Japanese restaurant Umi Nami to shutter, in yet another F&B business closure at Holland Village, Lifestyle News
Another one bites the dust at Holland Village as Japanese restaurant Umi Nami announced its impending closure in an Instagram post on Monday (July 28). In the post, the restaurant thanked customers for their support and stated that its menu and operating hours may change as it prepares for closure, and more updates will be available on the establishment's Instagram and TikTok pages. "Thank you for being part of our story. We hope to see you one last time before we close," the announcement wrote. Umi Nami was started in 2017 by 44-year-old Valerie Tang and her ex-husband, who is currently running Ryo Sushi at Orchid Hotel. Speaking with AsiaOne, Valerie attributed the closure to rental costs, declining footfall, increased competition from nearby establishments like One Holland V and the economic downturn. Valerie added that the final day of operations will be at the end of September, or possibly earlier if the landlord manages to find a new tenant. The decision to shutter was made three months ago, and she plans on taking a break, spending more time with her children and going back to school. The news comes after two F&B icons in the neighbourhood had announced their closure this year. Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao, which had been running at Holland Village for two decades, closed down on June 30 after their lease expired. A spokesperson had told AsiaOne that they were evaluating opportunities for new outlets in other areas of Singapore as part of their ongoing business strategy. Wala Wala Cafe Bar, which has been in Holland Village since 1993, had also announced that they would be concluding their business by the end of the year after their lease is up, with end-August being the earliest possible date for their last day of operations. After the closure announcement, Umi Nami also reposted a reel from F&B consultant and growth strategist Khoo Keat Hwee, who's also the former owner of the now-shuttered Japanese eatery chain Mentai-Ya as he lamented the difficulties that F&B businesses in Singapore face such as high rent and low footfall. On these recent closures in Holland Village, Valerie said: "There are big boys who can survive but small ones like ours are hard to pivot due to increasing costs." F&B businesses aren't the only ones pulling out of the neighbourhood. Some other long-standing tenants have also shuttered their businesses in recent years, such as the iconic Thambi Magazine Store in May 2024 after 80 years and family-run furniture store Lim's Holland Village in November 2024 after 50 years. Their departures have sparked conversations regarding lost heritage and whether Holland Village is losing its lustre. [[nid:719040]]

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A drunk woman picked up and took home a seagull – only to find out later that it had bird flu. Erin Punton had been on a night out with friends and was returning home when she spotted the bird outside a pub. Inebriated, the 22-year-old from Ashington, Northumberland, scooped up the seagull and carried it home. An intoxicated Erin had filmed herself with the seagull tucked under her arm while singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse. In the clip, she said: 'He's a beauty. 'He actually wants to stop in my room and everything but I've got nowhere for him.' The giant seagull appeared unfazed by the sudden attention as it was carried around like royalty. She woke up the next morning with no recollection of the night before and was shocked to find the bird flapping about in her living room. After taking the seagull to the vet, she 'felt sick' when they told her it had bird flu. She promptly bleached her entire home after finding out the bird was infected. Bird flu, or avian flu, is an infectious type of influenza that spreads among birds. It can affect humans in rare cases, by being transmitted through touching infected birds, bedding and preparing or eating sick poultry. Avian flu symptoms in humans include a very high temperature or feeling hot or shivery, aching muscles and headaches. The last case of confirmed bird flu was confirmed in captive birds at a premises near Tow Law, Bishop Auckland in County Durham. Erin said: 'I saw the bird outside Wetherspoons and managed to pick him up without even a thought. More Trending 'I don't even know what made me pick him up. 'I put him in my sitting room with a blanket. When I woke up in the morning, I'd forgotten and he was just floating around the sitting room. 'I dropped him off at the vets the next day in a box and was told he had bird flu. 'I felt sick and bleached my whole house.' Dressed in a pink top and a leather jacket, she can be seen shaking her hair out of her face while continuing to clutch onto the seagull. Amy Winehouse's parents unite for sombre occasion as fans pay tribute to 'forever icon'
Amy Winehouse's parents Janis Winehouse and Mitch Winehouse paid their respects to the late BRIT Award winner earlier this week on the 14th anniversary of her death The late Amy Winehouse 's parents Janis Winehouse and Mitch Winehouse reunited recently to pay their respects to the singer-songwriter. The former couple were together for the 14th anniversary of her death earlier this week. It's now been more than a decade since legendary singer Amy, who rose to fame in the mid 2000s, died, aged 27, back in 2011. In the years since her death, which has been attributed to accidental alcohol poisoning, she has been the subject of numerous tributes, including on the anniversary, which falls on July 23. Janis, 70, and Mitch, 74, looked sombre as they paid their respects at Amy's grave at Edgwarebury Cemetery in London on the anniversary this year. They were joined by loved ones and fans at the graveside on Wednesday. Amy's parents, who were both seen with walking aids, marked the anniversary with those in attendance. Flowers were left for the late BRIT Award winner, who is buried with her paternal grandmother Cynthia Levy, who died in 2006. Janis and Mitch, who divorced in 1993, are said to have remained close following their daughter's death. In the wake of their loss, they set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which aims to "inspire children and young people to build their self-esteem and resilience," in her memory in 2011. The anniversary of her death was also marked in a post on the official account for Amy on Instagram this week. A tribute was issued to the acclaimed artist alongside a photo of her sat by a window with light shining through it. A caption on the post read: "Remembering our Amy today. A voice and a soul that left us far too soon and lives on through all who love her. 14 September 1983 ~ 23 July 2011." The message yesterday concluded with a black heart emoji. The post has more than 200,000 likes on the platform now. It was also shared on X, where fans reacted with tributes to the singer, whose career included releasing songs like Back to Black and her iconic cover of The Zutons' Valerie. One fan wrote yesterday: "This is a beautiful picture of Amy! May she always be remembered." Whilst another person said: "Left us far soon what a voice what a talent & what a collection of songs she left behind for us to still enjoy." Someone else described Amy as a "forever icon". Another fan commented on the anniversary: "Loved her. She had her own style and unbelievable talent. Definitely gone too soon." One person shared in a post: "Forever missing her." And sharing their thoughts, another fan wrote recently: "Legends never die; though their bodies may lay in the dust, their spirits, stories, and songs live on. I've been listening to Back to Back on repeat while simultaneously mourning and celebrating her life and death. Amy's voice lives on."
