‘Modern agri practices must be reached out among farmers'

FAISALABAD: The agrarian research and modern agricultural practices must be reached out among the farming community to increase the productivity and raise socioeconomic conditions of rural folks, said University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali. He was talking to Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) Chief Scientist Agriculture Research Punjab Dr Sajid ul Rehman and Additional Chief Scientist Wheat and Vegetable Dr Javed Ahmad during his visit to AARI. Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali called for promoting innovation in agriculture through comprehensive practical strategies. He said that the country was blessed with fertile land, four seasons and ecological zones, but per-acre productivity was low compared to the rest of the world. He said collaborative research and development work is essential to address the issues faced by farmers for a sustainable growth. Dr Sajid ul Rehman said that they were making all-out efforts to address the agricultural challenge and ensure the sector on scientific basis. He said that collaborative work between both institutions will bring tangible results in term of varieties and climate resilient agriculture. VC UAF emphasises industry-academia linkages

FAISALABAD: Knowledge of economy and strengthened industry-academia linkages are prerequisite for sustainable economic development and poverty alleviation. For which, a comprehensive strategy is being mapped out to commercialize the research work so that the farming community and general public can benefit. It would also create employment opportunities, said University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali. Chairing a strategic review meeting in ORIC's conference room, joined by Director Research Prof Dr Imran Arshad, Prof. Dr. Zahid Abbas, the Vice Chancellor outlined an ambitious roadmap to enhance operational efficiency and accelerate research commercialization. Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali underscored the pivotal role of the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) as a facilitator and engine for professional advancement at the varsity. He emphasized Director ORIC for strengthening human capital, including new faculty members, to ensure competence in research management, intellectual property rights, patenting, commercialization, and transparent financial workflows. He directed setting up a facilitation desk at ORIC to provide necessary guidance to PIs and ensure completion of all prerequisites. Recalling his position as Director ORIC at Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Multan, he said that due to establishment of facilitation desk there, faculty members were provided with all necessary guidance and facilities. He underscored the need for examining and analyzing at least two models of commercialization from leading international and local universities. He asked ORIC to circulate instructions to the faculty members for inclusion of social scientists as co-principal investigators in all research proposals to enhance societal relevance and impact creation. FAISALABAD: Governor Punjab/Chancellor has appointed Prof Dr Shazia Ramzan, the Chairperson of Department of Islamic Studies as the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. She is the founder dean of the faculty and has assumed the charge. She has profound experience in the academia and research work and author of five books and numerous research papers. Punjab forms task force to boost agri research links

LAHORE: The Punjab government has constituted a task force to enhance coordination between academia and research institutions and to develop a joint strategy aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector. The task force will submit its recommendations within 15 days which will then be forwarded to the Chief Minister of Punjab for approval. Members of the task force will maintain their individual identities while fostering greater collaboration and promoting research. Additionally, coordination with the private sector and international institutions will also be ensured. The formation of the task force was ordered by Secretary Agriculture Punjab, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, during a meeting held at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF). The meeting was attended by UAF Vice Chancellor Zulfiqar Ali, Chairman of the National Seed Authority Dr Asif Ali, Chief Executive of PARB Dr Abid Mahmood, Consultant to the Punjab Agriculture Department Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali, along with agricultural experts and researchers. Addressing the meeting, the secretary of Agriculture emphasised that in order to modernise the agriculture sector all stakeholders must adopt a joint strategy. He noted that stronger coordination between academia and research institutions would yield better outcomes. He added that the government is generously allocating resources to revive the agriculture sector, and a consultative session has already been held with all relevant stakeholders in this regard. He further stressed that practical measures grounded in modern research are essential to boost agricultural productivity. Highlighting cotton production as a major challenge, he underscored the need for a long-term policy. The secretary also pointed out the urgent requirement to introduce superior germplasm, develop new climate-resilient varieties, and ensure the availability of high-quality seeds to farmers. Experts have said that the insects' resistance has intensified due to changing climate pattern and excessive use of pesticides in agriculture, which is posing serious threats to food security. Addressing a National Postgraduate Entomology Research Conference organised by Department of Entomology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) in collaboration with Pakistan Entomological Society and Young Entomologist Society, they urged the entomologists to enhance their role in coping with the situation at the national level.
