Negeri Sembilan seeks state funding for cooperatives in 2026 budget

NEGERI SEMBILAN: The state government will request funding for cooperative development in the 2026 Budget, announced State Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Action Committee chairman S. Veerapan. Currently, no state funds are allocated for cooperatives, with financial support coming solely from the Federal Government via the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM). Veerapan highlighted that Melaka, despite its smaller size and lower revenue, allocates state funds to SKM Melaka. 'We intend to follow that example,' he said during the Business Exploration and Networking Programme (Ekspansi) in Melaka, held in conjunction with National Cooperative Day 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen existing cooperatives in Negeri Sembilan, which had 787 registered cooperatives as of December 31 last year. These cooperatives boast 192,000 members, RM123 million in shares, RM404 million in assets, and RM187 million in revenue. Veerapan added that his team will gather detailed funding requirements from SKM Negeri Sembilan before presenting the proposal in the state budget consultation session this September. At the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Koperasi Gabungan Masjid-Masjid Negeri Melaka (Kogmas) and Koperasi Kolej Vokasional Port Dickson, facilitating bottled mineral water supply from Kogmas to the latter. - Bernama

Negeri Sembilan To Request State Funding For Cooperatives In 2026 Budget

MELAKA, July 26 (Bernama) -- A request for funding will be made to the state government for the development of cooperatives in Negeri Sembilan as part of the 2026 Budget, said State Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Action Committee chairman, S. Veerapan He said to date, no funds have been allocated by the state government for cooperative development in Negeri Sembilan. Instead, the funding received has come from the Federal Government through the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) state branch. "This is important because, in Melaka, despite being a smaller state with lower revenue than Negeri Sembilan, the state government allocates funding to SKM Melaka. We intend to follow that example," Veerapan told Bernama. He added that the state government's support is essential to ensure that cooperatives in Negeri Sembilan benefit and strengthen the development of existing cooperatives. Veerapan said this after attending the Business Exploration and Networking Programme (Ekspansi), organised by the Negeri Sembilan government with cooperatives from the state, Sarawak, and Sabah. The event, held in Melaka for National Cooperative Day 2025, was also attended by SKM Negeri Sembilan director, Radiatul Fitri Dollah. Veerapan further said that his team would gather more details from SKM Negeri Sembilan regarding the funding needs for cooperative development in the state. This information will be proposed and discussed during the upcoming 2026 State Budget consultation session, expected to take place in September. As of Dec 31 last year, Negeri Sembilan had 787 registered cooperatives, with nearly 192,000 members. The cooperatives had accumulated shares totaling RM123 million, assets worth RM404 million, and a total revenue of RM187 million Earlier at the event, Veerapan witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Koperasi Gabungan Masjid-Masjid Negeri Melaka (Kogmas), represented by its chairman Zaidan Abd Hadi, and Koperasi Kolej Vokasional (KV) Port Dickson represented by its director Mohammad Shafie Hamir.

Negeri Sembilan KPDN seizes 1,000 litres of subsidised diesel in Seremban

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) confiscated approximately 1,000 litres of subsidised diesel during operations Op Tiris and Op Jeriji in Taman Angsamas. The raid, conducted late yesterday evening, also led to the seizure of a Daihatsu lorry, a 1,000-litre IBC tank, a water storage tank, a pump, and pipe hoses, with a total estimated value of RM18,912.91. S. Veerapan, State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumerism Committee chairman, stated that the inspection uncovered unauthorised diesel storage at a residential property, suspected for distribution. 'An individual, identified as the owner of the lorry and premises, was responsible for the operation,' he said in a statement today. Investigations revealed that the suspect did not possess a permit to store controlled goods, potentially violating Regulation 3(1) of the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974. Further inquiries are ongoing. Veerapan emphasised that trading controlled goods without a permit is a serious offence, threatening consumer safety and market stability. - Bernama

Negeri Sembilan activates haze and open burning response plan

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan government has activated its state-level response plan under the National Haze Action Plan and National Open Burning Action Plan following directives from the Department of Environment (DOE). State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman S. Veerapan confirmed the move after the Air Pollutant Index (API) surpassed 150 for 24 consecutive hours. 'The state government will intensify patrols and enforcement against open burning activities, especially in high-risk agricultural and industrial areas. 'We will also assess the implementation of cloud seeding technology in collaboration with federal agencies should air pollution levels continue to rise,' he said in a statement. Veerapan urged residents to report open burning via the DOE complaint hotline and support sustainability efforts. According to the DOE's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), eight areas in Peninsular Malaysia recorded unhealthy API levels as of 6 pm. Alor Gajah in Melaka recorded the highest reading at 157, followed by Seremban (155), Kemaman (153), Banting (152), Temerloh (152), Balok Baru (152), Nilai (146), and Johan Setia (140). An API between 101 and 200 is considered unhealthy, posing risks to vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions. – Bernama

Workers' dorm fire: Labour Department launches investigation under Act 446

SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan Labour Department has launched an investigation into a company over alleged non-compliance with the Employees' Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446) at a construction site. State entrepreneurship, human resources, climate change, cooperatives and consumer affairs committee chairman S. Veerapan said the investigation was initiated following a fire involving 30 container units serving as workers' dormitories at Forest Heights here two days ago. "Initial investigations found that the accommodation, provided by a company acting as the main contractor, lacked valid certification under Act 446. "As such, an investigation paper has been opened under Section 24D of Act 446, and all workers have been instructed to relocate to a certified Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ)," he said in a statement Wednesday (July 2). He added that about 46 certified CLQs were operating in Negri Sembilan and that employers who did not provide their own CLQ could choose from the available list to house their workers. "I have repeatedly reminded employers to house their workers only in certified CLQs. I hope there will be no more violations like this. We will go all out against any party that refuses to comply with the law," he said. Veerapan said that the department would not compromise on workers' welfare and reminded subcontractors bringing foreign workers to any factory in the state that they must provide proper accommodation and ensure timely wage payments. He said the department would take firm action against any form of non-compliance by employers to ensure the safety, health, and dignity of workers were always protected. No injuries were reported, as the workers had not yet returned from their shifts when the incident occurred. The dormitories reportedly housed around 40 workers. – Bernama
