Chance for Dragons to settle the score with Super Gillies

Chepauk Super Gillies and Dindigul Dragons will square off for a berth in the final of the TNPL when the two sides meet in Qualifier 2 at the NPR College ground here on Friday. Super Gillies have been the standout team of the tournament, winning all seven league matches, but was given a reality check in Qualifier 1 by IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, as they slumped to a chastening 79-run defeat. Dragons, the reigning champions, meanwhile, produced a clinical performance against Trichy Grand Cholas, winning by six wickets in the Eliminator and will have a spring in their step going into the knockout clash. For Super Gillies, the loss to Tamizhans exposed the team's over-reliance on B. Aparajith and Vijay Shankar to do the heavy lifting with the bat. The four-time champions will need the other batters to make meaningful contributions and use their batting depth to get back to winning ways. Dragons, in contrast, will look to repeat their feat from last year, when they won three playoff contests and clinched their maiden title. The 'home' team displayed its superior bowling prowess, led by skipper R. Ashwin, whose all-round performance (3/28 & 83) helped brush aside Grand Cholas. However, there is a concern surrounding pace spearhead Sandeep Warrier who walked off at the start of his third over clutching his hamstring. During their previous meeting, Super Gillies prevailed by eight runs after Dragons made a mess of the chase from a position of strength. Ashwin's men now have a chance to settle the score and keep their title defence campaign alive.

Super Gillies finish league stage on a perfect note

The Chepauk Super Gillies juggernaut continued to steamroll opponents and made it a perfect seven in the league stage of TNPL-9, beating Siechem Madurai Panthers by six wickets (DLS method) in its final group encounter at the NPR College Ground here on Saturday. The victory meant CSG became the second team, after Albert Tuti Patriots in 2017, to win all its league matches in the competition. Chasing 157, every Super Gillies top-order batter stroked valuable cameos to keep the asking rate in check. The four-time champion was cruising at 71 for three in 9.2 overs when the players walked off due to insect infestation. Once play resumed, Super Gillies's revised target was 114 in 14 overs. Vijay Shankar and N. Jagadeesan quickly hit a few huge sixes and closed out the game with seven balls to spare. The victory, though, was set up by CSG's bowlers Vijay Shankar (three for 23) and M. Silambarasan (two for 19), whose miserly spells restricted the Madurai outfit to just 156 for seven after the match was delayed by an hour due to rain. Skipper N.S. Chaturved and M.A. Atheeq Ur Rahman gave the Panthers a great platform, taking their side to 60 for two in the PowerPlay. Game-changer A late surge from Ashwin and Gurjapneet took Panthers past 150, but it was not enough, as the 2018 champion crashed out of the tournament following its fifth defeat of the season. The scores: Siechem Madurai Panthers 156/7 in 20 overs (N.S. Chaturved 31, M.A. Atheeq Ur Rahman 41, M. Ashwin 38, Vijay Shankar 3/23, M. Silambarasan 2/19) lost to Chepauk Super Gillies 114/4 in 12.5 overs (M. Ayush 2/20). CSG won by six wickets on DLS method.

Aparajith sizzles as Super Gillies edges Grand Cholas in a thriller

Skipper B. Aparajith top-scored with 63 (40b, 1x4, 7x6) and stitched a 106-run third-wicket stand (68 balls) with Vijay Shankar (59, 46b, 6x4, 1x6) as Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) beat Trichy Grand Cholas (TGC) by four runs in a thriller in their Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match at the Chennai Super Kings ground here on Monday. Vijay Shankar's was a streaky, struggling innings in contrast to Aparajith's assured knock. Aparajith smashed seven sixes - one straight off left-arm spinner Ganesh Moorthi, and six on the leg side. He hit medium-pacer Easwaran for back-to-back sixes to long- on, and pulled left-arm spinner Sanjay Yadav for two sixes to deep midwicket in the same over. Vijay Shankar, on the other hand, was dropped on 13 by Waseem Ahmed at deep midwicket off medium-pacer Rajkumar. He edged three fours and failed to connect at least four times. He brought up his maiden TNPL fifty with authority, though, hitting a slower ball wide of long on for a six off Easwaran. The 82-run second-wicket partnership between captain J. Suresh Kumar (63, 40b, 6x4, 2x6) and J. Kousik (45, 33b, 2x4, 3x6) was the highlight of Grand Cholas' 179-run chase. The duo struck three sixes in an over off left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas - both hitting to deep midwicket once, besides Kousik hitting to long on. CSG medium-pacer Prem Kumar (three for 42) accounted for both of them, getting Kousik bowled while Suresh Kumar holed out to Dinesh Raj at deep midwicket. CSG's debutant left-arm seamer Rohith Suthar successfully defended 11 in the last over. The scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 178/5 in 20 overs (B. Aparajith 63, Vijay Shankar 59) bt Trichy Grand Cholas 174/7 in 20 overs (J. Suresh Kumar 63, J. Kousik 45, Prem Kumar 3/42). Toss: Grand Cholas. Tuesday's match: Lyca Kovai Kings vs Idream Tiruppur Tamizhans (7.15 p.m.).

