Landscaper arrested after inviting hundreds to unauthorized party while homeowners away, cops say
A North Carolina landscaper was arrested after inviting hundreds of people to a party while the homeowners were on vacation, police said. Michael Brown is accused of inviting as many as 400 people to the house party in the Charlotte suburb of Weddington last Saturday night. 'He represented himself as the homeowner and said he was having a party,' Lieutenant James Maye of the Union County Sheriff's Office told WSOC. 'He was, in fact, not the homeowner, not related to the homeowner, but in fact was the yard guy.' Maye added that 'a lot of underage drinking' was going on at the party, which was shut down by the police after neighbors complained. Brown was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, second-degree trespassing, and obtaining property by false pretenses, among other charges. Police said that Brown 'charged each person attending the party an entry fee that he then pocketed' in a statement shared on Facebook. 'After several additional epic failures at telling the truth, he finally admitted he was the lawn guy and had no relation to the homeowners whatsoever,' the statement added. Brown was taken to the Union County Detention Center, where he was 'specifically told he was a guest at our Detention Center, not a resident, and ordered not to throw any parties in our phone cell while trying to secure a bonding company,' police jested in the statement. The landscaper posted a $10,000 secured bond and is no longer in police custody. He told WSOC that he disputed the version of events shared by the sheriff's office. Brown also told the news outlet that he was even planning to host another party and that he doesn't believe he has lost the client, who was still on vacation when the outlet interviewed the landscaper. 'I'm just waiting for them to come home, just so I can continue to build my relationship and we can move forward,' Brown said.

Man hired to mow lawn at ritzy North Carolina home throws massive party with hundreds of guests
A landscaper threw a wild party at his clients' jaw-dropping North Carolina mansion while they were on vacation - but he claims he did nothing wrong. Michael Brown, who runs Brown's Dream Team Landscaping, has previously mowed the lawn of a $4.3 million house in Weddington. But on Saturday afternoon, the 37-year-old had other plans at the ritzy residence - hosting a massive blowout without the owners' permission. Hundreds of guests - mostly teens and young adults - flocked to the mansion, each paying an entry fee that Brown pocketed, according to the Union County Sherriff's Office. With music blasting and cars clogging up the typically quiet street, baffled neighbors grew concerned and filed complaints. 'I was like, that's not a venue, how are they managing this, so, we were disturbed with all the traffic and the cars and the people and not knowing what's happening,' nearby resident Wendy Squires, told WBTV. Police arrived to shut down the illegal chaotic event and identified Brown as the ringleader. Brown allegedly claimed he was the homeowner and the party was a celebration for his son's graduation. But he was arrested after cops found 'holes' in his story. The party-throwing landscaper was charged with breaking and entering, second-degree trespassing, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, injury to real property and obtaining property by false pretenses. Brown posted his $10,000 bond later that day - and has shown no regret for hosting the rager. 'I didn't break the law, I just broke some rules of probably what the owners didn't want me to do, but I didn't break the law,' Brown told WSOCTV9. He also admitted to throwing the party for his son and his friends for a profit. 'I just want to always do something where we could create an income and bring a positive environment for his friends,' he told the outlet. That 'positive environment,' according to Lieutenant James Maye, included 'a lot of underage drinking' among the 300 to 400 guests. Brown claimed he was not charging an 'entry fee' but making guests pay for security - a story cops are not buying, with Maye saying they recovered more than $3,000. 'The owner knew I was supposed to be there,' Brown claimed, later adding he's 'like their son' and is at there house nearly every day. That 'positive environment,' according to Lieutenant James Maye (pictured), included 'a lot of underage drinking' among the 300 to 400 guests He also expressed confidence that he did not lose a client over the matter. But the owners' son, Jante Burch, fiercely disputed those assertion. 'What I saw was a very egregious act in my mind. You had youth, they're smoking dope on my back porch, you're in the pool, you have violated,' Burch told WSOCTV9 after they spoke with Brown. 'I was very angry at the fact that this happened, I knew when I saw it that there was not way that my parents knew any of this.' The distressed son said his parent's stunning home was left a 'hot mess' and debunked Brown's sentiment that he has close ties with the family. 'Bro you cut the grass, you're the hired help so you were that for that reason, and that reason only,' he said. 'He's delusional, he is definitely delusional. In fact, not only has he lost a client, he's probably lost a lot of other clients that he had potentially gotten in that neighborhood.'

