Large crowds begin marching to Dataran Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR: Large crowds of protesters joining the Pas-led rally have started marching to Dataran Merdeka while chanting "Long Live the People" and "Anwar Down". The protestors, carrying banners, are making their way to Dataran Merdeka, the main venue for the rally, from gathering points in Masjid Jamek, Central Market, and Sogo. Police anticipate a turnout of between 10,000 and 15,000 people at today's rally, aimed at pressuring the government over issues such as the rising cost of living and alleged institutional failures. There is still a large crowd in front of Sogo, which has yet to make its way to Dataran Merdeka. At Central Market, hundreds of participants dressed in black could be seen making their way towards Dataran Merdeka at 2.10pm. They are expected to march about a kilometre along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock en route to Dataran Merdeka. Policemen were spotted managing traffic as the group made their way down the main road. Meanwhile, members of Pas' Unit Amal were seen carrying medical kits and bottles of mineral water. Only one of the two lanes along the route remains open to traffic. Social activist Hishamuddin Rais was also among those in the crowd, along with several opposition politicians. A total of 16 roads will be closed for the rally, which is expected to end after 5.15pm.

Near Masjid Negara, some rallygoers had set up shops to sell t-shirts. Though rallygoers are prohibited from bringing children, some could be seen among the crowd.
