"Suddenly Posted On Social Media": Tribunal Holds RCB 'Responsible' For Bengaluru Stampede
The June 4 tragedy outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru turned out to be a big lesson for cricketing celebrations and crowd control. After the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title on June 3 in Ahmedabad, the franchise's poorly-planned celebration in Bengaluru saw 11 people losing their lives. Roughly a month after the tragedy, the Central Administrative Tribunal has put the entire blame of the incident on the IPL franchise, saying 'appropriate permissions and consent' weren't taken by the police ahead of the ceremony in the city. In its order, the Central Tribunal said: "The RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the police. Suddenly, they posted on social media platforms, and as a result of the aforesaid information, the public gathered. Because of a shortage of time, the police were unable to make the appropriate arrangements. It cannot be expected from the police that within a short time of about 12 hours, the police will make all the required arrangements." RCB Victory Parade: Today at 5 pm IST. Victory Parade will be followed by celebrations at the Chinnaswamy stadium. We request all fans to follow guidelines set by police and other authorities, so that everyone can enjoy the roadshow peacefully. Free passes (limited… — Royal Challengers Bengaluru (@RCBTweets) June 4, 2025 The tribunal empathised with the city's police officials, who were also blamed for the tragedy earlier, saying they aren't superhumans who could make arrangements to manage 5-7 lakh people in about 12 hours. "Police personnel are also human beings. They are neither 'God' nor magicians. They do not have the magic powers like 'Alladin ka Chirag' (Alladin's lamp) that they can fulfill any wish by rubbing a finger." As the fans awaited final announcement on the celebrations, the Bengaluru police said that no open bus parade will be held in the city because of traffic and other issues. The police also advised fans to remain disciplined. Yet, lakhs of people gathered within hours of the RCB team reaching Bengaluru from Ahmedabad. Since the tragedy, RCB have announced an aid of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede.

RCB 'prima facie responsible' for June 4 stampede; no police permission taken, says Tribunal
In a scathing observation, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) on Tuesday held Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) 'prima facie responsible' for the tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which claimed the lives of 11 people. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The crowd surge occurred during the team's IPL 2025 title celebration parade, which had drawn thousands of fans to central Bengaluru. The CAT noted that RCB did not seek prior approval from law enforcement authorities before announcing the event. 'The RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the Police,' the Tribunal stated. The franchise's sudden announcement on social media triggered a massive turnout, with estimates suggesting over three lakh people gathered near MG Road and Cubbon Road. 'Therefore, prima facie it appears that the RCB is responsible for the gathering of about three to five lakh people,' the Tribunal observed, as quoted by PTI. The Tribunal was critical of the short notice given to the police, which left little time for crowd control or safety preparations. 'Because of shortage of time on 04.06.2026, the Police was unable to do the appropriate arrangements. Sufficient time was not given to the Police. Suddenly, the RCB created the aforesaid type of nuisance without any prior permission.' RCB Victory Parade Turns Into Nightmare; Fan Frenzy Outside Chinnaswamy Stadium Kills 7+ | Bengaluru In a particularly strong rebuke, the Tribunal remarked, 'Police personnel are also human beings. They are neither 'God' (Bhagwan) nor Magician and also not having the magic powers like 'Alladdin ka Chirag' which was able to fulfil any wish only by rubbing a finger." Poll Should there be stricter regulations for large public events? Yes, definitely No, it would hinder celebrations Only for sporting events RCB are yet to release an official response to the Tribunal's comments. The fallout from the June 4 incident has already seen the resignation of Karnataka State Cricket Association secretary A. Shankar and treasurer Jayaram, with charges pressed against both RCB and KSCA.

The multi-club ownership regulations do not allow clubs under the same ownership compete in the same European competition, and American businessman John Textor holds a stake in both Palace and Lyon. Palace qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup last season while Lyon reached the competition by finishing sixth in Ligue 1 but have since been relegated to Ligue 2 by French football's financial watchdog (DNCG). Lyon are appealing the decision, which came following an audit of the club's finances, and UEFA's Club Financial Control Body will now await the outcome of the appeal before making its decision. UEFA and Lyon reached a settlement agreement over the club's breach of the financial sustainability requirements, and as part of the settlement, Lyon agreed on their exclusion from European competition should the DNCG confirm their relegation. League of Ireland club Drogheda United lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this month over their exclusion from the Conference League, after falling foul of the multi-club ownership rules.
