Uttar Pradesh: People perform Yoga at Namo Ghat ahead of International Yoga Day
Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 17 (ANI): People gathered in the early hours of Tuesday at Namo Ghat in Varanasi to perform yoga ahead of the 11th International Yoga Day on June 21. The peaceful session by the river saw many participants starting their day with stretches and breathing exercises. Earlier on Monday, the district administration organised a yoga session at Chandra Shekhar Azad Park in Prayagraj. Participants performed various yoga poses. Meanwhile, highlighting the health benefits of yoga, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani urged people to incorporate yoga into their daily routine. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking yoga to the global stage. Speaker Devnani made the remarks while speaking to reporters after participating in a yoga rehearsal session at the Rajasthan Assembly on Monday ahead of the 11th International Day of Yoga. 'Yoga is very important for a healthy mind, body and soul...I thank PM Modi, Baba Ramdev and many other organisations for promoting should make Yoga a part of our everyday life,' he said. Preparations are gaining momentum across the country for the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), scheduled for June 21st. Visakhapatnam, selected as the national venue for this year's celebrations, witnessed a comprehensive field inspection and high-level review meeting by senior officials from the Ministry of Ayush and the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The inspection at ground level, led by Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, and K Vijayanand, Special Chief Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh, included senior officials such as Monalisa Dash, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, District Collector M N Harendhira Prasad, and heads of key departments including Health, Urban Planning, Ayush, and VMRDA. Their joint visit to the main sites--RK Beach, Rishikonda Beach, Andhra University, and GITAM University--underscored the scale and seriousness with which the event is being planned. These venues will not only host the main yoga demonstration but will also serve as centres for cultural, educational, and wellness activities, resonating with the Prime Minister's vision of yoga as a people-centric movement. In December 2014, the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by India to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21, which is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Since 2015, the Prime Minister has led the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations at various iconic locations, including Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow, Mysuru and even the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Rajasthan Assembly Speaker to visit France and Germany to observe parliamentary best practices
Jaipur, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani will embark on a seven-day visit to France and Germany to observe parliamentary systems and practices in both the countries. He is scheduled to depart from Jaipur on Tuesday morning for New Delhi and will fly to Paris later in the day. The visit is being organised under the aegis of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and will include interactions with lawmakers and officials from both France and Germany. During the visit, Devnani will observe the functioning of the French National Assembly , the Senate , the German Bundestag , and the Bundesrat . He will also share insights into legislative innovations introduced in the Rajasthan Assembly. Terming the tour significant in the context of parliamentary cooperation, Devnani said the visit aims to strengthen democratic engagement, encourage international collaboration, and provide a platform for sharing legislative best practices. The Speaker will also hold discussions on digital legislative processes and social inclusion with elected representatives and senior officials from the national parliaments, local legislative bodies, and cultural and academic institutions of both the countries. "This visit is a strong medium to present India's democratic traditions and the capabilities of state legislatures at a global level. It will certainly help enrich parliamentary functioning," Devnani stated. He is also scheduled to meet parliamentary leaders, senior lawmakers, Indian diaspora members and officials at Indian embassies in Paris and Berlin. The engagements also include interactions with officials from the Ramakrishna Vedantic Centre, science and technology experts and prominent members of the Indian community. Devnani will be accompanied by assembly principal secretary Bharat Bhushan Sharma on the tour. Apart from the official engagements, the Speaker will also visit historical, cultural and spiritual landmarks in both the countries to gain a deeper understanding of local traditions and heritage.

With IDY celebrations planned at one lakh locations across the state, and five lakh participants expected in Visakhapatnam alone, the initiative is a powerful embodiment of the Prime Minister's appeal to make yoga truly inclusive, accessible, and transformative. The Ministry of Ayush lauded the proactive leadership of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, stating that the state's ambitious scale and grassroots engagement model reflect the evolving spirit of IDY as a global wellness campaign rooted in Indian tradition. The warrant comes in compliance with the high court's May 1 order that upheld Meena's three-year jail sentence for intimidating a govt official at Supreme Court on May 7 rejected Meena's special leave petition for relief and directed him to surrender within two weeks, reinforcing the legal obligation of the Speaker for disqualification of an assembly member under Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, which mandates that any legislator sentenced to two years or more in prison stands contacted by TOI, Devnani remained unavailable for a statement. Sources in the assembly secretariat confirmed that as of Monday, no instructions were issued to begin disqualification procedures of the BJP MLA. "No instructions have been passed for any action as of today," said an official of Opposition Tikaram Jully expressed serious concern over the inaction, stating, "The Speaker has decimated the spirit of the Constitution. It seems that the court is the only option left for the opposition to seek justice. I reminded the Speaker's office three times to take appropriate action but there was no response. His office only cited engagements outside Jaipur.
