Vancouver Rise FC hands AFC Toronto second straight NSL loss
BURNABY – Samantha Chang's two first-half goals was all Vancouver Rise FC needed in defeating AFC Toronto 2-1 on Thursday in Northern Super League action. Chang scored in the 19th and 35th minutes to tie the game, then put Vancouver (5-5-3) ahead in the contest. Kaylee Hunter opened the scoring, putting Toronto (8-5-1) on the board just nine minutes into the game. Toronto, which sits atop the NSL standings, has now lost two in a row on the heels of a five-game winning streak. A gruelling 90-minute battle in the intense prairie heat won't keep the Calgary Wild FC from celebrating a much-needed 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Rise FC at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth Saturday evening. Article content Alberta's first women's professional sports team will be two-stepping into the final weekend of the Calgary Stampede with their Wild Rose supporters, thanks to two first-half tallies at McMahon Stadium that ended a two-game slide in the Northern Super League. Ever since that first game against Vancouver we always felt like we could have come away from games with something,' said Wild FC head coach Lydia Bedford. 'That was no different when we got the draw against them six weeks ago, but it means more today because of the last run of games and what we've been managing as a group.' Article content Article content A banged-up bench reminiscent of the locker room of cowboys after a week of riding at the Stampede rodeo, the home squad put their western spirit on full display, digging deep to overcome a month of adversity ad finish on top of a 2-1 thriller in the Wild West match. Article content 'What a relief that was. It means everything to me to get that goal. I've been waiting for it for a while so there is lots of excitement because it was such a big game for us,' said Thurton. 'We really needed that win, especially against Vancouver. To be able to contribute that way is amazing.' Article content Article content It was a long time coming for Thurton who has created endless chances in each of the first 10 matches. Article content 'The coaches and team have been so patient with me, but I had put a lot of pressure on myself to contribute,' added Thurton. 'I can kind of let it all go now getting that first goal.'

Vancouver, which had its winless streak extended to four games (0-2-2), had 57 per cent of possession with 14 total shots, seven of which were on target. The Rise (3-4-3) have not won a game since May 21, a 2-1 victory over last-place Halifax Tides FC. Vancouver sits fifth in the standings of the six-team league. Montreal, meanwhile, came away with just one point having entered the matchup with a chance to take first place from AFC Toronto with a win. The Roses only had five total shots, with two on target, while Stephanie Hill, Alexandria Hess and Jodi Smith were all shown yellow cards. Montreal (5-2-3) is riding a four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2), having last lost to Toronto 2-0 on May 22.
