A Complete Guide to Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' Adaptation

Guillermo del Toro's next project has been years in the making. The Academy Award–winning director—known for his fantastical touch on horror stories, from Pan's Labyrinth (2006) to Pinocchio (2022)—will adapt Mary Shelley's seminal 1818 novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Widely credited as the first-ever science-fiction book, Shelley chronicled the tale of Victor Frankenstein, an obsessive scientist who discovers a new way to create life. Through his experiments, Frankenstein gives rise to a grotesque but intelligent creature whose existence instills terror in all who encounter him. Del Toro's unique perspective on filmmaking stems from his love of Shelley's novel. 'My favorite novel in the world is Frankenstein,' he told Collider in a 2010 interview. 'I'm going to misquote it horribly, but the monster says, 'I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear.' As a child that was disenfranchised from everything, and that was in a world that was the wrong size, run by the wrong people, the wrong morale and the wrong rules, I felt completely outside of that, and I wanted some measure of control, and the measure of control I found was through fear.' Ahead, we break down everything we know so far about del Toro's take on Frankenstein. With its Netflix release date slated for November, Frankenstein will surely be a top contender for the perfect fall spooky watch. Del Toro has recruited some of the most beloved names in Hollywood to lead his adaptation of Frankenstein. Oscar Isaac is set to portray Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist whose eerie invention goes awry. Meanwhile, Jacob Elordi will play Frankenstein's monster, a creature whose lifeless body is reanimated through electricity. Other names associated with del Toro's project include Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza and Christoph Waltz as Harlander, as well as Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Covery, and Charles Dance. The official teaser trailer, which dropped in May 2025, gives fans their first glimpse into the eerie world that del Toro crafted for Frankenstein. 'What manner of creature is that? What manner of devil made him?' a voice asks as the camera pans to a tall and foreboding figure standing alone near the horizon line. 'I did,' Isaac answers as a weary and fearful Frankenstein. Watch the full teaser below. In the first-look photos released by Netflix, Isaac can be seen as Victor Frankenstein as he speaks at a medical lecture hall and works in his grisly laboratory. Del Toro previously talked about the effect that Shelley's Gothic novel had on his perspective as a filmmaker. 'The monster says, 'I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear,'' he said during a 2010 interview with Collider. 'The reality is that I feel that fear is a very spiritual emotion. In a world where we are so pragmatic and materialistic, fear is the only emotion that allows even a sophisticated person to believe in something beyond. We are such skeptics that we find it difficult to believe in God and angels and a spiritual afterlife, but a moment of fear makes our spirit so vulnerable that it allows us to believe in something beyond that. It's also a boundary, and there's nothing that defines who you are more than boundaries, whether you cross them or not, in every aspect of your life, and horror is a really great boundary.' It's alive! Netflix debuted a spooky first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" during the streamer's Tudum event on Saturday, May 31. The latest adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi will transform into Frankenstein's monster. Isaac's Victor Frankenstein begins the trailer by saying, over a shot of a ship in the Arctic, that he has become determined that "the memory of my evils should die with me." Later, when asked who created the creature, a tortured Victor replies, "I did." From there, the footage teases scenes of Victor Frankenstein tinkering in his lab, building up to a shot of lightning striking and bringing life to the monster. "In seeking life, I created death," Dr. Frankenstein says, and the movie's tagline declares that "only monsters play God." The trailer concludes with Frankenstein's monster, whose face is obscured, attacking a group of men on a ship before calling out for his maker, growling, "Victor!" Mia Goth also stars as Victor Frankenstein's fiancée Elizabeth Lavenza, who is briefly seen in the footage. During an event in January previewing Netflix's 2025 slate, the filmmaker said the movie "has been on my mind since I was a child, for 50 years," and that he has been trying to make it for about 25 years. "In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with 'Frankenstein,'" he quipped. "And they probably would be right. You see, over the decade, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn't get more personal than this." Stunning First Trailer For Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN — GeekTyrant

Netflix has just dropped the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro long-awaited film Frankenstein , and it looks like he made a beautiful and stunning film! I'm very excited about this movie and it looks like the filmmaker has delivered somthing special and I absolutley love the visuals! Del Toro prevously opened up about the film and what he is looking to do with it saying: 'Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes? For the first time, I considered that. It's an emotional story for me. It's as personal as anything. I'm asking a question about being a father, being a son… I'm not doing a horror movie — ever. I'm not trying to do that.' Del Toro's stories often center on creatures the world sees as monsters, and instead reveal something deeply empathetic and human within them. Their approach leans into the heart of the story rather than the horror, a direction Del Toro's been circling for decades. He even traced his fascination with the creature back to a scene from Billy Wilder's The Seven Year Itch . 'The first time I thought I was going to avenge the creature was when Marilyn Monroe is coming out [of the movies] in The Seven Year Itch with Tom Ewell, and she says the creature just needed somebody to like him. 'I fell in love with Marilyn, and I fell in love with the creature in that scene at a very early age. And I thought, you know, all we have is people that look at people the wrong way. That's what we have in this world.' The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. It's explained that 'much of the film, including this laboratory scene, takes place within the remnants of once-great structures.' Del Toro says: 'Gothic romance was born partially out of the fascination with ruins. Sometimes they're more beautiful than the building complete because it's the clash of creation and destruction.' Del Toro previously said of the project, 'It's a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it's basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn't have done 10 years ago. Now I'm brave or crazy enough or something, and we're gonna tackle it.' Frankenstein stars Jacob Elordi as the Monster, Oscar Isaac as Victor, Mia Goth ( MaXXXine, The Odyssey ) as Victor's fiancée, Elizabeth Lavenza; Christoph Waltz ( Inglorious Basterds, del Toro's Pinocchio ) as Dr. Septimus Pretorius, Victor's former professor who originated in Bride of Frankenstein ; Lars Mikkelsen ( The Witcher, Ahsoka ) as Captain Anderson, a seeming replacement for Captain Walton, leader of a voyage of discovery towards the northern pole; and Ralph Ineson ( Game of Thrones, The Fantastic Four: First Steps ) as Professor Kempre, who in the novel is a professor of natural philosophy described as 'an uncouth man, but deeply imbued in the secrets of his science.' The movie is expected to debut on Netflix later this fall. Watch the trailer and tell us what you think!
