At 68, This Workout Is Helping Me Prepare for a 100-Mile Walk in Portugal

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." In September, I'm going to be walking approximately 100 miles of the Camino de Santiago, from Porto to Vigo, in Portugal. Last October, I completed the Spanish portion of the route (that's me in the photo above). It was 78 miles and took six days. To stay strong and fit enough to complete the upcoming journey, I know I need to be strength training. I'm also eager to improve my bone density—something I keep tabs on through regular DEXA scans—because I have osteoporosis. In addition to upping my protein and calcium intake through my diet, my doctor told me regular resistance training is important. That's what inspired me to try Prevention's Fundamental Strength Workout, designed for women over 50 in particular. If you, like me, have osteoporosis or any other pre-existing conditions, talk to your doctor before trying any new exercise routine. I'm not totally new to strength training: I have a deck of cards that I bought on Amazon with suggested exercises for all the body parts—you just pick a half-dozen of them, flip them over, and you have a workout for the day. I've been doing this for over a year, but haven't done a structured strength training workout, other than a handful of group fitness classes, in a while. My game plan: I started doing the Functional Strength Workout in April three to four times a week. All you need is a pair of dumbbells and a chair. I still mixed in my playing card exercises as well. I also do Tai Chi workout videos on Youtube a couple of times a week. I'm 68, I'm at a point now where all I read about in my age bracket is like, 'You're going to fall, you're going to break your hip, you're going to break your arm, you shouldn't be on a ladder, you shouldn't do this or that. I liked that this workout plan acknowledged the realities of aging without screaming at you to watch it! You're an old person now. It's also very accessible. The other day, I thought I was going to go to the gym, but I didn't have time. So I just took 15 minutes in an open room in the office to get it in. I'm only using five-pound dumbbells which I keep at my desk. My favorite move was Heel-to-Toe Walk. At first I was wobbling all over and then I said 'oh, I see what the key is—not to look at your feet, but to look forward or focus on something else.' I had an appointment with a functional medicine doctor a few weeks ago and I mentioned to her that I was doing this exercise. She's very fit and she got up and tried to do it, and she was wobbling all over. Balance is so important for older people, and I've found that mine has improved through doing this move. I can even stand on one foot while I brush my teeth now without falling over. I felt myself improving in other ways as the weeks went by. In addition to the Heel-to-Toe Walk, the Chair Sit-to-Stand also got easier with time. I really think I could do more reps of both of those moves. Overall, it's a good routine to keep you moving so that life isn't as hard. My tip to other women around my age trying this—or any other strength training routine: Just keep at it. If you feel a little wobbly or shaky, just keep doing it. Sooner or later it's going to come more naturally. At the end of the day, I think this is a great jump start plan for people who are new to exercise or who haven't strength trained in a while. I'll definitely continue to incorporate a few of these moves into my routine. One of my doctors suggested adding more weight to my workouts so I think that's what I'll aim for next. But my biggest goal is my upcoming walk in Portugal—and I'm feeling strong and ready! You Might Also Like Can Apple Cider Vinegar Lead to Weight Loss? Defending champion England is aiming to retain its continental crown, and Germany is hoping for a record-extending ninth title. Euro 2025 kicks off on Wednesday of next week with the first two of 31 matches to be staged across eight cities in Switzerland. The Lionesses then made it all the way to the final at the 2023 World Cup but were beaten by Spain. Germany, which lost to England after extra time in the 2022 final, won six straight editions of the women's Euros from 1995 to 2013 and has lifted the trophy in eight of the 13 finals overall. The German women's team has also won two World Cup titles. Advertisement What is the format? The tournament begins with four groups of four teams in a round-robin format. The top two teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, followed by overall goal difference and then goals scored. Premier League flop to get STATUE outside proposed World Cup stadium - as star's club labels him the 'best player' in their history

A Premier League flop who scored no goals in the division is set to be remembered for years to come with a statue. The striker was ranked the third-worst player in Liverpool's history - admittedly rather harshly and with recency bias - after struggling to adapt to the language and culture. But Iago Aspas is a legend for Celta Vigo and their president has revealed plans to build an effigy outside their Estadio Balaidos. That could see his imposing figure staring down at England stars as the ground is a proposed venue for the 2030 World Cup, hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Aspas moved to Anfield for £6million in 2013 but his only goal in 15 appearances came in the FA Cup against Oldham. He was then shipped out to Sevilla on loan for his second season on Liverpool 's books before moving back to Celta. A homeboy to the heart, Aspas had felt homesick when he moved the 16 kilometre distance from his fishing village of Moana to Vigo, so switching country was always going to be a struggle. Liverpool even allowed him to invite a group of his best friends over to help him acclimatise but that didn't help him integrate or crack the language. It's a different story for Celta, though. In the right environment, Aspas is a prolific forward. The striker, 37, has now scored 214 goals for them across 524 appearances. 'When we were in Manchester, there was a statue of Bobby Charlton in front of the stadium (...) The same will happen here with Iago Aspas,' said club president Marian Mourino. Mourino also hailed him as 'the best player in the club's history'. His form in LaLiga has seen him capped 20 times by Spain down the years and he has scored six goals for them. He scored against England on his Spain debut at Wembley in 2016 in a 2-2 draw. An overriding memory for Liverpool fans, though, may be of Aspas' woeful corner against Chelsea in 2014 in the game that killed off their title hopes. The infamous corner came as Liverpool were chasing the game in stoppage time. It needed to go into the danger area instead it went straight to Willlan on the edge of the box leaving exasperated team-mates gesturing, arms outstretched.

Drug suppliers using 'official vehicle' held

The Defence police claimed to have arrested two individuals involved in the sale, purchase, and use of narcotics, seizing high-quality drugs and illegal weapons during a raid. Among the items recovered were the British-brand 'Jungle Boy' weed, hashish, illegal arms, and a double-cabin Vigo vehicle bearing a 'fake government number plate (GBA 786) and police lights'. According to the police, the raid was conducted on intelligence-based information. The arrested suspects are British-Pakistani national Sulaiman Ali Memon and his accomplice, Shahriyar. During the interrogation, the suspects revealed that the vehicle was actually part of the official protocol fleet for an MPA from Mastung area of Balochistan and had been rented under the name of Sulaiman Ali Memon. The police are now investigating the vehicle's rental records and are working to identify any additional accomplices or facilitators linked to the suspects. Meanwhile, the Darakhshan police have arrested a woman, allegedly involved in supplying drugs in association with her sons, and seized her vehicle. The police on suspicion stopped a car and recovered weed. The police arrested the woman in the car, identified as Mujahida Khalid Mansoori, the mother of notorious drug dealers Rabi Mansoori and Daniyal Mansoori. The group was active in supplying drugs in DHA and adjoining areas.
