LDF's Benedict Fernadez elected metropolitan planning committee chairman

Kochi: CPM councillor Benedict Fernadez won metropolitan planning committee (MPC) chairman post defeating KPCC general secretary Deepthi Mary Varghese. Election was held at the collector's chamber on Tuesday morning. Fernadez was elected chairperson after a tie-breaking draw as both he and Varghese received five votes each. In the elections held to select MPC members last month, both UDF and LDF had secured five members each. Fernadez and Varghese are the corporation's finance standing committee members. Of the 10 members, four were elected from corporation councillors, two from municipal councillors in MPC region, and four from members of panchayats in the MPC limits. Two members belonging to LDF and one from UDF were elected from the panchayats. Two of the municipality representatives are from UDF and while one member is from LDF. Both fronts secured two members each from the corporation. MPC is yet to find an office, and the govt is yet to clarify the powers and responsibilities of the committee. The MPC is expected to play a key role in the development of Kochi and its suburbs. With the tenure of the committee expiring in Nov, only a couple of meetings of the committee can be held by then. Therefore, chances are minimal for the current MPC to take any major decisions or play any crucial roles related to the administration and development of the city and its suburbs. Actor shares ‘goosebumps-evoking' heroics of an all-women flight crew

An Instagram post by actor Antony Varghese sharing what he described as 'goosebumps-evoking' experience while flying from Hyderabad to Kochi on an all-women crew Indigo flight with two aborted landing attempts, and how the entire passengers erupted in applause when the flight eventually landed at the Kochi airport on Thursday afternoon has gone viral. The flight, 6E 6707, which was supposed to land at the Kochi airport at 12.10 p.m., aborted an initial attempt followed by a second attempt before getting diverted to Coimbatore owing to bad weather. The flight eventually landed in Kochi around 2 p.m. Mr. Varghese was returning after wrapping up the shooting of his latest movie in Hyderabad. What seemed like a routine flight turned into something straight out of a movie as the weather turned 'wild,' he wrote. He said the first landing attempt was aborted just a few feet above the runway, followed by a second more intense one when the pilot made a split-second decision to pull up. 'Without even brushing the runway, she lifted the aircraft back into the skies. Goosebumps,' Mr. Antony's post read. The tension in the cabin was palpable, and the passengers were shaken. 'But the way the crew, all women, handled the situation was nothing short of inspiring,' he wrote. When the flight eventually landed safely in Kochi, the cabin erupted into applause. 'To the phenomenal women in the cockpit and the cabin – your quick decisions, precision, and professionalism turned a terrifying situation into a moment of deep respect and gratitude. Thank you for showing us what true grace under pressure looks like,' Mr. Varghese wrapped up his post, which had received nearly 32,000 likes by Friday evening. Indigo Airline sources confirmed that the flight indeed had an all-women crew but declined to share their details. The Kochi airport authorities said the landing was aborted when India Meteorological department had issued a thunderstorm forecast for the area including the airport.

A bus stop in Wayanad trends among Insta crowd

KALPETTA: A bus stop in a remote village in Wayanad has turned into an 'Insta' spot, thanks to the beautiful purple flowers on its roof. Located on the Sultan Bathery-Pattavayal Road in Nambikolly, the beauty of the stop makes people pause, whip out their phones and click a selfie to post on Instagram and other social media platforms. Behind the place's appeal is over a decade worth of hard work put in by Joy Kottukkara and E S Varghese, both local residents. Joy, a daily wage labourer, and Varghese, a farmer, planted a wild garlic plant at the stop and have been nurturing it for the past 12 years. 'We planted the wild garlic plant a decade ago thinking that it would avoid snakes owing to its scent and that it would provide more shade at the stop. We have been watering it and nurturing it all these years. The purple flowers bloom every monsoon season. Later, everyone, including autorickshaw drivers, traders as well as school and office-goers, started helping us maintain the plant,' Varghese said. He said the bus stop gained more popularity this year, and many youngsters have started clicking pictures in front of the place and posting them on Instagram. The bus stop at Nambikolly is in stark contrast to stops that leak in the monsoon season or cause inconvenience to people due to damaged roofs or broken electrical wires. The place is also a testament to the success of public participation in maintaining bus stops. 'There was a time when miscreants and drunkards would camp at the stop at night. Then Joy and Varghese came forward and transformed the place that was used by hundreds of school students. The bus stop has now become a landmark and none dares to make it dirty,' said Biju S, a resident.

What the Israel-Iran Conflict Means for Sector ETFs

ETFs tracking energy, aerospace, and defense stocks have wiped out initial losses following the onset of the conflict between Iran and Israel, instead climbing to new highs amid speculation that a prolonged conflict might drive up oil prices and fuel demand for weapons. The attacks and Iran's retaliatory strikes, which also sent shock waves through Israeli-focused funds and broader markets, have far-reaching implications, with gains and losses expected to amplify the market turmoil of the first half of 2025. Still, some experts maintain that holding is the best strategy and that diversification will continue to keep portfolios afloat, particularly since US Treasury yields have actually risen. 'This just adds to the chaos we've already had this year,' said Sonu Varghese, a global macro strategist at Carson Group. 'How we're talking to advisors is, 'Diversification may not have worked for the last 10, 15 years, but it's really showing its colors now.'' READ ALSO: BlackRock Dumps 14 Funds, Many Being Sustainable Products and Fidelity, Franklin Prep Solana ETFs with Staking The iShares MSCI Israel ETF (EIS) — which tracks an index of Israeli firms, including its major banks, and has $272 million in assets under management — fell from $86 to $82 a share Friday afternoon, per NYSE Arca data, but has since rebounded to a high of $86.70. The ARK Israel Innovative Technology ETF (IZRL), which also tracks Israeli companies, saw a similar dip Friday but is now up to a high of $25 a share. Other sector ETFs whipsawing in the aftermath include: The United States Oil Fund LP ETF (USO), which gained 12.4% last week and is now up 5.3% YTD, reflecting the potential for a longer-term spike in crude oil prices if shipping routes — primarily the Strait of Hormuz — are disrupted. The Breakwave Tanker Shipping ETF (BWET), which tracks crude oil tanker freight rates, jumped 11% Friday and has remained elevated as shipping stocks surge. Back Away, Bonds: In the wake of the strikes, investors have flocked to so-called safe haven ETFs like those tracking the Japanese yen and the long end of the yield curve (such as bonds with a maturity of more than 20 years). However, a properly diversified portfolio doesn't just rely on bonds to diversify from stocks, Varghese said, but includes things like gold and managed futures. 'There's a bull case and the bear case, and that's directly being reflected in our portfolios,' Varghese said. 'I'm not saying this was exactly predictable, but our portfolios have been positioned to account for the fact that bonds may not be the best diversifier going forward.'
