Selection of minor courses in Calicut University: demand to set up more Boards of Studies

At a time when concerns have been raised about the selection of minor (subsidiary) courses for four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUGP) in colleges affiliated to the University of Calicut, the Kerala Private College Teachers' Association (KPCTA) has sought the setting up of Boards of Studies (BoS) in 33 programmes to address them. Functionaries of the association said on Tuesday that the students pursuing these subjects as major (main) were at present forced to select minor courses from unrelated subjects because of the rules governing the FYUGP. This was happening because of the insistence of the authorities that the minor courses should be from a separate department and under a different BoS. A large number of students were being compelled to choose as minor courses subjects which they had not studied during their Plus Two courses. In a memorandum to P. Raveendran, Vice-Chancellor, Senate members affiliated to the KPCTA demanded that the university take steps to constitute separate BoS for minor courses related to the 33 major programmes to solve the issue. For example, there can be separate boards for the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) programme and BCom (Professional) programme. It would help students who pursue normal BCom course choose minor courses from that stream. Likewise, separate boards can be set up for BA (Arabic) and BA (Functional Arabic) as well, they said. Meanwhile, a six-member Syndicate committee appointed by the V-C to address the concerns of students related to the selection of minor courses is expected to submit its proposals later this week. The committee is reported to have suggested separate BoS for BA (Arabic) and BA (Functional Arabic) and for BA (Music) and programmes in Violin, Veena and Mridangam. However, it is also of the opinion that having BoS in all the 33 programmes could be impractical.

CMRL-Exalogic case: Kerala High Court issues notice to Veena, 12 others

The Kerala High Court has issued notice to Veena T., the daughter of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, her IT firm Exalogic Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and 11 others who had been arraigned as respondents in the case pertaining to the allegations regarding the financial transactions between Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd. (CMRL) and Exalogic. The notice was issued on a petition filed by BJP leader Shone George, seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the allegations. The 11 other respondents include Sasidharan Kartha, the MD of CMRL. In the petition, Mr. George said that the contents of the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) probe report on the alleged financial transactions between the two companies had referred to corporate fraud. But the SFIO had limited the scope of its probe to offences under the Companies Act and did not investigate the motive behind the alleged illegal payments. He thus sought further probe in coordination with the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Election Commission, since the findings involved offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the Representation of People's Act. Veena's stance Ms. Veena had in an affidavit before the High Court in June refuted the allegation that her company is a 'benami' firm, and said it is operated independently of her father. In response to a PIL filed seeking a CBI probe into the allegations pertaining to the financial transactions between the two companies, she had said that the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs had ordered a probe by the SFIO into certain affairs of the CMRL, including its transactions with Exalogic, under the Companies Act. As the SFIO was currently seized of the matter, all other agencies are precluded from probing it, she had contended then.

Girl drowns in pool in Karnataka, resort owners asked to pay Rs 10 lakh to her parents

Bengaluru: A family holiday turned into a nightmare for a Bengaluru couple after their 12-year-old daughter drowned in an unsupervised swimming pool at a resort in Hassan district. Holding the resort owners guilty of negligence and deficiency in service, the Bengaluru Urban II additional district consumer disputes redressal commission ordered payment of Rs 10 lakh as compensation, along with 6% interest, to the girl's parents. The saga unfolded on May 28, 2023, when Dhanaraj, a software engineer, and his wife Veena, both residents of Doddakallasandra in the city, took their daughter Kushi (a class 6 student) for a weekend holiday to Dwarasamudra Resort near Belur in Hassan on a colleague's recommendation. Veena's sister Deepa and her children, Ricky Roy and Sara, also accompanied them. Two rooms were booked for Rs 15,000, with an advance of Rs 8,000 paid via UPI. The family checked into the resort around 1.15pm and went to the restaurant for lunch. While the couple was still at the restaurant, the children went to play near the swimming pool. The couple was unaware that the resort even had a pool and that it lacked supervision. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo It was only when their niece came running, wet and frightened, did they realise something had gone wrong at the pool. The family took both children to the nearest hospital 10km away, where Kushi was declared dead. The boy survived. The incident was reported at Arehalli police station. The postmortem confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia due to drowning. The couple filed a consumer complaint on June 18, 2024, alleging that deficiency in service led to their daughter's death. In defence, the resort's proprietors, CR Vijaya Keshava and his son CV Apurva, claimed they were only tenants and not responsible for managing the facility. However, the commission, after perusing court records and civil suits filed by the proprietors themselves, found that they had constructed and operated the pool, and continued to manage the resort business under the name Dwarasamudra. No trade licence The commission bench, comprising judges Vijaykumar M Pawale and Anuradha V, observed that the resort was operating without a trade licence and had failed to produce even a written version of defence. All documents submitted by the complainants went unchallenged. The commission found the swimming pool was constructed in violation of sanctioned plans and without adherence to safety standards. It held that there was a clear deficiency in service on the part of the resort proprietors and that they had failed in their duty to provide a safe environment for guests, particularly children. The commission stated in its order: "The tragic incident could have been avoided if proper safety measures like a lifeguard, clear sign boards regarding depth, prohibition of entry without adult supervision, and basic medical facilities were provided. This clearly amounts to gross deficiency in service." Accordingly, the commission directed the resort and its proprietors on July 3 to pay Rs 10 lakh with 6% interest from June 18, 2024, as compensation.
