ARIA makes changes to singles and albums chart in bid to platform Australian music

Zero Australian artists have made the top 50 singles chart this week, while just five locals feature in the equivalent albums chart. However, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has announced sweeping changes to their charts in order to give Aussies a better chance at reaching the pointy end. From September, the ARIA Top 50 Singles and Albums charts, as well as the Top 20 Australian Artist Singles and Albums charts, will focus exclusively on music released within the past two years. Under the revisions, perennial hits such as The Killers' unkillable Mr. Brightside, which has spent 157 weeks in the top 50, and Vance Joy's Hottest 100-topping Riptide, a whopping 360 weeks in the Australian top 20, will make room for newer music and move to a new chart called ARIA On Replay. Formerly known as the Catalogue chart, On Replay will also showcase titles that have historically taken up near-permanent residence in the main charts. That includes multiple older Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran records, country stars Luke Combs and Zach Bryan, and classic Fleetwood Mac album Rumours, which has spent 403 weeks in the Top 50 Albums. Greatest hits compilations will also transition away from the main charts: everyone from Eminem (402 weeks) and Elton John (336 weeks) to Maroon 5 (321 weeks), Katy Perry (289 weeks) and The Weeknd (228 weeks). The two-year cut-off is being implemented to "make the charts more dynamic", ARIA chief executive Annabelle Herd told ABC Radio Melbourne. She says the current chart calculations "[don't] really reflect what people are listening to in terms of new music… [these changes] will clear up a lot of space not just for new Australian music but new music generally". The move comes after 12 months of "modelling and consideration" in consultation with the local industry in a bid to remove barriers for Australian music, which has struggled to compete against legacy releases and big-name overseas names popular on streaming platforms. It is the biggest change to the charts since ARIA began counting streaming figures towards singles (in 2014) and albums (in 2017), measuring them in combination with downloads and sales of physical formats including vinyl and CDs. The two-year cut-off rule, which is similar to those in place for France and New Zealand, hopes to renew interest in homegrown talent and address a plummeting local presence on the ARIA charts in recent years. The changes seek to improve "discoverability" of Australian music, which is being overshadowed in a crowded global marketplace. "Our aim is to support the discovery and celebration of great Australian music at every stage of its life," Herd added in a statement. Only six Australians appeared across ARIA's 2024 end-of-year singles and album charts: Vance Joy, The Kid LAROI, DJ and producers Dom Dolla and Cyril, and compilations from Cold Chisel and INXS. So far this year, there has not been a single Australian to reach the number one spot on the singles chart, while homegrown acts topping the albums chart is a rarity. The debut solo album from Calum Hood of pop rockers 5 Seconds of Summer is currently at number one. The only other Australian albums to reach the top spot so far in 2025 are Jimmy Barnes's latest solo effort Defiant, Brisbane mainstays Ball Park Music's Like Love, and hip hop trio Bliss N Eso's The Moon (The Light Side). Meanwhile, Western Sydney drill crew Onefour are sitting at number two with their debut album Look At Me Now. They follow Spacey Jane stalling at number two after their third album, If That Makes Sense, was kept from pole position by enigmatic UK metal act Sleep Token. The chart success of classics has often come at the expense of new music cutting through, but ARIA is introducing an exemption to recognise older songs that experience a Zeitgeist cultural moment. This week, Black Eyed Peas re-entered the Top 50 Singles chart with Rock That Body, 15 years after its initial release, thanks to the track going viral on TikTok. It follows in the footsteps of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill getting a Stranger Things revival and Fleetwood Mac's Dreams getting signal-boosted by a skateboarding cranberry-juice-drinker. A special provision will allow other decades-old songs enjoying similar contemporary appeal to re-enter ARIA's Singles and Albums chart, as long as they meet a few criteria. Namely, titles can not have appeared in the top 100 for at least 10 years, and eligible music will only be considered upon request from record labels, demonstrating "sufficient activity" for placement in the top 30 or higher. Additionally, eligible titles will only remain in the Singles and Albums charts for up to 10 weeks. Lastly, the changes take effect after the 2025 ARIA Awards eligibility period, so this year's nominees will not be affected.

