Mercedes-AMG to Drop Four-Cylinder for Inline-Sixes and V-8s

Mercedes-AMG is preparing to phase out the plug-in hybrid powertrain that uses the M139 2.0-liter inline-four engine. Acknowledging that the four-cylinder "failed to resonate" with customers, the automaker's performance division will move forward with inline-six and V-8 engines. The four-cylinder PHEV setup is currently found in the C63 sedan and the GLC63 crossover, but has faced criticism from fans of the V-8 engines found in previous iterations of these AMG models. Mercedes-AMG is transitioning away from the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain and back towards the inline-six and V-8 powertrains more traditionally associated with the brand. That isn't to say that AMG had a change of heart concerning the merits of the four-cylinder powertrain, but rather that the automaker is responding to customer criticisms. "Technically, the four-cylinder is one of the most advanced drivetrains available in a production car. It's also right up there on performance. But despite this, it failed to resonate with our traditional customers. We've recognized that," a source at Mercedes told Autocar. The report says that the 671-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain will be phased out of the current C63 and GLC63 models, and that the M139 turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine could also be dropped from other AMG models such as the SL43 in favor of an inline-six. We also know that AMG is moving forward with a new-generation V-8 engine, which will be used in 48-volt hybrid and plug-in hybrid applications. C/D also spoke with AMG chief Michael Schiebe at the reveal of the AMG GT XX electric concept car. Although Schiebe would not confirm the demise of the four-cylinder hybrid setup, when asked about this powertrain he said, "we need to cater to the demands of customers." He emphasized a "two pillar" strategy for AMG going forward, including the continuation of combustion engines such as the new V-8 and the new electric platform called that will underpin the production version of the XX concept sports sedan and an electric SUV variant to follow. AMG Hybrids Are Here to Stay Although the four-cylinder may be on its way out, Schiebe did say AMG remains committed to plug-in hybrids. "There are a lot of advantages of combining electric motors with combustion engines," Schiebe said. "We want to offer different kinds of drivetrain opportunities on the combustion side to our customers, so they can choose for whatever purpose they want to use the car." Mercedes-AMG M139 four-cylinder in the AMG C63 S E Performance Much of the criticism of the C63 and GLC63's powertrain was focused on the lackluster sound when compared with the symphony of a V-8. The M139 drew our ire for sounding "reedy" and "buzzy" in our test of the current C63. The C63's hybrid system also brings the car's curb weight up to nearly 5000 pounds, meaning it didn't provide a meaningful performance boost over its V-8 predecessor despite offering significantly more horsepower. Not long after the debut of the C63, which arrived in the U.S. for the 2024 model year, there were murmurs about the V-8 returning to this model as soon as 2026. AMG wouldn't confirm exactly when the four-cylinder will be phased out, telling Autocar that it will remain in production for the time being before "eventually" being replaced. Here's how you can get the Dyson V8 at its lowest recorded price for EOFY

Despite its age, Dyson's V8 cordless vacuum cleaner is still a seriously effective and innovative model. It doesn't boast any dust-spotting optic lights like the Dyson Gen5Detect, but it does provide up to 40 minutes of fade-free power on a full charge, and I think that simple approach is refreshing these days. Better yet, it's now available at the discounted price of AU$799 AU$357 on Amazon, which is pretty great when you consider this version comes with a motorbar cleaner head, combination tool, docking station, hair screw tool, charger and crevice tool. That said, there's a sweeter deal for eBay Plus members! Grab the V8 from the Dyson Australia eBay store and punch in the code PLUSSS for an extra AU$30 off. That brings the price down to an all-time low of AU$327 — AU$2 cheaper than its previous lowest price back in December. If you're not already an eBay Plus member, you can still snag this deal by signing up to the service's 30-day free trial. You even the choice to cancel your subscription at any time, should you choose to do so. It may not be the newest model around, but Dyson's V8 was seen as a game-changing product at the time of its release, and it's still pretty great now. Expect up to 40 minutes of fade-free power from a full charge. Includes motorbar cleaner head, combination tool, docking station, hair screw tool, charger and crevice tool. It's currently discounted to AU$357 on Amazon, however, eBay Plus members who purchase the V8 from the Dyson Australia eBay store can score an additional AU$30 off when they use the code PLUSSS, bringing the V8 down to its all-time low price of AU$327. Now that's a banger of a deal! Alternatively, those who'd prefer a newer model could opt for the Dyson V10 Absolute, which you can currently score at an epic AU$750 discount on the Dyson eBay store when you use the same PLUSSS code at checkout. That brings its price down to just AU$1,299 AU$549! If you're looking for additional power and longer suction time, the Dyson V10 Absolute might be a better choice for you than the aforementioned V8. It boasts smart attachments, and lasts up to 60 minutes depending on which tools you use. Currently discounted to AU$599 on Dyson's eBay store, though eBay Plus members can get an additional AU$50 off by using the coupon code PLUSSS at checkout.

