VDE Americas Verifies Successful Operation of GameChange Solar's Genius Tracker™ HailStow™

Demonstrating the importance of testing hail defense systems to protect solar farms globally NORWALK, Conn. and SAN JOSE, Calif., July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- GameChange Solar (GCS) and VDE Americas, a global leader in technical advisory and catastrophic risk assessment services for the solar power industry, released a study on the use of GameChange Solar Genius Tracker'sTM hail mitigation function. In the study "HailStowTM Performance in April 2025," VDE evaluated the operation of GameChange Solar's hail stow for a utility-scale solar facility in hail-prone Arkansas. The purpose of the study was to confirm the performance of GameChange Solar's hail mitigation system, which can be installed to protect solar assets from catastrophic hail damage. For the study, VDE reviewed operational data during six storms that passed near the study site over a three-day period and met the criteria to trigger a hail stow. In all cases, the system successfully went to the desired steep stow angle, where solar panels are tilted to deflect direct hail impact. In the report, VDE notes, "For this study period, the HailStow™ system worked as designed, including processing hail warnings, issuing activation emails, and moving the trackers to hail stow position." Hail mitigation has been a genuine concern for owners and insurers of solar power plants throughout the United States and other hail-prone locations. As one of the top three global manufacturers of solar trackers, GameChange Solar has worked closely with VDE to develop a rigorously tested hail mitigation system, delivering advanced protection that helps safeguard assets, reduce risk, and support long-term performance. "With hailstorms across the globe intensifying, it is critical to install hail mitigation systems – like GameChange's Solar Genius Tracker™ HailStow™ – which are effective in reducing solar panel damage due to hail," said Jon Previtali, VP and Senior Principal Engineer at VDE Americas. "In our role to protect and extend the economic value of solar assets, we continue to advocate for advanced weather alert services, proactive hail stow implementation and frequent testing of hail stow systems." "This successful validation by VDE is the result of a strong engineering partnership and a shared commitment to rigorous, real-world validation," said Scott Van Pelt, Chief Engineer at GameChange Solar. "We developed the Genius Tracker™ HailStow™ to provide a fast, reliable response that helps protect solar infrastructure from catastrophic hail damage. By working closely with VDE, we ensure that our systems provide top tier hail protection, long-term asset reliability, and insurability in hail-prone regions." VDE Americas and kWh Analytics Join Forces to Optimize Insurance Premiums for Solar Assets Designed for Hail Resiliency

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 17, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--VDE Americas, a global leader in technical advisory and catastrophic risk assessment services for the solar power industry, and kWh Analytics, a leading Climate Insurance provider that differentiates premiums based on renewable energy asset resiliency, have jointly launched a new assessment form that evaluates solar site hail vulnerability and protective measures. The launch coincides with the beginning of North America's hail season, which spans from April through September, giving solar developers and operators a timely resource to safeguard their assets during these high-risk months. Multiple, high-profile hail losses have caused insurance challenges for solar assets, fueling the industry to adopt resilience measures, such as deploying thicker glass solar panels that are less prone to cracking. However, for insurance carriers to effectively assess risk mitigation, they need data. To provide meaningful hail risk evaluation data, VDE Americas and kWh Analytics have jointly developed the Hail Stow and Risk Evaluation form. This easy-to-use assessment allows insurance underwriters and financiers to confirm and monitor hail defense functionality. The form also provides an option for insurers to connect with tracker manufacturers and independent engineers directly for project specifics. Ultimately, projects that use this form and demonstrate the effectiveness of their resiliency efforts should receive insurance credits for doing so. The form and recommendations are informed by VDE's comprehensive best practices for hail defense, which include proactive solar panel stowing—tilting solar panels at extreme angles to minimize hail impact damage—sector-specific hail forecasting, and alert-based hail stow. kWh Analytics' and VDE Americas' approach to risk modeling leverages radar-based weather data and equipment-specific hail resiliency characteristics to create a data-driven model that rewards resilient design and operational excellence. By incorporating reliable, site-specific hail risk data and equipment performance metrics, this approach creates a more precise risk assessment framework that benefits proactive solar owners and operators. "Our evidence-based premium differentiation rewards projects with proven hail defense strategies, sending an insurance price signal to the industry and incentivizing the design, construction, and operation of more resilient solar assets," said Nicole Thompson, Senior Manager of Data Science at kWh Analytics. The form works alongside VDE Americas' Hail Risk Intelligence suite to address solar projects' vulnerabilities to hail. The evaluation provides insurers with standardized criteria to assess hail readiness, while the Intelligence suite equips operators with practical tools—including hail risk engineering reports, a Hail Risk Atlas with ArcGIS mapping, technical guidance for stow procedures, and forensic analysis capabilities. Together, these resources help solar projects both strengthen their resilience against hail damage and demonstrate resilience to insurers. "Safeguarding energy assets against severe weather risk is critical to maintaining grid stability across the United States," said Brian Grenko, CEO and President of VDE Americas. "This collaboration transforms how the industry approaches hail risk by establishing clear, actionable guidelines for resilient design and operations, plus an incentive to demonstrate hail defenses are in place and working as expected."
