TN students' dream to turn writers takes wings

CHENNAI: A Dhanya Varshini, a precocious Class 2 child of the Panchayat Union Primary School of Kangayam union in Tiruppur district, has become a storyteller in her own right as her observations of a bird's world have now become part of the books released under the state government's Vasippu Iyakkam (reading movement) this year. Her story Kuruvi Muttai (Sparrow's Egg) will now be read by students across the state. The state government launched the programme two years ago to promote reading as a movement among schoolchildren. Under the initiative, students are encouraged to read books suited to their reading level during free time and library period in schools. The 'iyakkam' has taken a leap of faith in its third year, with 51 books, containing one story each written entirely by a student or a teacher, being released this year. More than 1.74 crore copies of these books are currently being distributed among students across the state, and Dhanya has now earned the pride of place of being the youngest story contributor. It all began when Dhanya spotted a sparrow building a nest on the porch of her tiled-roof house last year. She was thrilled to observe the bird's routine and her father would gently lift her on his shoulders so that she could peek into the nest where she saw three eggs one day. She watched as the eggs hatched and the birds fed and cared for the babies, and the chicks eventually grew big to build a new nest of their own. Dhanya's story also describes how her home turned into a lively space for the birds and the chicks. Dhanya's excitement about the experience led her to narrate the story to several people, including her teacher G Maheswari.

TN government mandates weekly reading themes and activities for Classes 1 to 8 in all state schools

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has issued a Government Order (G.O.) to streamline the reading of non-academic books among students in Classes 1 to 8 across all government schools. The initiative also aims to enhance the effective use of school libraries, with a structured plan that spans the entire academic year. As per the new directive, students will receive books on a variety of weekly themes, including sports, animals, environment, science, the importance of education, and the uses of the Internet, among others. The reading schedule has been tailored to match the reading levels of each grade, ensuring accessibility and engagement for students across the primary and upper primary stages. In addition to reading, the G.O. outlines a comprehensive framework of activities such as storytelling sessions, speeches, and group discussions to deepen student engagement with the material. These sessions are expected to foster language development, critical thinking, and creativity. This initiative is part of a larger effort announced by the School Education Minister to promote reading proficiency in government schools through storytelling events, reading challenges, and theme-based reading weeks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo To support this, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been directed to develop appropriate reading material for each weekly theme. The Integrated Education Department will oversee the implementation of the programme at the school level. Officials from the Elementary Education Department stated that this move builds on the success of the 'Vasippu Iyakkam (Reading Movement)', which was scaled up last year to include all government schools in Tamil Nadu. Under that initiative, each classroom received more than 120 Tamil books curated for different reading levels. The latest directive refines the 'Vasippu Iyakkam' initiative by offering a clear and structured reading plan, which teachers can follow more easily and implement effectively. The Directorate of Elementary Education has meticulously prepared the academic schedule, aligning it with developmental reading levels of students from Classes 1 through 8. Education officials believe the initiative will help cultivate a reading culture among young learners, support holistic learning, and make better use of the extensive library resources already present in government schools. Tamil Nadu education department to roll out reading plan for government schools

CHENNAI: The School Education Department has issued a government order to streamline the reading of non-academic books among government school students in classes 1-8 and enhance the use of school libraries. The schedule outlines weekly topics on which books can be provided to students in each class throughout the academic year. The topics range from sports, animals, environment, science, to the importance of education and uses of internet, among others. It also includes a plan to organise activities such as storytelling sessions, speeches, and group discussions based on reading material. This move is in line with school education minister's announcement that storytelling sessions, reading challenges, and theme-based reading weeks would be introduced in government schools to improve reading proficiency through better use of libraries. The G.O. has also directed the SCERT to prepare suitable reading materials for each topic and the Integrated Education Department to implement the initiative. Last year, the School Education Department scaled up its Vasippu Iyakkam initiative to cover all government schools across TN. As part of this, each classroom was provided with over 120 Tamil books tailored to various reading levels. Elementary Education Department officials said this latest initiative is a refinement of Vasippu, designed to provide more clarity for teachers. The Directorate of Elementary Education has prepared a schedule that matches the reading levels of students in each class, they added.