Suspected gunman in officer-involved shooting connected to homicide, investigators say
Evidence in an Indian Trail homicide began pointing to the suspect in an officer-involved shooting in Monroe just hours after his encounter with police. 18-year-old Joshua Sikes was shot and killed by police after he opened fire, shooting an officer early Saturday morning, officials said. Monroe Police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle along Old Charlotte Highway around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, officials said. The driver, who was later identified as Sikes, led officers on a pursuit where he opened fire and struck an officer. Sikes abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot into a heavily wooded area, according to reports. A large-scale manhunt followed. He was found armed with a rifle. He then began firing at officers again and was fatally shot by police. Several hours later, around 6 a.m., Union County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a home on the 2000 block of Astoria Drive in Indian Trail following reports of a man shot inside, officials said. READ: Monroe police identify gunman who allegedly shot officer after pursuit Deputies found 23-year-old Alvin Parson deceased inside the home upon arrival. Following the investigation, deputies said evidence quickly connected Sikes to the homicide. Officials said investigators believe Sikes shot and killed Parsons before his encounter with police, but he had not yet been identified as a suspect in the homicide. They also believe that Sikes fled the homicide scene in the same vehicle that police attempted to stop. 'Today's tragic events are a stark and sobering reminder of the daily risks faced by law enforcement officers,' Sheriff Eddie Cathey said. ''Routine' law enforcement activity can turn violent in an instant, as demonstrated by the calculated actions of this suspect. Our hearts go out to the family of Alvin Parson, whose life was senselessly taken, and to the brave Monroe Police officer who was injured while protecting our community. These acts of violence underscore the courage, training, and constant vigilance required of our law enforcement personnel, and their unwavering commitment to stand in defense of our citizens.' No additional details have been made available. This is a developing story. Check back with for updates. WATCH: Monroe police identify gunman who allegedly shot officer after pursuit

Marysville man charged with attempted aggravated murder in May 30 police shooting
Marysville police have identified the suspect they accuse of shooting at officers while they were responding to a domestic violence situation and whom a Union County sheriff's deputy subsequently shot multiple times. Dustin Edward Ohm, 29, of Marysville, has been charged with attempted aggravated murder and first-degree felony assault, according to a May 31 news release from Marysville police. Ohm will face more charges in connection with the shooting. Marysville officers responded at 2:16 a.m. May 30 to a report of a domestic dispute in the 900 block of White Oak Court, off Quail Hollow Drive and North Maple Street, police said previously. When officers arrived, police allege that Ohm pulled out a gun and shot at officers from his vehicle. The officers returned fire as Ohm drove from the scene, hitting a Marysville police cruiser with an officer inside as well as at least three other parked vehicles and a mailbox, police alleged. Marysville police, Union County sheriff's deputies and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers chased Ohm west along U.S. Route 33. His vehicle broke down in the median of U.S. 33 near Northwest Parkway, where he got out of the vehicle holding a gun, police alleged. That's when a sheriff's deputy shot Ohm multiple times. Officers began rendering aid until Marysville Fire Department paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a Columbus hospital. His condition remained unknown as of May 31. Marysville police said one of their officers suffered an injury in the initial shooting, but they did not elaborate. The officer was treated at a local hospital and released. No other officers or deputies were hurt. Reporter Shahid Meighan can be reached at smeighan@ at ShahidMeighan on X, and at on Bluesky. What we know about the shooting involving Marysville suspect, Union County sheriff's deputy
