Ex-Parkhead hero presents Vardy to Celtic transfer case

The striker is currently without a club after his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season. And Walker, who enjoyed two separate spells at Parkhead, thinks Vardy still has more to give. "I also wonder about Jamie Vardy," he said live on Go Radio. "Obviously, Brendan Rodgers knows him well, and he's been linked with Rangers. Read more: "You remember years ago when the likes of Jermain Defoe came up to Rangers and showed what he was all about and still had the quality. "He's starting XI ready and has all the experience and I think he still has the fitness. "Would he fancy a year up here with Champions League football? I wouldn't rule it out. He would be box office. Great player. "Robbie Keane had a spell at Celtic as well and scored a few goals. "I think the attraction of Champions League football and this mystique that they have down south of Celtic and Rangers going head to head. "I think we are all expecting it to be a bit closer and tighter this year. "Celtic will still be favourites, I have no doubt about that, but it is a great sell for anyone."

Peter Vardy launches new venture focused on future mobility and fintech

English businessman Peter Vardy has launched a new technology and investment business, Peter Vardy Global, which will concentrate on the future of mobility, automotive SaaS [software as a solution], and fintech. This initiative comes in the wake of Vardy's decision to divest most of his retail operations in 2024, allowing the group to redirect its resources towards growth sectors. Peter Vardy Global builds upon a two-decade history in automotive retail, mobility, and finance, during which the group achieved nearly £200m in enterprise value and contributed close to £15m to charitable causes. Vardy said: 'After selling most of our retail operations in 2024, we've retained our Porsche Centres and are redeploying our capital, energy and talent into building and investing in world-class ventures. 'We're leaning into the future by backing innovation that improves lives and rethinking how value is created.' The new venture encompasses various initiatives, including CarMoney, an international car finance platform, and FlexAuto, a flexible leasing provider. It also oversees Peter Vardy Global Ventures, which consists of a portfolio of 11 early-stage investments aimed at technology-led transformation across transport, finance, and vehicle systems. Vardy noted: 'Our success has always come from building businesses early, from scratch or via acquisition. 'Backing people with vision, supported by a committed team, has proved incredibly powerful. We're taking that playbook global.' Peter Vardy Global also upholds a philanthropic mission through The Peter Vardy Foundation. Its Gen+ initiative has aided more than 40,000 young people in Scotland in developing essential 'Meta Skills' necessary for success in a rapidly changing world. Vardy added: 'We want to build great businesses and contribute to building better futures. For us, those two goals are connected.' Looking to the future, the group intends to enhance both its commercial and social impact. Vardy concluded: 'The last 20 years were about building value and contributing to society. "The next 20 will be about doing both, just faster, further and with even more purpose.' Conor Coady to Rangers transfer hits further roadblock as another 'collapsed' deal puts Frank Lampard on notice

