Step up release and ensure Cauvery water reaches tail-end areas in Tiruchi district, farmers urge officials

A cross-section of farmers of Tiruchi on Friday urged the Water Resources Department (WRD) to ensure that Cauvery water reached the tail-end areas in the district. Speaking at the monthly agricultural grievances day meeting, presided over by Collector V. Saravanan, Goundampatti Subramanian, deputy secretary of Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association, said farmers were happy about the timely opening of Mettur dam. Water had been released in most of 17 canals, including Uyyakondan, Peruvalai, Ayyan vaical, Kattalai High Level Canal on the upper reach of the Cauvery from Grand Anicut. It required 4,300 cusecs so that the water reached tail-end areas. Hence, the department should take steps to increase the flow in the canals. Several predominantly agricultural villages such as Ettarai, Koppu, Athavathur, Thayanur in the district faced short supply of water every year due to inefficient distribution mechanism. Considering the comfortable storage in Mettur dam, the authorities should ensure optimum release of water in the canals during the current season. GI tag for banana Ayilai Sivasurian, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, said several areas of Tiruchi and Karur districts, including Musiri, Srirangam, Lalgudi, Thiruverumbur, Krishnarayapuram, and Kulithalai, were known for top quality nendran banana. It had a great demand in Kerala. The nendran banana variety should be given geographical indication (GI) tag. Similarly, elarasi variety of banana, which was being produced in Tiruchi district, had been enjoying high patronage in Karnataka. Hence, the State government should take steps to get GI tag for both nendran and elarasi varieties of banana. The recognition would augur well for the farmers, who raise the banana varieties. There were reports of sale of adulterated seeds and fertilizers in the market. It would have severe impact on the production of agricultural commodities. Hence, the Agricultural Department should take steps to check the sale of adulterated seeds and fertilizers. P. Ayyakannu, president, Desiya Thenninthiya Nadhigal Inaippur Vivasayigal Sangam, said the district administration should take steps to provide 100 days employment to the workers of Kottathur enrolled in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The activities included a rally from the Collector's office to the medical college auditorium, and awareness lectures for students, centred on this year's theme 'Breaking the Chains! The brain is the main generator of all ideas and can be trained to stay balanced. Beyond substance abuse, we are facing a major challenge with addiction to chewing tobacco, electronic devices, and internet overuse,' he said. MGMGH medical superintendent Udhaya Aruna urged the students to stay alert for behavioural changes among their peers and advised them to seek medical attention at the earliest. A. Niranjana Devi, professor, Department of Psychiatry, spoke.

Priority for timely completion of infrastructure projects, says new Tiruchi Collector

Collector V. Saravanan on Wednesday said he would accord priority for timely implementation of ongoing infrastructure projects in Tiruchi and other parts of the district. Speaking to reporters after assuming office as the new Collector of Tiruchi, he said a number of high-stake infrastructural projects had been taken up in the district. Construction of an integrated vegetable market named after social reformist E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) at Panjapur, building of a bridge across the Cauvery in the city, laying of approach roads on Fort Station Road, construction of a library named after former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and Olympic Academy were among the projects. They would be implemented within the prescribed time limit. He would closely monitor their progress and sort out interdepartmental issues, if any. Mr. Saravanan, who held the post of Commissioner of Tiruchi Corporation prior to his appointment as Collector of Tiruchi, said several roads in the city were damaged due to the underground drainage work. Work orders were given for relaying and improving the roads to a length of 107 km. He would use his work as the Commissioner of Tiruchi Corporation for the overall betterment of the city. Priority would be given for the issuance of free house pattas to the poor and implementing the relaxation of rules for regularisation of house sites for those living on the government lands for long. All long-pending issues and unsolved petitions would be sorted out. People could freely approach him and other competent authorities to air their grievances. Mr. Saravanan said special camps would soon be conducted for receiving petitions from the public for availing benefits of various schemes including Mahalir urimaithoragai. To a question on opening the recently inaugurated integrated bus terminus at Panjapur, the Collector said the process of selecting a firm for operation and maintenance of the facility was on and it had reached an advanced stage. Once it was completed, the IBT would be thrown open to the public.
