Pastel-coloured homes for sale in England, Scotland and Wales

Despite recent news stories saying that some residents are painting their properties black to deter influencers and tourists from posing outside, this is still very much an area loved for its colourful streets. This majestic Victorian home is over five floors and painted blue, with window frames and pillars picked out in white. The kitchen-diner runs the entire length of the lower-ground floor and opens on to the garden. There's a sauna on the first floor but the crowning glory is the decked roof terrace and Jacuzzi. £4.95m. Sotheby's International Realty, 020 4613 0266 Photograph: Dimitrios Sofianopoulos/Sotheby's International Realty The old planning office for Millers shipbuilders, right on the picturesque harbourfront, dates to the 18th century and is rendered in cream with a soft green trim running around the windows and door. B-listed, the characterful property has four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are views of the sea from every room through leaded sash windows. St Monans is a historic fishing village 12 miles south of St Andrews, 'the home of golf', and is considered a real East Neuk gem. It sits on the Fife coastal path from Elie to Pittenweem. £315,000. Galbraith, 01334 659 980 Photograph: Galbraith Suffolk pink, a very particular traditional shade, was first developed in the 14th century and is today fiercely protected by curators, councils and residents of the county. This timber-framed home, the Sparrows Nest, is younger than its famous colour, dating back to the 17th century, and has a new thatch and an extension added 15 years ago. A double-aspect sitting room is centred around a large inglenook fireplace. The garden circles the house and has views across neighbouring fields on the edge of the village eight miles from Newmarket. £550,000. Bedfords, 01284 769 999 Photograph: Bedfords Brynymor House was built in 1800, when this was one of the busiest ports and trading hubs in Wales, as a trophy home to symbolise the wealth and status of the sea captain who would live there. In a soft yellow, the Grade II*-listed Georgian pile covers four floors and sits on the edge of the Teifi estuary. Almost two hectares (4.5 acres) of grounds stretch out on all sides, mostly woodland, with formal gardens at the front that run down to the water. There's a kitchen garden and a handcrafted greenhouse, as well as a stone barn. £1.8m. Country Living Group, 01437 616101 Photograph: Country Living Group The entrance of this mint green Grade II-listed terrace cottage opens into the large reception room full of period features. From here there are steps leading down to the basement and stairs up to the next level. Further on is the kitchen, the showpiece of the house, with bespoke cabinets and marble worktops. The garden is mostly lawn, and there is an outbuilding with a washroom, a large summerhouse and a hot tub. Be aware that there is a right of way across the back garden for the neighbouring property via a gate. £650,000. Mullucks, 01799 520 520 Photograph: Mullucks

Look inside: Waterloo Road Victorian offers enthralling vista for €2.85m

Address : 20 Waterloo Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 Price : €2,850,000 Agent : DNG View this property on Looking out through the attic window at number 20 Waterloo Road is quite the experience. The sheer height of this three-storey over-basement Victorian giant comes as a surprise as you don't realise how far up you have gone to reach the top as you take it floor by floor. Much time could be spent taking in the views from the house's roof-level vantage point. From the beautiful old stonework on the neighbouring period properties on surrounding roads to the Gothic architecture of St Bart's church in the distance, Dublin 4 looks pretty fine on a summer's morning. Waterloo Road is just minutes away from the main city streets, yet it doesn't feel like a busy run-through. The road is wide and tree-lined, with the houses set back, allowing for privacy and peace. And peace is one thing you notice in number 20. It is surprisingly quiet inside, even in the rooms at the front of the house. The sash windows are original but have been restored using methods that carefully balance tradition and functionality. The five-bedroom house, extending to 325sq m (3,498sq ft), is entered through the original front door that looks as good as new following a recent restoration. Off the hallway, with its original coving, centre rose and framed archway, is the diningroom. This room overlooks the front garden and has a tiled cast-iron fireplace, ornate mouldings and mirrored shutters that add a bit of glitz to dinner parties. Entrance hall Diningroom Chandelier, centre rose, and coving Behind this, at the back of the house, is the kitchen with solid timber units. The owners, who have lived here for over 30 years, joke that if the TV show Friends can have a home where they can step out of a window and on to a balcony, so can they. They are referring to the large sash window in the kitchen that is low enough to allow one to comfortably step out and on to a raised terrace. Large enough for a table and chairs to enjoy a morning coffee, the sunny spot has steps down to the garden. READ MORE Kitchen Raised terrace Back in the house, on the first-floor return there are double doors that open into an elegant study. Up on the first floor itself are the formal reception rooms. The drawingroom is exactly what one expects from a home of this stature, with stunning cornicing and centre rose, an open marble fireplace and the original wooden floor. Double doors open into the livingroom with blue walls and carpet adding to the character. The room is less formal than its neighbour, but no less impressive with its original features. Study Drawingroom Livingroom There's a second chance to step outside from another sash window on the second-floor return to a small, tiled terrace – a great spot for listening to concerts at the nearby Aviva Stadium on a still night, according to the owners. There are three bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor, and a staircase that takes you up to the converted attic. This space has a large, bright room due to the installation of two Velux windows that offer the best views in the house, and a bathroom, as well as plenty of space left in the eaves for storage. Bedroom Bedroom Bathroom The accommodation at number 20 continues in the basement where there are two more large rooms with one currently being used as a bedroom and the other, that opens out to the garden, as a family room. There is also a new bathroom at this level and a utility under the granite steps, with a door out to a terrace at the front of the house. The south-east-facing rear garden is mostly laid in lawn with tall birch trees and solid granite walls adding to the privacy. This peaceful city oasis has a paved patio at the back and a sunken terrace just outside the house with the balcony above providing cover on a rainy day. Rear garden Sunken patio Number 20, which is Ber-exempt, had a new boiler installed in recent months and the garden level has a damp-proof course to protect against moisture. It is on the market through DNG with a guide price of €2.85 million.

Couple's shock discovery after buying 145-year-old home

This drop-dead gorgeous home in the US comes with a macabre pedigree. Ashley Berken and her wife were on the house hunt in October when they discovered a 145-year-old Victorian property within their budget, the 39-year-old told Newsweek. They couldn't believe their luck — the Wisconsin home offered enough space for their four children, two home offices and a whole lot of Old World character — all for $US305,000 ($A464,000), the New York Post reports. However, the listing failed to mention that the property was formerly a two-time funeral home. Funeral operations at the house supposedly ceased in the 1960s, according to Ms Berken. Clearly, many are intrigued by this unusual home considering her TikTok account, @thefuneralhomehouse, has close to 28,000 followers and more than 200,000 likes. 'I feel like breathing new life into this space is the perfect intended use for it,' she said in the video. One of her plans is to install a small gardening area next to a nearby window. The ornamented property boasts enchanting and surprising details throughout its upper floors, including a tin ceiling in the kitchen, intricate inlaid wood floors, a 10-foot mirror, stained glass windows, a grand staircase and sculptural light fixtures. It also has stunning millwork and original details throughout, but the real story of the home lies in the basement. The expansive subterranean floor — Ms Berken would eventually learn — held the embalming room and casket showroom. The latter of which she's considering turning into a hangout space for her children. Ms Berken told Newsweek that she wasn't aware of the home's deathly history until she noticed ramps in the garage designed for transporting bodies. A quick search of local records proved her suspicions. Still, Berken called the home 'my absolute dream come true.' The 39-year-old recalled her enduring love of the 1991 classic 'My Girl,' a film in which one of the young protagonists lives with her family in their funeral home. Parts of this story first appeared in the New York Post and was republished with permission.
