Real-time surveillance begins at 2 more STPs in Greater Noida
GREATER NOIDA: The Greater Noida authority has installed Online Continuous Monitoring Systems (OCMS) at two more sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Ecotech-2 and Ecotech-3 for real-time surveillance and better wastewater management and environmental compliance, officials said on Monday. The OCMS technology enables real-time tracking of key pollution parameters like Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and other indicators before and after sewage treatment. 'The system was first introduced at the 2 MLD Badalpur STP, and within a month, has been extended to the 15 million litres per day (MLD) plant in Ecotech-2 and the 20 MLD plant in Ecotech-3,' said additional chief executive officer (ADCEO) Prerna Singh. To be sure, the initiative is part of the Namami Gange programme that mandates online monitoring of all STPs to ensure proper treatment of sewage and discharge of compliant effluent into water bodies. As per the central government's Namami Gange flagship programme that mandates online monitoring of all STPs, Greater Noida authority's chief executive officer NG Ravi Kumar instructed the concerned department to prioritise implementation of OCMS across all STPs in the region, Singh added. The only major STP now left without this system is a 137 MLD capacity plant at Kasna that is expected to be equipped with OCMS within a month, said officials. Meanwhile, the data collected by OCMS will be accessible not only to the authority's sewerage department but also to the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), who can monitor operations remotely from their offices, they said. 'We are working on a plan to equip all STPs with online monitoring systems and Kasna STP is next. The move will help ensure improved operations and quality control,' she added. The system enables up to six users—officials from the authority, contractors, UPPCB, and Namami Gange officials—to access real-time data through laptops or mobile devices. The estimated cost of installing OCMS at each STP is around ₹30 lakh, fully borne by the authority, said senior manager (sewerage department, Greater Noida authority) Vinod Sharma. Beyond compliance, the authority is also exploring the utility of treated water. Currently, the water obtained after treatment is used for irrigation and construction purposes. Officials said that talks are underway between the authority and National Thermal Power Corporation to use this water for thermal power generation as well. Officials said that citizens or contractors interested in using treated water for irrigation or construction can obtain it at a nominal rate of ₹7 per kilolitre by contacting the sewerage department on 9211825118. The initiative comes as part of Greater Noida authority's broader strategy to modernise wastewater treatment infrastructure. The authority is working to transition to advanced technologies to enhance treatment efficiency and meet stricter discharge norms, HT had reported on July 26. The integration of OCMS is viewed as a complementary step towards ensuring transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability in sewage management, officials said.

Green ‘lungs' to breathe fresh air into Lko's pollution hotspots
With a view to combating air pollution, nearly 1.5 lakh saplings will be planted around industrial units, malls, and residential projects across the state capital. These green buffers are intended to function as 'lungs' for the city, especially in high-pollution zones, officials said. According to JP Maurya, regional officer of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), Lucknow, the target for the city is 1,49,000 saplings. These will be planted around 15 major industrial and commercial entities, including factories in the automobile, dairy, pesticide, biomedical, and torch manufacturing sectors, as well as some shopping malls and housing projects. Each entity has been assigned specific plantation targets, and the drive will commence in the first week of July, coinciding with the onset of the monsoon, Maurya said. 'The saplings will be provided free of cost. The forest department is supplying the saplings which we will distribute to the industries. This initiative is part of the state government's broader push to increase green cover,' he added. According to UPPCB data, most of the factories contributing to pollution are located in the rural and semi-urban belts of the city, including areas like Dewa Road, Mohanlalganj, Nadarganj, Sultanpur Road, Bakshi Ka Talab, Bijnor Road, Baghamau, and Kursi Road. Messer Banaskantha Cooperative Milk Union Limited (Amul Milk) on Sultanpur Road has been directed to plant the highest number of saplings (35,000) within its premises. 'We have already started the drive from today (Thursday) on the occasion of World Environment Day. Once we receive the rest of the saplings, we will plant them around the campus,' Dinesh Chaudhary, regional head of the dairy plant in Lucknow, told HT. Likewise, another factory, UP Asbestos Limited in Mohanlalganj, has been given a target of planting 5,000 saplings. 'We are yet to receive the saplings. We plan to plant them around the factory premises,' Sunil Mehta, a representative of the unit, said. 'It is mandatory for these entities to plant trees equivalent to at least 35% of their campus area, or an equivalent number at another designated location. Non-compliance will lead to issuance of notices and further action by UPPCB,' Maurya said, adding each sapling will be geo-tagged to enable tracking and monitoring. Calling it a wonderful initiative, Chetan Bhalla, national vice-president of Indian Industries Association (IIA) said, 'This move will not only increase green cover, but will also help elevate the image of the city when foreign delegates visit these units for business purposes. Like better roads and connectivity to industries, green cover is equally significant. 'IIA promotes plantation drives and apart from the government's initiative, we individually organise such campaigns,' he added.

