Pochettino blasts 'embarrassing' refs after USA-Mexico Gold Cup finale
United States Men's National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino led the Americans to a runner-up finish at the 2025 Gold Cup. Photo by Caroline Brehman/EPA-EFE July 7 (UPI) -- Coach Mauricio Pochettino gave credit to Mexico and said he wasn't "going to cry," but took aim at referees for what he called an "embarrassing" performance during the Americans' loss in the Gold Cup finale in Houston. The United States Men's National Team held a 1-0 lead through the majority of the first half, but surrendered two unanswered goals in the setback Sunday at NRG Stadium. Mexico held a 16-6 advantage in shots, including 8-3 edge in shots on target, en route to its second-consecutive Gold Cup crown. "It's tough to tell the truth," Pochettino told reporters. "We need to tell the truth. The truth is that we lost. Yes, we lost. We need to be self-critical, of course. But the reality is there. Everyone can see." The Americans were whistled for a dozen fouls, compared to 11 for Mexico. Winger Sebastian Berhalter assisted center back Chris Richards for their lone goal. Striker Raul Jimenez and center midfielder Edson Alvaraz scored for the Mexicans, who held a 60% to 40% advantage in possession. The Americans, who again played without several of their traditional lineup stars, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Antonee Robinson, used the same starting lineup as they did for the quarterfinals and semifinals. Richards struck for first blood just 3:30 into the rivalry match. That score came when Berhalter lifted a free kick from about 40 yards out, finding Richards for a header off the crossbar. Mexico threatened before Jimenez ripped in an equalizer in the 27th minute. The Mexican striker received a feed inside the box to spark that sequence. He used his first touch to blast a left-footed striker into the upper left corner of the net, beating American goalie Matt Freese for an equalizer. Jimenez celebrated that score by pulling out a Diogo Jota jersey, a tribute honoring the late Liverpool star. Freese and the American defense did not allow another Mexico goal for the remainder of the first half. The Americans also failed to convert several close chances in first half stoppage time. They threatened again when right back Max Arfsten carried the ball into the Mexico box in the 66th minute, leading to one of the most controversial sequences of the game. Arfsten first dribbled around Roberto Alvarado before right back Jorge Sanchez poked the ball away. Sanchez then put his left hand on top of the ball as he fell down while in the box, but referees did not whistle him for a handball, which would have given the Americans a penalty kick. Instead, Sanchez played the ball out of danger. The Mexicans scored the go-ahead goal about seven minutes later, with Alvarez heading in a deflected free kick in the 77th minute. Referees initially ruled that the score was off-side, but later overturned the call and allowed the goal. Pochettino responded by voicing his displeasure during a heated conversation with a nearby official, but the damage was done. The Mexico defense held up down the stretch to deny another equalizer and secure their title. "I'm not going to cry," Pochettino said, when asked about the handball. "I wanted to tell the truth, and the truth was that if that [handball] happened in the opposite [box] for sure it's penalty. "[Sanchez] was the player with the knee on the floor. He pushed the hand over the ball. It's not that the hand was on the floor and the ball touched. OK, well the excuses now, but you know that was a penalty and maybe 2-1 for us and maybe we now would be celebrating the trophy. "I think that it is clear and it's not about to cry, it's not about to complain. For me, it was embarrassing to see that situation and it's a shame." The Americans will play South Korea in a friendly Sept. 6 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J.

