Kaalidhar Laapata movie review: Abhishek Bachchan gives a fine performance in uneven film on loneliness, sacrifice, joy
Kaalidhar Laapata movie review Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Daivik Baghela Director: Madhumita Sundararaman Where to watch: Zee5 Rating: ★★★ Kaalidhar Laapata reminded me of Nana Patekar's 2024 film Vanvaas. Both revolve around an ageing man, prone to memory loss, left at a distant, crowded place by his own family, who are unable to look after him anymore. They take over his property, only to encounter a problem for which they need him back. Along the way, the man meets a younger companion who changes his outlook towards life. What makes things murkier is that Kaalidhar's director, Madhumita, had also directed the original Tamil film K.D. in 2019, and this Hindi version is an adaptation. Kaalidhar Laapata movie review: Abhishek Bachchan is the star of this uneven film. Kaalidhar Laapata stars Abhishek Bachchan as the protagonist, a man who has sacrificed his own life for his younger brothers and sister. They couldn't care less about him and hatch an unsuccessful plan to kill him. Overhearing their contempt and sinister plans, he vanishes. Along the way, he meets Ballu (Daivik Baghela), a spirited young boy who lives happily all by himself. The boy teaches him how to be happy too, while his family begins their search for him with heavy hearts as their plans run into a roadblock. What happens next forms the rest of the story. The story is simple, clean, and straight to the point, and given the rarity of such family-friendly content on OTT, it will likely appeal to viewers at home. Abhishek is the anchor of this ship, and he does a good job conveying the initial confusion and helplessness of KD, a man who loses the only home he has ever known. Themes of finding joy, being content with what one has, and sacrificing all find space in the story, which definitely has its moments. While the pace is decent, the film stumbles in the equation between KD and Ballu. It's endearing, no doubt, but at times it's a bit hard to digest that a boy who's roughly 10 has such profound advice to offer. Hindi films have often portrayed child characters as overly street-smart and wise beyond their years, and that doesn't always translate well on screen. Kaalidhar Laapata suffers from the same. The viewer buys into the idea that an older man and a young boy become each other's compass in life, but the boy's wisdom doesn't quite click and feels stretched beyond a point. Daivik, as Ballu otherwise, plays his role very well. Nimrat Kaur does well in a special appearance as KD's love interest. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub plays Subodh, a man deputed by the local missing-found department to find KD. His role isn't as impactful in the writing, though he does his best to make it work. The music by Amit Trivedi is peppy and complements the story. To sum it up, though uneven in parts, Kaalidhar Laapata ultimately celebrates life's simple pleasures and the power of unexpected friendships. It's a bittersweet but hopeful journey, watchable for the performances.

Amitabh Bachchan asked him during the show, "Why did you leave everything and go to the village after achieving so much in life?" Nana said, "I am not from the industry. I come here, work here and then go back. I have never been to the party or gone to the village. I don't like it there. I am from the village and I will stay there. And I like it there". "I have got many times more than I wanted from my mother. It is very easy to be limited in needs. There is no AC. I enjoy it a lot. Just like there are walls in the city, there are mountains in my house. Mountains come from this side and I live nestled between the mountains. It is very nice", he added. During the same episode, the actor also heaped praise on as he shared his experience of working with her. During the episode, an audience member asked Nana Patekar about his experience working with Madhuri Dixit in 'Wajood'. Responding to the same, Nana Patekar said, "It was a great experience. She is an exceptional actress-beautiful, an incredible dancer, and as an actress, she had everything one could ask for. Besides that, she is a wonderful person, and I admire her a lot". Further, the audience asked about the poem, 'Kaise batau mai tumhe', which Nana had recited for Madhuri in the movie. During his interaction with Amitabh Bachchan, Nana Patekar on 'Kaun Banega Crorepati 16', Nana shared about his once-in-a-lifetime experience and opportunity to serve the country on the border. When he first reached out to the senior officers from the division, Nana Patekar's request to join the men in uniform was denied, and the actor was told that only the defence minister could approve it. "I knew our Defence Minister George Fernandes ji, so I called him," Nana recalled. The actor continued, "Even he said it is impossible. I told him that even though the training for commission is six months, I trained for three years. He was surprised and asked me about it. After learning of my experience with the Maratha Light Infantry, he asked me, 'When do you want to go?' He mentioned that he lived and trained with the Maratha Light Infantry of the Army for three years in the early 90s. Back then, he was writing his film 'Prahaar.' Nana dedicated more than two weeks at the front near the LoC in August 1999, assisting the soldiers and even volunteering at the base hospital for a few days. The actor remembered his involvement with the Quick Response Team (QRT) while he was in Kargil. Nana Patekar recalled that he lost a lot of weight during that time; however, his heart was filled with contentment and satisfaction. When Nana Patekar said he would've joined the underworld if not for his acting career: 'I was too violent'

Reflecting on his journey, Nana admitted that had he not pursued a career in acting, his violent temper might have led him into the underworld. Dimple Kapadia and Nana Patekar have worked together in many movies like ' Krantiveer ', 'Prahaar: The Final Attack' and more recently ' Welcome Back '. Nana is always known to be very different from other Bollywood actors, even as a person and a while ago, in an interview, Dimple had called him 'obnoxious', however, praised his acting skills and talent. As she called him 'obnoxious', she was asked if she meant it in a good way or bad way. Reacting to it, she had said during a chat with NDTV, "In a good way, and a bad way. As far as his talent goes, there's no match to him. He is an extremely talented man. When I see talent like him, sau khoon bhi maaf hai. Sab kuch maaf hai. Meri jaan bhi lelo (A hundred murders, everything is forgiven. In fact, take my life too). That's the effect he has on me. But, as a person, with me, he has been very, very nice, kind, and a good friend. But I have also seen his terrible side…the dark side. We all have a dark side which is nicely and safely kept aside."