UP reports 68% improvement in river, reservoir water quality: UPPCB
Lucknow: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) undertook a series of effective measures to enhance the water quality of rivers and reservoirs across the state. As a result, UPPCB's 2024 report reveals 68.8% improvement in water purity across state compared to 2023. "This reflects the success of sustained initiatives, stringent monitoring and special campaigns led by the state govt to combat water pollution," said an official. The UPPCB conducted water quality tests at 176 locations throughout the state in 2024, recording improvements at 120 sites. Under flagship initiatives such as the Namami Gange Mission and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Uttar Pradesh ramped up its capacity for wastewater treatment. As of April 2025, a total of 152 STPs have been installed, of which 141 are fully operational and 126 are in compliance with the prescribed environmental standards. While 6 STPs are currently in the testing phase, 15 are expected to reach full operational capacity shortly. Despite this, challenges persist in certain regions. Between Oct 2022 and Apr 2025, environmental fines totalling ₹11.8 crore were imposed on erring STPs. However, only ₹7.30 lakh has been recovered so far, prompting the board to focus on strengthening the penalty recovery mechanism. The CM has placed special emphasis on the restoration and conservation of major rivers, such as Ganga, Yamuna and Gomti, as well as smaller water bodies.

Protecting environment a shared responsibility of govt, people: CM
1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that protecting environment is not just the govt's responsibility, but a shared duty of the entire society. "The goal to increase the state's green cover to 20% by 2030 will only be successful if tree plantation becomes a people's movement," the CM said while addressing a high-level review meeting of the department of environment, forest and climate change, and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). He directed officials to ensure full preparation, coordination, and public participation for the upcoming plantation drive, scheduled from July 1 to 7. As part of this campaign, the state aims to plant 35 crore saplings in 2025. Yogi directed ministers of both the departments to conduct thorough reviews of pre-plantation preparations and to keep a minimum of 50 crore saplings ready in nurseries. He said that the plantation include a wide variety of species—fruit-bearing, shade-giving, medicinal, and timber trees—to ensure maximum biodiversity . The CM also highlighted the implementation of a comprehensive 'River Rejuvenation Campaign' which will include plantation along both banks of major rivers in the state. "Planned plantations will be undertaken along vacant lands on both sides of expressways — whether under construction, proposed, or operational," he said. He appreciated the concept of the proposed forestry and horticulture university and said that its infrastructure should reflect its core theme. The CM expressed happiness over the fact that out of the 6,327 Gangetic dolphins found in India, 2,397 are in Uttar Pradesh.

22 hotels, banquet halls fined for flouting pollution norms
Ghaziabad: The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has imposed fines worth over Rs 7 crore on 22 hospitality units, including malls, hotels, banquets and restaurants, across the district for violating environmental norms. Of these, three units were permanently shut. In a status report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the pollution board stated that of the 165 units that were inspected, 22 had not obtained consent to operate (CTO) under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981. The petitioners had filed the plea in 2023, and NGT had directed UPPCB to take action if the required environmental consents were not obtained by hospitality units by Dec 2024. A joint committee constituted by the district magistrate has also disconnected electricity and sealed DG sets, the report stated.