With 1,625 HP, Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear Honors Actual Horse Power

The Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear is a limited-production, track-focused machine that rounds out the Jesko portfolio. Koenigsegg is limiting production of the Sadair's Spear to 30 examples. The V8 in the Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear makes 1,300 hp on pump gas or 1,625 hp on E85. If Koenigsegg's Jesko wasn't rare enough, the company is rolling out an even more exclusive machine that is looking squarely at the racetrack. The Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear borrows its name from Jesko Von Koenigsegg's final racehorse and lives up to the horse's spirit. This track monster cranks up the power from the Jesko's V8, adds a big wing, and gets a new interior. Powering the Sadir's Spear is basically the same V8 powertrain as you'd find in the Jesko. The 5.0-liter turbocharged V8 gets some extra cooling, and a revised air intake helps push power output to new heights. On high-octane pump gas, the Sadair's Spear pushes 1,300 hp through the Koenigsegg nine-speed Light Speed transmission. If you switch to E85, that power creeps up to a jaw-dropping 1,625 hp. That extra cooling is paramount for keeping the Sadair's Spear happy on the track. According to Koenigsegg, there's an extra heat exchanger for the engine oil to better manage extreme temperatures. There's also a bigger opening in the hood and new intake scoops at the rear. The company says overall cooling is up by 30%. The aero package is ready for the track, too. At the front, there are some dive planes to help guide the air, and longer underfloor strakes route air underneath the car. And check out the massive wing. All in, the company estimates there's roughly 20% more downforce over the Jesko. Koenigsegg reworked the brakes and suspension so this equine-inspired track machine can manage the added downforce and be more track-capable than the Jesko. The suspension sports lightweight springs and Koenigsegg's signature Triplex dampers. Braking improvements come from enhanced carbon-ceramic rotors with upgraded pad material. If you were expecting an opulent, Bugatti-esque interior, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The cabin now sports a pair of racing seats and six-point harnesses. Koenigsegg also shaved some weight out of the Sadair's Spear by removing sound insulation. While this cabin isn't as Spartan as a real race car, it's probably not going to be as comfortable as a Jesko. Considering the limited production, it's no surprise the Sadair's Spear sold out almost immediately. If you had over $5 million sitting in a bank account, you might have missed your chance to own one of these special Koenigsegg cars. What do you think is next from Koenigsegg? Tell us your thoughts below.

Please, No: The Lexus LC500 and Its V8 Might Not Have Much Time Left

The latest car news, reviews, and features. I don't know of a car that's more universally loved than the Lexus LC500. It's drop-dead gorgeous, it drives great, and its 5.0-liter V8 sounds even better. Sure, it's kind of old at this point, but that doesn't mean it needs to die. Japanese outlet Creative Trend reports that's about to happen, though, and as a praying man, I'm asking that it might stick around a while longer. Creative Trend claims that the LC500 will bow out after the 2026 model year, joining the similarly V8-powered IS500. The two-door is only getting a small list of updates before it supposedly goes away, though a limited run of 200 Pinnacle Edition cars is said to be in the works. These special LC500s will be sold to customers who enter and win a lottery pick, with 50 convertibles and 50 coupes going to two groups: Lexus Owners and General. Deliveries of the LC500 Pinnacle Edition will allegedly start at the end of 2025 for current Lexus owners and early 2026 for members of the general public. Creative Trend writes that all coupes will be painted matte silver while the convertibles are going to be coated in Neutrino gray, which we saw just recently on the IS500 Climax Edition. (Yes, that's really what it's called.) Other upgrades include the Mark Levison premium audio setup, 21-inch forged aluminum wheels, a carbon fiber scuff plate, and a carbon fiber rear spoiler, among others. I've reached out to Lexus for comment on whether or not this might actually be the LC500's last dance. I'll be sure to update this story with the company's response if it provides one. The LC500's updated interior is sweet and comes with some neat color combos. Caleb Jacobs I tested an LC500 convertible just a while back after trying to get behind the wheel of one for literal years. It was everything I'd hoped for and more. The review isn't out just yet—gotta get on that—but I can tell you that the car world is a better place with the LC500 in it. I'm genuinely wishing for it to stay put, but only if it can remain in its current V8 form. There's no point in watering it down with anything less than that grunting, naturally aspirated lump that makes you smile with every shift. And before you ask, no, I don't acknowledge the existence of the V6 hybrid LC500h. Got a tip or question for the author? Contact them directly: caleb@
