Andhra Pradesh government intensifies safety protocols in industrial units

1 2 Guntur: Alert with the frequent mishaps in the industrial units, the state govt has initiated stringent measures to step up the safety protocols. The state govt asked the factories department to inspect all the hazardous units and take immediate corrective measures. Since several of industrial units secured their safety masterplans many years ago, the govt wanted the officials to make a revisit of the existing safety protocols and motivate the managements to take immediate corrective measures even if its levies additional financial burden. "We have advised the officials to inspect the rules and masterplans of the factories and take additional measures to prevent the mishaps in the industrial units. It will be better for the managements to spend little extra if needed instead of spending huge after the mishaps. In fact, accidents in factories are causing serious casualties which could not be compensated with monetory benefits in all the cases," said labour and industries minister Vasamsetti Subhash. Taking the issue with a serious note, senior officials in Guntur district launched a special drive with a focus on shifting the liquid ammonia pipeline (receiver tank) from inside the industrial plants to outside. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Can Now Earn Crypto Every Time You Spend Gemini Learn More Undo The shifting of ammonia tanks is expected to prevent hazards due to leakage of dreaded gas. The officials found it as serious issue particularly due to the presence of huge number of cold storages in and around Guntur city. The safety masterplans which were approved decades ago, did not notice the issue of ammonia tanks and allowed the completion of the construction. In fact, the structural engineers, who designed the cold storages, kept the space for ammonia chambers inside the cooling units in order to save costs and also space. The managements, who too were more vigilanct about saving monies, completed the structures without knowing the hazardous impact of the ammonia tanks. "I have persuaded the managements of cold storages particularly due to my own experience in a mishap due to the leakage of ammonia in SPY Agros in Nandyal. At least three people died in that mishap," said M V Sivakumar Reddy, deputy chief inspector of factories. He said that the ammonia receivers/ tanks were shifted from inside to outside of compressor and machinery room. "We have accepted to shift the tanks after detailed discussions and awareness created by the officials. Although, shifting costs around Rs.3-4 lakh, it is very small amount when the workers safety was kept in mind," said Lal Vazeer, a cold storage owner and TDP leader.