New Leicester boss Marti Cifuentes says he "liked what he saw" from Conor Coady in their 1-0 win over Zalaegerzegi on Saturday – a potential hint a move to Rangers could be delayed even further. The defender has been a target at Ibrox all summer and we understand both Rangers and Coady are keen to make it happen in time for Thursday's clash with Panathinaikos. Russell Martin has already named his squad for that Champions League qualifying first leg but there is wiggle room to register two new players 24 hours ahead of it if any new signings are in the door by then. READ MORE: I had a nagging feeling about Emmanuel Fernandez from day one and here's why his transfer to Rangers is going to work READ MORE: Six Rangers stars give Russell Martin a serious headache but there's one thing he can't sacrifice for Panathinaikos But it looks as if new Foxes boss Cifuentes may be taking his time to have a look at Coady. And that's not exactly what Martin will want to hear. Cifuentes said after the friendly: 'There are a lot of positive things we can bring with us. There are a lot of things to improve, which is normal at this stage. 'I like the intention, the attitude, and the application of the team. I like that we wanted to be from day one, a team that is dominant and wants to use possession to attack. The timing of the movement and the rotations, everything will come. 'I like, as well, to see the young boys. I'm very happy with what I see from Jeremy, from Louis, from Evans, from all the young guys. 'And, as well, the application of the experienced players. I liked what I saw from Conor, from Jannik. It's an interesting mix.' Elsewhere the Jamie Vardy ship may have come and gone but he is taking his time over his next move – and a report hints that could open the door to Rangers should they decide to revisit their interest. The Premier League legend is a free agent this summer and the Ibrox side certainly haven't shut down chatter they could be in for the 38-year-old on a short-term deal. Even despite Leicester's noted struggles last term, Vardy hit double figures in the English top flight and he might fancy one last stab at European football before he hangs up his boots. The Mail on Sunday report that he has been 'uncharacteristically slow' to decide on his future and indicate he is considering a few options over his future. Whether one of them is Ibrox is unclear but they do note Rangers are a "massive global name" – the likes of which Vardy has never notched on his CV so far. And it's added that prestige could well lead to Vardy choosing them over the likes of Championship new boys Wrexham, who are chasing an unprecedented fourth straight promotion. Elsewhere Carl Rushworth likely won't be joining Rangers after Brighton decided against loaning the keeper to Ibrox – and Coventry could be set to take advantage. The keeper, who was Russell Martin's No.1 at Swansea, was Brighton's second choice for much of last season but is still yet to make his senior debut for the Seagulls. Reports earlier this summer indicated Rangers were keen on bringing him in to compete with Jack Butland and Liam Kelly. But more recently it's been claimed that deal is off with Rangers instead looking at Sheffield Wednesday's Pierce Charles. Frank Lampard's Coventry may be the side to pounce on Rushworth though and former Aston Villa defender Lee Hendrie told Football League World: "You look at any player or any goalkeeper really that's played or been around the top level, then I think it's a big coup for any football club to bring in someone whose Premier League bound, and particularly being linked with Rangers, which looks like it's collapsed. 'I think Frank (Lampard) will be looking at that and knowing it's a really good signing. "I think that's an area they haven't really struggled with goalkeeper-wise, but having someone of his calibre would be a really good addition to Coventry City.' Jamie Vardy to Celtic transfer curveball would throw up Mission Impossible scenario for Rangers

The Premier League icon is still without a club after calling time on his incredible 13 years with Leicester City earlier this summer Whispers of Jamie Vardy making a sensational switch to Rangers refuse to go away. ‌ But Paul Dickov reckons Celtic would be truly uncatchable if Brendan Rodgers lured the Premier League icon to Parkhead. ‌ Vardy, 38, is still a free agent after departing Leicester City as the club's greatest-ever player at the end of last season. ‌ The former England goal machine has been linked with the likes of Man United and Newcastle, as well as a transfer north of the border. But ex-Foxes hero Dickov believes the veteran hitman would be a formidable signing for five-in-a-row chasing Celtic. Vardy played under Rodgers at the King Power Stadium and with Celts in the market for more firepower, Dickov has no doubt he would fire the Hoops to title no.56. He told WDW Bingo: "Jamie Vardy at 38, has still got a hell of a lot to offer. He's still got the hunger, and real desire in his game. "I'm sure he has plenty of offers from clubs all over the world, but wherever he chooses will gain a Premier League legend and a wealth of experience. "Aside from his experience, his goal-scoring hasn't slowed down. He scored nine goals last season in a poor Leicester team in the most challenging league in the world, so he will score plenty wherever he moves. ‌ "It's difficult to pinpoint where Jamie is going to land, but it could be a real swing in the next couple of seasons of the Scottish Premiership. "If he went to Celtic, it would make it even more difficult for the rest of the teams to catch them. I would go as far as to say borderline impossible. ‌ "However, if he chose Rangers, he could really drag them closer to Celtic with the goals he would score. "If he signs for Rangers, Scotland would have a really competitive league next season, which would be great to watch and draw eyes to the games. "That's how big a factor he could be, and people keep talking about his age, but he is chasing down defenders as well as he was ten years ago, from what I can see. "Whoever signs Vardy will have a fantastic asset who will guarantee goals and energy from the front."