Gold Cup: USA beats Haiti to stay unbeaten, coach wowed by Tillman
American midfielder Malik Tillman scored in the 10th minute of a win over Haiti in the Gold Cup group stage Sunday in Arlington, Texas. Photo by Dustin Safranek/EPA-EFE June 23 (UPI) -- Malik Tillman drew first blood before Patrick Agyemang played hero with a 75th minute game-winner to lead the United States Men's National Team past Haiti, securing a perfect 3-0 record in the Gold Cup group stage. Brenden Aaronson and John Tolkin logged assists in the 2-1 victory Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Americans outshot the Haitians 18-8, dominated possession 65% to 34.2% and held a 606-310 edge in passes. "Overall it was a good performance," U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. "I think we were not a clinic with the chances that we had. I think we should have scored more." Pochettino, who is now 8-5 as coach of the Americans, said his players overcame doubt from an early error to secure the win and group-stage crown. That miscue came in the 19th minute, when a turnover from goalie Matt Freese led to an immediate equalizer. "We scored and then had an accident that we conceded a goal," Pochettino said. "I think that created a little bit of doubt in us. I think it was tough to deal with that. But I think overall the performance was good in the first half. "The second half was a little bit better." The Americans' initial attack was denied during the game's first scoring sequence. Aaronson eventually regained control of the ball after his first shot was denied. The veteran winger then got the ball on his right foot and sliced a cross toward the far post. Tillman hovered into the area and finished the play with a header, which beat Haitian goalie Johny Placide. The 10th-minute score was the third of the tournament for the American center midfielder. "Malik, it is difficult to define him," Pochettino said of Tillman. "What a player that is showing all of his talent and capacity. .... What a talented player. So pleased with him. "He is a lovely guy. He started to find himself. When he can show it, it is welcome. I think the team is much better when he is involved in the game." The elation from the Tillman score lasted less than nine minutes, with the Haitians capitalizing on the Americans' 19th-minute error for their equalizer. Center back Tim Ream started that sequence when he passed back to Freese. The American goalie then mishit a short pass to his left, kicking the ball directly to Haitian winger Louicius Don Deedson. Louicius proceeded to finish with a left-footed shot just inside the far post. The Americans manufactured several more chances, but went into the second half tied with their visitors. They appeared to earn another lead in the 64th minute, but that score was negated because Tillman hit the ball into the net with his arm. Agyemang eventually netted the game-winner by beating Placide in the 75th minute. Tolkin sparked that score with a pass from behind midfield. Agyemang tracked down the long feed from the American left back, tapped the ball around Placide at the top of the box and used his left boot to calmly ground a shot into the right side of the net. The American defense held up over the remainder of regulation to secure the group-stage title. The U.S. men will take on Costa Rica in a Gold Cup quarterfinal at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The winner will play in a semifinal at 6 p.m. July 2 in St. Louis. The Gold Cup final will be held at 6 p.m. July 6 in Houston.

Christian Pulisic Turns Heads with Reaction to Criticism Amid USMNT Absence
Christian Pulisic Turns Heads with Reaction to Criticism Amid USMNT Absence originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Thursday, the United States Men's National Team made it official that head coach Mauricio Pochettino will be heading to the CONCACAF Gold Cup — the final major tournament before the United States co-hosts the 2026 World Cup — without team captain Christian Pulisic. Advertisement According to ESPN, Pulisic and his team proposed the break to the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) after Pulisic played more than 3,500 minutes in all competitions for AC Milan across the 2024-2025 season. Fellow national team veterans Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, Giovanni Reyna, Antonee Robinson and Yunus Musah are also missing after their respective European campaigns. Since Pulisic's absence was first reported, criticism has been repeatedly aimed at the Yanks' No. 10, most recently from USMNT legend Landon Donovan on Sunday. United States Men's National Team and AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic (10).Jeff Curry-Imagn Images The Pulisic family did not take kindly to Donovan's veiled comments after 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo battled through injury to help Portugal win the UEFA Nations League — a continental trophy similar to the Gold Cup. Advertisement "This is what it means to represent your country,' Donovan said on Fox Sports' coverage of Portugal's win over Spain. '(Cristiano Ronaldo) is 40 years old. He played a long-(expletive) season. He was out there grinding and hurt himself in the process. And I can't help but think about some of our guys who are on vacation not wanting to play in Gold Cup. It's pissing me off.' Pulisic's father, Mark, heard Donovan's criticism and clapped back Sunday night on Instagram. "This guy is .. talking about commitment.. look in the mirror + grow a pair and call names out or are you afraid next time you want an interview you will get rejected again," he wrote in an Instagram post. Advertisement His son liked the post — the first public response of any kind from the American captain since his Gold Cup absence was first reported. USMNT fans sounded off with their thoughts on social media. "This is getting spicy," wrote one fan on X. "I remember how awkward Pulisic and Donovan were speaking to each other last year. I just assumed they were both introverted but looks like something was already brewing in the background." "This is reminiscent of Claudio Reyna coming to his son's defense," noted a response. "Circumstances are different but it is sad that this kind of drama follows our star USMNT players." Advertisement "Donovan helped the US make the quarterfinals of the World Cup," said one reply. "What has Pulisic won with the USMNT?" "Why hasn't Pulisic said ANYTHING himself?" a fan said of the captain. "He's letting everyone else talk for him. It doesn't show any sense of leadership or responsibility." Pulisic has 32 goals and 18 assists in 76 appearances for the United States, but he will not add to that total this summer. After losing to Turkiye 2-1 on Saturday, USMNT plays another warm up friendly on Tuesday against Switzerland before beginning the Gold Cup on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago.
