Tiruchy church discrimination row: Bishop skips car procession
Speaking to TNIE, Collector V Saravanan said, 'We have constituted a peace committee to address the issue. The RDO will conduct an inquiry. The existing laws are clear.' However, when revenue officials tried to hold a mediation meeting locally, Dalit representatives insisted that either the Bishop or a senior diocesan official must be present. 'This is not simply Dalits versus non-Dalits issue. The church administration is part of the discrimination,' said J Doss Prakash, a Dalit Christian parishioner. 'The festival committee is entirely controlled by non-Dalits. We are denied basic rights like paying subscription or take part in the planning. Even after decades, not even a small chariot enters our streets.' he added. Adding weight to the protest, Bishop Jeevanandam Amalanathan boycotted the procession, citing the ongoing caste tensions and the diocese's alleged inability to resolve the matter. A peace meeting involving stakeholders is expected to be arranged later this week.

Pvt long-distance buses to shift from Central bus stand as IBT goes live
Trichy: Ahead of the full-fledged operation of the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur from Wednesday, the Trichy district administration has directed private long-distance buses to Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad to shift their operations from the Central bus stand to the new facility. The move is aimed at fully operationalising the Rs 246.1-crore terminus. Initially, 42 shops will open for business, with more to follow in phases. Currently, about 100 private buses use VOC Road, Williams Road, and Major Saravanan Road near the Central bus stand for passenger pick-up and drop-off. District collector V Saravanan said these buses will now operate from a designated area near the IBT, with support from the city police. To maintain cleanliness, 228 workers will be deployed to clean the IBT hourly. Trichy city police will station 52 personnel on rotation, and the Corporation will establish a temporary police outpost within the terminus. Additional facilities include a health desk, 30 volunteers to assist passengers, and buggy services for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Except for services to western districts such as Karur, Tiruppur, Erode, and Coimbatore, all mofussil buses will bypass the Central bus stand. Western-bound buses will start from IBT but continue via Central and Chathiram bus stands. Services to northern, southern, and delta districts will use national highways, avoiding the congested city centre. City bus services will also be extended to IBT, with operations beginning at 3 am instead of the current 5 am. Buses entering IBT will use the rear entrance; those exiting will take the front gates and join Trichy-Madurai NH via U-turns to continue their journeys. "Private buses occupying major roads near the Central bus stand should be directed to Panjapur to ease congestion," said V Nadaraja, a Cantonment resident. Officials said shifting buses to IBT will help decongest the overcrowded Central bus stand.