It's fair to say the past year has been a pretty frantic one for Peter Vardy, chief executive of the eponymous automotive business founded in Scotland almost two decades ago. A major deal signed at the tail end of 2024 saw the group sell the majority of its car showroom sites to Parks Automotive. Three dealerships, representing Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, BMW, Omoda and Jaecoo, changed hands in Motherwell, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. It followed the earlier sale of six franchises to Arnold Clark and the closure of its Carz-branded used car supermarkets in the wake of the pandemic and some well-publicised supply shortages. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The sweeping restructure of the business empire has seen Vardy retain its two state-of-the-art Porsche centres in Aberdeen and Perth, having represented the prestigious German sports car brand for the past ten years. Peter Vardy has retained its Porsche dealership centres in Perth, above, and Aberdeen. Picture: Roddy Scott Photography At the same time, the Motherwell-based group, now operating under the Peter Vardy Global umbrella, has been accelerating its other interests and scaling up ventures such as motor finance brokerage CarMoney. A recent recruitment drive saw the business create new sales advisory, finance, compliance, customer service and administrative roles as it continues to grow its presence across the UK. The group also encompasses FlexAuto, a start-up disruptor providing 'flexible vehicle mobility solutions for today's drivers', and Gen+, a leadership and meta-skills programme founded by the Peter Vardy Foundation that aims to get into every school in Scotland. Vardy, whose father Sir Peter Vardy grew Reg Vardy into one of the UK's largest car dealership groups before its sale in 2006, insists that business can be a powerful force for good. Reflecting on the 19 years or so since Peter Vardy Ltd was founded in the wake of that Reg Vardy deal, he told The Scotsman: 'We've always tried to do something that's next generation in business. Make it the best place to work and the best place to buy from and we knew you would get the right financial results if you got those two things right. But we also wanted a 'give back' culture. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We have created about £200 million of enterprise value over that time and of that we've given about £15m away. In that journey there have been some real highs and there's been some lows. Closing the car supermarkets after Covid was a very difficult thing to do. Peter Vardy oversees a number of business and charitable interests. 'The best bit has been the relationships. I was fortunate to recruit some great people and we did a whole load of training programmes that saw young people come through.' The addition of 'Global' into the new group naming seems apt. The investment arm currently has 11 holdings, with eight of those overseas. The aim with most is to take a majority stake in the business going forward. Vardy is looking to take the success the family has had in starting and scaling businesses, along with its decades of automotive know-how to nurture fresh ideas emerging in the sector. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'What we'd like to do is use some of the resources that we have built up to find successful start-up businesses in finance, mobility and automotive in general and see if we can help entrepreneurs scale up their ventures,' asserts Vardy. 'We are quite excited about that. It's a very friendly private equity angle. 'We want to remain in automotive and the areas we understand well and have had some success in. We hope to lean into more technology-focused opportunities if we are looking at future investments. CarMoney is a great technology play. We are not leaving behind what we've been doing for some time.' As the group looks to build on its ethos of giving back, Vardy is also keen to get the ball rolling on a leadership programme that extends beyond schoolkids and into the adult world. The 'values-based' initiative will have at its core a national leadership gathering, dubbed The Calling. Earmarked for November 2026, the ambitious event promises to blend keynote talks, stories from Scottish leaders, creative elements, such as music, film and interviews, and interactive workshops. It will be targeted at leaders across public life - spanning education, business, civic roles and community organisations. An audience of up to 3,000 is anticipated. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Leaders Details have yet to be fleshed out, but Vardy is keen to bring 'some of the world's best leaders' to the event, which he hopes to make an annual fixture. 'I'm in a fortunate position where the business has grown and done well,' he says. 'I'm based in Scotland and very passionate about Scotland and would like to be a small cog in a wheel of seeing Scotland do better. 'It will be a values-based leadership programme that celebrates what the country does well but also challenges people to think bigger. We are really excited about it. If we can have a small impact on a larger stage it would be a great ambition for the Foundation to have.' Vardy is equally passionate about the potential for Gen+ and the wider philanthropic aims of the group's Foundation. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I am not ignoring the business side,' he stresses. 'We have nearly 400 people employed and want to grow that side of things. I am excited about the next chapter. But, if you're asking where my heart is, then the Foundation has done more than I thought it could ever do and I think it can do a lot more.
