India U-19 Day 1: Vaibhav Suryavanshi Exits Early But Ayush Matre Smashes Century
The Indian U-19 team dominated Day 1 of the first Youth Test against England with Ayush Matre's century and strong support from Vihan Malhotra, Abhiyan Kundu, and Rahul Kumar.
The Indian U-19 team stormed back into red-ball form with a statement-making performance on Day 1 of the first Youth Test against England. After a forgettable white-ball series, it was skipper Ayush Matre who flipped the script with a commanding century that set the tone for a dominant day with the bat.
India finished stumps at a formidable 450 for 7 in just 88 overs, a scoring rate more reminiscent of a one-day match than a four-day Test.
All eyes were on Vaibhav Suryavanshi, India's attacking opener who had lit up the recent ODI series with his explosive stroke-play. But hopes of another highlight reel knock were dashed early. He fell cheaply for just 14, leaving India wobbling slightly after an unsteady start.
Then came the rescue act. Captain Ayush Matre, under pressure after his own lean patch in the ODIs, stepped up in style. He smashed 102 off 115 balls, peppering the boundary with 14 fours and clearing it twice. His partnership with Vihan Malhotra (67) steadied the innings—together they added 173 for the second wicket.
But the real carnage came later. After the top order had done its job, Abhiyan Kundu and Rahul Kumar took the attack to England's bowlers with a brutal 179-run stand for the fifth wicket, scored in just 27.4 overs.
By stumps, Ambarish was unbeaten on 31, with Henil Patel giving him company on 6. England's bowlers were left looking for answers after an exhausting day in the field.