ARIA charts to boot old hits from top 40

Don't miss out on the headlines from Music. Followed categories will be added to My News. The old hits you love by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Fleetwood Mac and more will be booted off the top 50 in the biggest shake-up of the ARIA charts in the streaming era. In an attempt to flush more new music into the top 50 albums and singles, and the top 20 Australian Artist leaderboards, ARIA will unveil dramatically new-look charts in September. Under the revised criteria, those four charts will only feature music released within the last two years. So bye bye to all the Taylor Swift records except The Tortured Poets Department, Sheeran's Divide and Fleetwood Mac's 1977 classic Rumours, which has been rusted onto the top 50 for 403 weeks. Those country hits by Luke Combs and Zach Byran which have hung around for years will also get punted from the main charts. The Killers classic hit Mr Brightside will find a new chart home after 20 years. Picture: Tony Gough All the greatest hits compilations that have been on the charts consistently since their release forever will disappear, including Eminem's Curtain Call (402 weeks) and Elton John's Diamonds (336 weeks). The Australian Artist top 20 singles would look wildly different if the changes came in this week, with 13 songs given the boot including Vance Joy's unrelenting Riptide which has spent 360 weeks on the chart. The old stuff will now migrate to new charts called ARIA On Replay. ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said the changes are an attempt to remove barriers to new music from Australian and international artists busting into the top 50 or the top 20 local artist charts. Vance Joy's Riptide will finally retire from the main charts after a decade. Picture: Jonathan Ng She said it meant the freshest tunes and records will no longer have to compete with all the music ever made which is readily available on demand via streaming. 'What are you gonna do when you're competing with all of the world's best music ever released, as people have said you're competing with the Beatles or Coldplay or whoever, and it just means that the chart stays pretty stagnant, week to week,' she said. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY The Australian music industry has been struggling to reignite the appetite for homegrown music as reflected by the lack of local releases on the ARIA charts, which measure music consumption via streaming, downloads and sales of physical formats including vinyl and CD. The 2024 end of year charts featured only five Aussie singles including Riptide and three albums with The Kid Laroi's The First Time the only new studio record. Herd said ARIA spent a year reviewing the charts before introducing the two-year cut-off criteria; similar rules exist in France and New Zealand. Fleetwood Mac's rusted-on Rumours album will migrate to ARIA On Replay chart. Picture:. 'We are working on getting more Australians listening to Australian music. Everybody around the world is listening to Australian music in huge numbers which is fantastic, and I'm very confident that is going to translate into more Australians listening to local music,' she said. 'I think as soon as the change is made you'll see more Australian artists in those charts.' There is one exception for classic hits making the top 50 if they enjoy a viral moment, such as Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill returning to No.1 after it featured on a pivotal episode of Stranger Things in 2022. Black Eyed Peas returned to the top 50 this week with their 2010 song Rock That Body which soundtracks a viral dance trend. Trending vintage songs and albums will make the cut for 10 weeks only, if the title has not appeared in the Top 100 for at least ten years. The Top 50 staying power of Ed Sheeran's Divide album will soon be over. Award-winning Leopold home on Lake Connewarre notches big sale

An award-winning lakefront home that's played host to a string of well-known Aussie musicians has notched up one of Leopold's biggest sales. A buyer already living on the Bellarine Peninsula has bought the secluded four-bedroom house, designed by acclaimed architect Kerstin Thompson, after a seven-month campaign. Bellarine Property, Barwon Heads agent Levi Turner said he was unable to disclose the sale price of the 4.86ha property at 15 Maloneys Rd, Leopold. It was originally listed with a $5.75m price guide, which was slashed to $4.75m to $4.95m in February. At this price, it would be Leopold's most expensive home. Megan Washington, Vance Joy, Tim Rogers and the late Kinky Friedman are among musicians who have played in the home's on-site recording studio. The property on the shores of Lake Connewarre also features a pool, a sports oval/heli pad, an olive grove, fruit trees and three outdoor baths on a raised deck. Mr Turner said it ranked among the top 10 homes he had sold on the Bellarine Peninsula in 12 years of real estate. 'It was a couple of things – the views are amazing and the privacy. It's so tucked away but you are 15 minutes to get into Geelong,' he said. 'And the house won architectural awards. 'The buyers are going to do some internal cosmetic renovations to make it their own but from the outside, from an architectural point of view, you could still build it today. It was really cool.' The 22-year-old home received both the 2005 Victorian Coastal Award for Building and Building Design and the 2003 Australian Institute of Architects' Victorian Chapter Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award, which recognises each year's best residential project. Its long, black structure is designed to blend into the environment and features a folded roof that mimics the shape of an origami black swan. The residence is divided into three pavilions, including the main three-bedroom house, a guest apartment with recording studio and a garage/carport for five vehicles. Mr Turner said there was a solid response from the market throughout the campaign. 'You get these amazing properties on the Bellarine and the Surf Coast and Geelong and you think 'everyone is going to love it' and people do but to actually buy it, one, they've got to have the money and two, be in a position to buy and they are few and far between,' he said. The vendor was a self-confessed cricket tragic who incorporated an oval into extensive gardens by landscape architect Tim Nicholas. Paths wind through the property to Lake Connewarre where a raised deck provides storage for watercraft.

Dua Lipa surprises fans as she covers pop classic 99 Luftballoons in ‘perfect' German

Dua Lipa proved that her infamous holidaying has paid off after she pulled off an impressive live stunt for her German fans during one of her latest shows. For every one of the stops on her Radical Optimism Tour, Lipa has been performing a cover of a song tied to that location, with her covering tracks from the likes of Enrique Iglesias and Daft Punk. When she was wowing crowds in Australia she performed a whole host of pop classics from Aussie faves like Kylie Minogue and INXS. But she looking like she'd even impressed herself after coming to the end of her latest cover, a pitch-perfect cover of German pop banger 99 Luftballoons. Videos of the moment have since gone viral on TikTok, with fans sharing their surprise at how well Lipa sung in German. 'I'm German and there wasn't a single pronunciation mistake,' remarked on fan on one of the viral TikTok videos of the moment from Lipa's sellout show. 'The German version is the best version, Dua Lipa knows!' commented a second, with another adding: 'No but that's actually so impressive'. Lipa celebrated the end of her eight-show sold out run in Australia last month with a laid back relax at Coogee Beach. She made sure to find the time to enjoy the sights having been spotted days earlier at Tamarama Beach, and also at Taronga Zoo. Her shows Down Under proved to be a major success for the singer, who made sure to invite some of her showbiz pals up on stage with her to entertain the crowds, including Troye Sivan and Vance Joy. Sadly for fans, Lipa's hunky Hollywood actor boyfriend, Callum Masters, was nowhere to be seen while she dazzled fans. Instead, she has brought her younger brother Gijin along for the trip. Lipa and Turner were first linked in January last year after the Houdini singer attended the premiere of the Apple TV+ show Masters of Air, in which Turner starred alongside Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan.
