Cops: Dissatisfaction, interference may have driven artiste to confront Shila Amzah

KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe dissatisfaction and interference in family matters are the motives behind an altercation between singer Shila Amzah and a veteran male artiste at a concert rehearsal here recently. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said police had recorded statements of four individuals, including witnesses at the scene. "The suspect involved has also given his statement to the police. Our investigation indicates the incident stemmed from the suspect's dissatisfaction with the complainant for allegedly interfering in his family matters," he said today. Usuf also confirmed that no additional reports had been lodged in connection with the case, apart from the one filed by the complainant. He said police launched an investigation after Shila Amzah lodged a report on the incident at the Dang Wangi station. Shila Amzah, whose full name is Nurshahila Amir Amzah, claimed that the veteran male artist had confronted and attacked her during a concert rehearsal in Stadium Merdeka. The incident was reported to have occurred around 5.31pm last Thursday. "Police have since opened an investigation paper under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation," Usuf said.

Police boost security ahead of Malaysia Bar protest in Putrajaya

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed receiving an application from the Malaysian Bar to organise a march and peaceful assembly calling for judicial independence, scheduled to take place in Putrajaya this Monday. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the application was submitted to the Putrajaya district police headquarters last Wednesday. "We have met with the organisers and advised them to fully comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012," he said. He added that 105 policemen would be deployed to ensure public safety and order, particularly around the Palace of Justice, the route to the Prime Minister's Office, and surrounding areas. "This is to ensure the event proceeds peacefully and without incident," he said. He also reminded members of the public to adhere to all laws during the gathering. Usuf said the march is expected to draw around 200 participants. Earlier, Malaysian Bar President Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab issued a statement stressing that the march is a legal, peaceful, and symbolic act of civic responsibility. He said it reflects the legal profession's unwavering commitment to upholding the Federal Constitution, the doctrine of separation of powers, and the rule of law. "This is a collective declaration that the independence of the judiciary is non-negotiable and must be protected from any form of external influence, whether political, executive, or otherwise," he said. Ezri stressed that the march is not solely for lawyers but for the judiciary, the Malaysian Bar, and all Malaysians who value justice. "When judicial independence is compromised, the entire nation bears the consequences. "Let there be no misunderstanding. The Malaysian Bar is not marching against any individual. We are marching to defend an institution. "Not for ourselves alone but for the people, whose right to justice must be safeguarded by the courts," he said.

Court slashes jail term for Cambodian who killed 2 women, 2 children

The Federal Court ruled that the initial 60-year sentence was excessive and would have had a crushing effect on Usuf Matli. PUTRAJAYA : A Cambodian man convicted of killing two women and two children, also Cambodian nationals, at a Selangor oil palm plantation a decade ago, has had his prison sentence reduced from 60 years to 40. The Federal Court today allowed Usuf Matli's appeal to reduce the initial jail term imposed by the Court of Appeal last year. Justice Rhodzariah Bujang, who led a three-member bench, said the earlier sentence was excessive. 'The sentence would also have a crushing effect on the appellant,' said Rhodzariah, who sat with Justices Abu Bakar Jais and Hanipah Farikullah. Usuf, 40, will serve the 40-year term from Sept 6, 2015. He was represented by lawyer Salim Bashir while deputy public prosecutor Eu Ghim Siang appeared for the prosecution. Last year, Usuf, a former hawker, pleaded guilty before the Court of Appeal to four counts of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The prosecution accepted his representation, and the death sentence imposed by the Shah Alam High Court in 2023 was set aside. He was then sentenced to 15 years' jail for each offence, with the sentences running consecutively for a total of 60 years. Usuf was accused of killing Salamah Yusof, Fatimas Ali, and children Asnawi Ahmad and Rahimy Yusuf at a Felcra oil palm plantation in Batu 7 Kampung Sijangkang, Telok Panglima Garang in Kuala Langat, Selangor, between 1am and 7.25pm on Sept 6, 2015. Their exact ages could not be verified as they were all Cambodian passport holders. Usuf was the last person seen with them and led the police to their bodies during the investigation.
