fighting Deer Creek Fire

SAN JUAN COUNTY, Utah () — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced on Saturday it has authorized the use of federal funds to help fight the Deer Creek Fire. The Deer Creek Fire, which started on Thursday, is estimated to be at 7,500 acres and is zero percent contained as of Saturday afternoon. FEMA approved the state of Utah's request after it was received this afternoon and determining that the fire threatened such destruction that it would constitute a major disastser. The Deer Creek Fire has destroyed ten homes and was threatening another 140 homes and 600 other structures, and mandatory evacuations are in place for 400 people. The authorization allows FEMA funding to become available to pay 75 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs under approved grants. These grants do not cover individual home or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire. Teen arrested for murder at Kearns High School parking lot

KEARNS, Utah (ABC4) — An 18-year-old has been arrested for murder after an armed robbery went awry at a Kearns High School parking lot early Sunday morning. Brandon Ray Hollins, 18, was arrested in Salt Lake County on charges of murder (first-degree felony) and aggravated robbery (first-degree felony). Shortly before 1:50 a.m. on May 18, Unified Police responded to a shots-fired call at the north parking lot of Kearns High School, located at 5525 South Cougar Lane. Upon arrival, officers found a male lying on the ground next to a gold Chevy Malibu. Officers began life-saving measures before the male was taken by medical personnel to Intermountain Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. PREVIOUSLY: 17-year-old killed in shooting at Kearns High School According to Lt. Melody Cutler, Unified PD, the incident was a robbery-gone-bad. The seller had reportedly showed up at the parking lot to sell champagne bottles. Another car — a gray Honda Accord — with multiple individuals inside showed up to the parking lot to make a purchase. As the Accord arrived, the seller went to his trunk where he kept the bottles. According to court documents, two armed males got out of the Accord and began to attack the seller, who then ran to his driver's seat, grabbed a gun, and fired at the individuals as he ran away. One individual was shot and left lying on the ground. The driver of the Accord — later identified as Hollins — was reportedly seen on camera walking around his body, picking up items, and getting back in the Accord before driving away. The seller flagged down police as they arrived at the scene. He was taken into custody without incident and interviewed regarding the incident. Police later went to search for the gray Honda Accord and found an address where the car was registered. Officers then arrested Hollins, finding guns and ammunition matching casings found at the scene. 'Brandon Hollins was involved in an aggravated robbery. Brandon drove the vehicle to the scene and was a participant in an aggravated robbery,' court documents state. 'During the course of the robbery, [the victim] was shot and killed by the individual that Brandon, [the victim], and at least one other individual were trying to rob. Brandon has multiple videos and photos posted to his instagram account that show him with guns and firing guns. There is substantial evidence to support the charges of murder and aggravated robbery against Brandon Hollins.' Hollins was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on the aforementioned charges. No further information is available at this time. Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
