Early work for construction of pedestrian bridge over parkway in Erie to begin
Preliminary work needed to build a pedestrian bridge over the Bayfront Parkway begins June 23. A portion of East Front Street will be closed near Holland Street for about four weeks while utilities are relocated. Utilities will be moved underground in preparation for construction of the pedestrian bridge next year. Also scheduled for construction next year is a second dual-lane roundabout on the parkway, also at Holland Street. Improvements to the central stretch of the Bayfront Parkway began in fall 2023 near Sassafras Street Extension. A dual-lane roundabout at the intersection was built last year. Construction this season will be focused at State Street. The street will become a bridge over the parkway. Major work at Holland Street is expected to begin in earnest next year. The curved pedestrian bridge will connect the bluff south of the parkway with Erie's bayfront. The dual-lane roundabout will be similar to the roundabout built at Sassafras Street. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has proposed closing the Bayfront Parkway between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street for about a year, beginning after Labor Day. The closing would speed construction of the grade-separated State Street intersection and save an estimated $8 million in construction costs, transportation officials said. To come from PennDOT Decision on whether central Bayfront Parkway will close for a time No decision has yet been made. Plans for each of the intersections included in the central Bayfront Parkway project are available online at Contact Valerie Myers at vmyer@ This article originally appeared on Erie Times-News: First steps to construct Holland St. bridge over parkway begin June 23

State Street in Erie to close from Second Street to Bayfront Parkway. Here's what to know
State Street will be closed between Second Street and the Bayfront Parkway beginning July 21. The road is expected to be closed for a few months. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be detoured, and temporary traffic signals will be installed along the route. Pedestrians will be able to use State Street during the Tall Ships Erie Festival. And the City of Erie is making some traffic changes and prohibiting parking on some streets to help prevent congestion due to the planned State Street closing. Drivers traveling between the bayfront and downtown will be detoured onto Holland Street, East Third Street and the Bayfront Parkway. Vehicles will be able to access the waterfront side of the parkway using Holland and East Front and Sassafras street and West Front street extensions. Pedestrians will be routed along West Third Street, Holland Street and East Front Street. Walkways will be provided along State Street from Aug. 21-24 to accommodate foot traffic to and from Tall Ships Erie. Temporary traffic lights and push-button pedestrian signals will be installed on East Third Street at Holland and French streets. The pedestrian push-button system already in place at Holland Street and the parkway will be updated to include audible messages. The signals will remain in place through continued construction on the parkway. Because the portion of lower State Street will close and "in the interest of community access, public safety and response times," the City of Erie will implement detours and parking restrictions beginning July 14. Sassafras Street Extension will be closed to all but emergency vehicles from the parkway south to the bluff. West Third Street between Peach and Sassafras streets will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic, with parking prohibited on both sides of the street. Parking additionally will be prohibited on: West Second Street from Peach to Sassafras; East 3rd Street from French Street to Holland Street; Holland Street from East Third Street to East Sixth Street. The two blocks of lower State Street will be closed while drainage pipes are installed under the Bayfront Parkway. State Street will become a bridge over the parkway when construction at the intersection is completed. Completed and planned improvements along the downtown portion of the parkway also include roundabouts at Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street and a pedestrian bridge at Holland Street. PennWest offering more low-cost courses to high school students. How much do credits cost?
More high school students will be able to enroll in more Pennsylvania Western University courses thanks to a nearly $1 million grant to the university. The $999,931 from the state's Dual Credit Innovation Grant Program will allow PennWest to expand dual enrollment opportunities for Pennsylvania high school students. The dual enrollment program allows students to earn college credits at reduced cost while still in high school. PennWest currently offers nearly 100 dual enrollment courses taught by university faculty. Topics range from business, computer programming and public speaking to drawing, ocean science and professional golf management. The new grant will allow PennWest to offer more dual enrollment courses, especially high demand courses aligned with workforce needs. Courses can be taken online or on PennWest campuses, including PennWest Edinboro, during fall, spring and summer terms. And courses also may count toward high school graduation requirements. High school students with grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher are eligible for dual enrollment. Cost is $75 per credit, compared to $322 per credit for PennWest University students. The Dual Credit Innovation Grant additionally will allow the university to enroll more dual enrollment students; broaden student support services, including advising and streamlining the credit-transfer process; and partner with other organizations to eliminate student credit costs. PennWest reduced the cost for dual enrollment and expanded course offerings last year. Participation has since surged by 66%.
