Pets At Home trims profit forecast on soft demand, shares slide

July 31 (Reuters) - British retailer Pets At Home (PETSP.L), opens new tab cut its annual profit forecast on Thursday as pet owners reduce spending on accessories and toys for their companions amid pressures on household finances. Shares of the company, which also offers grooming and veterinary services, fell as much as 8%, and were down 4.9% at 232 pence at 1305 GMT. Demand for pets has fallen in Britain after a pandemic-era surge, and owners are spending less on treats as economic uncertainty and sticky inflation pressure their budgets. The company forecast underlying pre-tax profit of between 110 million pounds and 120 million pounds ($146 million-$159 million) for the year ending March 2026, down from its prior estimate of between 115 million and 125 million pounds. Pets At Home said retail market growth was slower than it had expected in the first quarter of its financial year, and reaching the top end of its annual forecast would require an uptick. British firms are struggling with rising labour costs, driven by higher social security contributions and minimum wage increases, fuelling concerns over potential price hikes and job cuts. Analysts at Jefferies called Pets At Home's profit downgrade "disappointing", but noted encouraging signs such as improving trading trends, impressive growth from the veterinary division and smaller market share losses. Like-for-like revenue growth in the company's Vet unit rose 7.8% in the 16 weeks to July 17. ($1 = 0.7532 pounds)

80 veterinary graduates face uncertain future as degrees unrecognised in Bathinda

Bathinda: The careers of 80 Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) graduates from the College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, Bathinda, hang in the balance after the Punjab State Veterinary Council (PSVC) cancelled their registrations. The measure was taken a month ago after it emerged that the govt-run college, though affiliated with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Gadvasu), lacks recognition from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and is not listed in Schedule-I of the Indian Veterinary Council (IVC) Act. The affected graduates, who completed their five-year BVSc course in March 2025, were shocked to receive a PSVC notice on June 28, declaring their registrations "cancelled with immediate effect". They were further instructed to surrender their certificates by July 3, under threat of legal action. On Monday, the graduates staged a protest, demanding immediate action from authorities to validate their degrees and safeguard their professional prospects. "We paid a huge fee for five years, only to be told our college isn't recognised," said a graduate. University and college officials met with the graduates and their parents, assuring them that efforts are under way to resolve the matter with higher authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Following these assurances, the students agreed to defer their protest until Friday, with a warning that if justice was not served, demonstrations would resume next Monday. Dr Digvijay Singh, dean, College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, said that Gadvasu authorities are in continuous dialogue with the Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying. The objective, he stated, is to secure recognition for the college and its inclusion in Schedule-I of the IVC Act. According to Dr. Singh, a VCI team inspected the college in Feb and subsequently recommended recognition to the Union ministry. While the ministry raised certain queries, the university has since provided the necessary clarifications.
