How Sanjeev Kumar, A Former Stuntman, Landed His Breakthrough Role In Dilip Kumar's Sunghursh

New Delhi: In the late 1960s, Sanjeev Kumar was a struggling actor grappling with self-doubt and uncertainty. His breakthrough came with Sunghursh (1968) but behind that big break was an unlikely hero, his loyal secretary, Jamnadas. The plot of Sunghursh revolved around Bhawani Prasad (Jayant), a criminal who feigns his identity as a holy man and is separated from his wife and son. He then forcibly takes his grandson named Kundan (Dilip Kumar who played the adult role) along with him, to follow in his footsteps. Sanjeev Kumar played the role of Dwarka Prasad who tries to end a feud between two families. A veteran documentary filmmaker told NDTV on condition of anonymity that director HS Rawail was on the lookout for someone who could hold his own opposite the great Dilip Kumar. But most known faces turned down the role, afraid of being overshadowed. Sanjeev Kumar, still carrying the tag of a former stuntman, believed he was right for the part, but he didn't have the courage to approach Rawail himself. Instead, he sent Jamnadas. Jamnadas became Sanjeev's tireless ambassador. He went to Rawail's office repeatedly with photographs, trying to convince him to consider Sanjeev. Rawail, annoyed by the persistence, eventually banned him from entering. Still, Jamnadas didn't give up. He told Sanjeev that Rawail had just been busy and quietly came up with another plan. He reached out to director Ramesh Saigal an old friend of Rawail and his regular card partner. On the pretext of casting for another project, Saigal showed Rawail reels of Sanjeev's unreleased work. Watching those clips, Rawail finally saw what Jamnadas had seen all along. He realized this was the same actor then known as Harihar Jariwala whose stage performance had once left a deep impression on him. Rawail was convinced, Sanjeev was his man. The shoot at Famous Studio in Mahalaxmi was a turning point. Sanjeev's very first scene opposite Dilip Kumar a silent, high-stakes chess game was so flawless, it didn't need a single retake. When the film released, industry rumours flew about Dilip Kumar allegedly refusing to work with Sanjeev again. But the veteran actor dismissed them, saying he'd only turned down weak scripts. Years later, the two worked together in Vidhaata (1982). The most touching moment came later, when Rawail told Sanjeev how fiercely Jamnadas had fought for him despite being thrown out of his office. From that day on, he never referred to him as just Jamnadas he became "Jamnadas ji". It's a timeless story of perseverance, loyalty, and the quiet champion who never stopped believing in his friend's dream.

Padmini revealed that despite taking input from her family, Shraddha ultimately trusts her own instincts. The 'Vidhaata' actress shared, 'Advice, in the sense Shraddha discusses. like with my sister Tejaswini, her mom Shivangi, me, her father, and, of course, also my husband. Padmini's elder sister, Shivangi Kolhapure, who was also an actress, is married to veteran actor Shakti Kapoor and is the mother of actors Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhanth Kapoor. 'My husband is a producer, I'm an actress, but we never had those typical dreams of forcing him to be an actor. He showed interest gradually, and we supported him.' Padmini stressed the importance of independence and hard work, sharing that her son was sent to Strasbourg to understand the challenges beyond glamour. 'I keep telling him this job isn't easy. It's blood, sweat, and tears,' she remarked, referencing her own experiences and the hard work she's seen from other actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Anil Kapoor.

She reminisced about shooting during rain often meant hastily seeking cover under a tree or an umbrella, highlighting the lack of proper facilities for women balancing motherhood with demanding shooting schedules. The veteran actress shared, "No doubt, it is definitely more conducive now for women because, you know, you have the comforts of a vanity van. And, you know, there are proper facilities-like, in those days, if it rained during shootings, one would run under a tree or a big umbrella. Now, you have tents and all those comforts, which are really important. I mean, there are vans with toilets, and back then it was different. Right? So, yeah, there is a lot that has improved, but a lot still needs to be done." Director Jabs Deepika Padukone for 'Taking Motherhood Seriously' Amidst Dua's Arrival She added, "Being a SINTA Senior Vice President, we have also met with the Labour Minister. And we've kind of told him about the challenges the industry, the women, the actors, and the members face. And they, you know, they're looking into it so positively. We met the Labour Minister, and he was so patient. There are a lot of things they didn't know, really - you know, the challenges actors are facing. That era was different. This era is different. You know, one has to evolve, one has to go with the trends. Technology has advanced so much." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Padmini Kolhapure also touched on the rapid advancement of technology in filmmaking, contrasting the past with the present. While earlier, a cameraman's shot was the final take, today's digital technology allows directors and cinematographers to review footage instantly on monitors and make changes in post-production, offering greater creative flexibility. Padmini touched upon the challenges working mothers face in the industry amid the ongoing feud between and director . The tension reportedly arose after Deepika was removed from his film "Spirit," following claims that she was deemed 'unprofessional' for insisting on an eight-hour workday and specific conditions, reflecting her responsibilities as a new mother. Reports suggest that Deepika's request to limit her daily shooting hours was not well received by the filmmaker, highlighting the ongoing struggle for better accommodations for working mothers in cinema.
