Université de Moncton and Dassault Systèmes Partner to Solve Urban Development Challenges in Canada with Virtual Twins

VELIZY-VILLACOUBLAY, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Dassault Systèmes (Euronext Paris: FR0014003TT8, and the Université de Moncton, Canada's largest French-language university outside Québec, today announced the launch of a new project aimed to solve housing, urban densification and ecological conservation challenges in the southeastern region of New Brunswick, Canada. The partnership was signed at VivaTech 2025 in Paris. The six-month project will develop collaborative virtual environments to model, analyze and plan sustainable urban development in the cities of Dieppe and Moncton - two of Canada's fastest growing metropolitan areas in the last 20 years - all while establishing a protected wildlife corridor in the southeastern part of New Brunswick. In addition to the Université de Moncton and Dassault Systèmes, the project brings together several Canadian partners: the cities of Dieppe and Moncton, the Southeast Regional Service Commission, Collège Communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick, and the New Brunswick-based businesses Black Arcs and Remsoft. Dassault Systèmes will use its 3DEXPERIENCE platform to create, maintain and analyze a virtual twin of a zone in New Brunswick measuring approximately 386 miles² (1,000 km²). This virtual twin is enriched with territorial data on buildings, zoning, mobility, biodiversity and more, provided by the partners. Stakeholders will use this virtual twin to share information, test and evaluate different planning scenarios, evaluate the impacts of urban densification, and make informed decisions to optimize housing planning and preserve ecological corridors that are essential to the region's environmental wellbeing. 'Our partnership will enable the Université de Moncton to benefit from a large-scale territory virtual twin that is delivered quickly through a managed solution that reduces costs and risks. Local stakeholders will be able to simulate what-if scenarios, evaluate options and take informed decisions – all on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform – to solve complex real-life challenges and optimize quality of life in the region of New Brunswick,' said Josephine Ong, Vice President, Cities and Public Services Industry, Dassault Systèmes. 'This partnership with Dassault Systèmes positions the Université de Moncton at the forefront of digital innovation applied to urban and environmental issues. We are proud to put our expertise at the service of a project with strong regional and international impact,' said Francis LeBlanc, associate vice-rector for research and dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Université de Moncton. This collaboration was made possible thanks to the support of Opportunities New Brunswick (ONB), which played a key role in fostering the connection between Dassault Systèmes and the Université de Moncton. 'New Brunswick is truly a hub of innovation and collaboration. This partnership demonstrates the strength of the connections between research, industry, and regional development. Together, we are creating solutions that have a real local impact and significant global potential,' said Luke Randall, minister responsible for Opportunities New Brunswick. This project represents an important step forward for urban development in New Brunswick. By combining Dassault Systèmes' technology with local expertise, it will help plan city growth more effectively while protecting the environment. The approach could also serve as a model for other regions in Canada and beyond. ### About Dassault Systèmes Dassault Systèmes is a catalyst for human progress. Study examines rural homelessness in New Brunswick's Acadian Peninsula

While most people picture urban centres like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver when they think of homelessness, rural areas like New Brunswick's Acadian Peninsula are also seeing an increase. Cédric Landry, development director for the Acadian Peninsula Regional Service Commission, says his organization has been made aware of more requests for help and services related to homelessness since 2023. 'That's why we're going ahead with a study with the Université de Moncton in partnership, and trying to make sense of what is homelessness in a rural area like the Acadian Peninsula,' he said in an interview. There are no shelters in the Acadian Peninsula, a large area covering a portion of northeastern New Brunswick. The closest ones are in Miramichi and Bathurst. Plans for a possible out of the cold shelter in Tracadie were met with controversy from community members in the fall of 2024. Longtime resident Claudine Léger, who owns a second-hand clothing store located in the heart of Caraquet, said while she hasn't noticed any homeless individuals, she gets the sense more people are struggling with the rising cost of food and rent. 'It happens that there are people who are less fortunate who want to pay (for clothes) and I don't let them because I know they don't have much money,' she told Global News in French. Story continues below advertisement 'We try to help where we can,' she said. Université de Moncton de Moncton Associate Professor Marie-Pier Rivest, who is one of the study's co-authors, explained rural homelessness was typically more covert as many people resort to couch surfing. 'There's very few studies on homelessness in rural settings,' she said. 'So that's why we're trying to speak with people who have experienced homelessness and people who assist them the best they can despite the lack of services.' Those in need of help can access backpacks full of food, hygiene items and other supplies through a provincially-funded program offered by the Centre de bénévolat de la Péninsule acadienne. Rivest said despite the lack of shelters, many people she and her co-author have spoken to aren't open to relocating to an urban centre in order to access more resources. 'They prefer to stay in their rural setting because they have their social network, they have friends, their family, and sometimes it can be hard for people to leave that area if they're going to lose their social supports.' The preliminary results of the study are expected at the end of the year.

Funeral for Antonine Maillet to be held in Moncton on Saturday

Social Sharing A public funeral for renowned Acadian writer Antonine Maillet will be held in Moncton on Saturday. It will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral on St. George Street. Flags will also be flown at half-mast across all three campuses of the Université de Moncton in her memory. Maillet was born in Bouctouche in 1929 and died at her home in Montreal on Feb. 17 at the age of 95. She received many literary awards in her career, including the Governor General's Award for Don l'Orignal, published in 1968, and the Prix Goncourt in 1979 for her novel Pélagie-la-Charrette, the first Canadian writer to receive the prestigious French literary award. She wrote 12 plays and 20 novels and was called "the greatest voice of Acadia" by New Brunswick Tourism Minister Isabelle Thériault. "In everything — in her books, in her plays, in the music — she wanted Acadie to shine and that's actually what she accomplished … she allowed Acadie to shine throughout Canada and the world," said Thériault, when news of Maillet's death was announced. On the day Maillet's death was announced, Monique Poirier, executive and artistic director of Le Pays de la Sagouine, the theatrical village in Bouctouche, said, "It's a very sad day, but we are so grateful for everything that she has done." The village brings to life the characters Maillet created, including her famous La Sagouine. That play was first staged in 1971 with Viola Leger in the title role Moncton's annual literary festival, the Frye Festival, will honour the late novelist and playwright with a special literary show on May 4, to showcase the depth of her writing. Ariane Savoie, the festival's executive director, previously said Maillet helped inspire the idea to create the festival in 1999. At the time, Maillet was co-organizing a bilingual conference in Moncton with author John Ralston Saul, Savoie said. "That idea of the Frye Festival kind of generated from that event specifically," she said. "Having a bilingual literary conference here in Moncton brought up the fact that Moncton needed these activities." In 2006, the first Maillet-Frye Lecture took place at the Frye and has since become a staple of the festival.