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate a Union County sheriff's deputy shooting a suspect multiple times after the man shot at Marysville police officers responding to a domestic violence call. The man, whom law enforcement had not identified as of May 30, was transported to a Marysville hospital before being transferred to a Columbus hospital. His condition is unknown, according to a statement released by Marysville police after the shooting. A Marysville police officer also suffered undisclosed injuries, was hospitalized and later released. He was not identified by police. Marysville police requested that Ohio BCI investigate the shooting, said BCI spokesman Steve Irwin. When reached by phone on the afternoon of May 30, Marysville police said they did not have any additional information beyond their statement they released on their Facebook page. Here's what we know so far about the incident: Marysville police said that officers responded at 2:16 a.m. on May 30 to a report of a domestic dispute in the 900 block of White Oak Court, located off Quail Hollow Drive and North Maple Street. When officers arrived, police said the suspect pulled out a gun and shot at officers from his vehicle. The officers returned fire as the suspect drove from the scene, striking a Marysville police cruiser with an officer inside as well as at least three other parked vehicles and a mailbox. Marysville police, Union County sheriff's deputies and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers pursued the suspect west along U.S. Route 33. His vehicle somehow became disabled in the median of U.S. 33 near Northwest Parkway, where he left the vehicle holding a gun, police said. That's when a sheriff's deputy shot the man multiple times. Law enforcement officers began rendering aid until paramedics from the Marysville Fire Department arrived and transported him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a Columbus hospital, his condition unknown. A Marysville police officer suffered an injury in the initial shooting, but police did not elaborate on what injuries the officer suffered. The officer was treated at a local hospital and released. No other officers or deputies were hurt. The man faces several felony charges, including assault on a peace officer, police said. The shooting closed the eastbound and westbound left-hand lanes of U.S. Route 33 near State Route 4 for several hours while authorities investigated the shooting. The roads reopened at around 9 a.m. A neighbor who asked not to be identified told The Dispatch that police had visited the home on White Oak Court several times prior to the May 30 incident. The neighbor said the home is owned by a woman who lives there with her boyfriend. Police have not confirmed that they have previously visited the address, and court records don't indicate any history of domestic violence calls to that address. The gunfire incident in Marysville marks the third time within a week that central Ohio law enforcement officers have come under gunfire in the line of duty. On the evening of Memorial Day, May 26, Daniel Weston Sherrer, 31, a Morrow County sheriff's deputy, was shot multiple times while responding to a domestic violence incident. Paramedics transported Sherrer to a local hospital, where he later died. The suspect, Brian Michael Wilson, 53, was also wounded in the shooting after Sherrer shot back and was initially hospitalized in serious condition. He has been charged with aggravated murder, according to Morrow County court records. Wilson has an extensive history of violence, according to Marion County court records. More than 300 people, including several central Ohio law enforcement agencies, attended a May 29 candlelight vigil at the Morrow County Sheriff's Office to honor Sherrer's life. The vigil included sermons from two Morrow County pastors as well as an honor guard demonstration from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. On May 28, two Mifflin Township police officers were shot while chasing a suspect who fled from them during a traffic stop. The suspect, 21-year-old Daveonte Dixon, has been charged with attempted murder and felonious assault. He was taken into custody on May 30 after shooting himself as law enforcement officers were closing in on him at an Obetz apartment complex, Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said at a press briefing at the apartments. No law enforcement officers fired their weapons. He was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Baldwin did not take any questions and said that another press conference would be held Monday morning to release further information. One of the Mifflin Township officers, who was shot in the arm, has been released from the hospital. The other officer, who was transported in critical condition but later upgraded to stable, underwent an 11-hour surgery on May 29 and is currently in the intensive care unit, according to Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9. He is expected to have a long recovery. Neither of the officers have been publicly identified. The FBI Cincinnati office offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Dixon's arrest. Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9, and the U.S. Marshals Service are also each offering $5,000, bringing the reward total to $40,000. It was not immediately clear if a tip led investigators to Dixon's location. Dispatch reporter Bailey Gallion contributed to this story.