Swapnil Singh's all-round show blows away Royal Kings

Swapnil Singh produced a fine all-round performance, first a brilliant 14-ball 45 (2x4, 5x6) followed by a miserly spell (4-0-26-2) to help Chepauk Super Gillies thrash Nellai Royal Kings by 41 runs in a TNPL-9 league match at the Sri Ramakrishna College ground here on Monday. It was the second successive win for Super Gillies who are leading the table with four points from two matches. Asked to bat first, Super Gillies amassed 212 for seven — the fourth-highest total in the league — riding on useful cameos from four of the top-six batters. Opener K. Aashiq (54), appearing in his second match, scored a breezy half-century and added 83 for the second wicket alongside skipper B. Aparajith (41) to set a solid foundation. The left-hander looked compact while driving and cutting the pacers. Against the spinners, he lofted cleanly down the ground and He got to his half-century with a swept six over square leg off left-arm spinner Sachin Rathi. However, it was Vijay Shankar (47 n.o.) and Swapnil, the experienced campaigners, who gave the final flourish, raining sixes and plundering 78 runs in the last five. Vijay Shankar first took on Rathi, hitting two sixes and a four in the 16th over. Swapnil then joined the party and used the long handle to brutal effect, smashing pacer M. Udhaya Kumar for a hat-trick of sixes in the 18th over. By the time he was out in the final over, CSG had crossed 200. In reply, Royal Kings' chase was never on track and was reduced to 46 for three with Swapnil striking twice in the sixth over and could never recover from it. The scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 212/7 in 20 overs (K. Aashiq 54, B. Aparajith 41, Vijay Shankar 47 n.o., Swapnil Singh 45, Sonu Yadav 2/42, V. Yudheeswaran 3/37) bt Nellai Royal Kings 171/9 in 20 overs (Arun Karthik 51, Muhammed Adnan Khan 48, Abhishek Tanwar 3/33, Swapnil 2/26, M. Silambarasan 2/18). Toss: NRK. Tuesday's match: SKM Salem Spartans vs Trichy Grand Cholas (7.15 p.m.).

TNPL 2025, ITT vs CSG: Comedy of errors helps Chepauk Super Gillies steal two runs amid confusion

By News Desk Published on June 6, 2025, 21:48 IST Chepauk Super Gillies found an unexpected moment of luck during the 7th over of their chase against IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans in the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025 match at Coimbatore on Thursday evening. At the end of seven overs, Chepauk Super Gillies stood at 71/2 in pursuit of a target of 174. The equation read 103 runs needed from 78 balls. Vijay Shankar (2 off 2 balls) and Baba Aparajith (15 off 14 balls) were at the crease when a comedy of errors unfolded on the final ball of the over. Sai Kishore, who had just dismissed Mokit Hariharan earlier in the over, delivered the last ball to Vijay Shankar. Shankar played the ball with soft hands and called for a quick single. The fielder came in and attempted an underarm throw at the keeper's end, hitting the stumps directly. However, the ball ricocheted off the stumps and rolled towards the third-man boundary. Both batters were caught mid-pitch in a classic case of yes-no hesitation, unsure whether to attempt a second run on the overthrow. Meanwhile, the wicketkeeper quickly retrieved the ball and fired it towards the bowler's end. In another twist, Sai Kishore failed to collect the throw cleanly, giving the batters enough time to complete the second run. The chaotic sequence brought some light-hearted relief to the contest and helped Chepauk Super Gillies inch ahead with an additional run. At the end of the over, Chepauk Super Gillies were 71 for 2 in 7 overs with Baba Aparajith on 15 (14) and Vijay Shankar on 2 (2). Sai Kishore completed his over with figures of 2-0-15-1.
