Drive against illegal sale of drugs: Gujarat Police checks 7,575 medical stores across state

The Gujarat Police, under the guidance of DGP Vikas Sahay, launched a statewide checking campaign, and checked 7,575 medical stores, to curb the misuse and illegal sale of narcotic drugs. The campaign aimed to ensure compliance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, specifically targeting the sale of prescription-only medicines without a valid prescription, excessive storage of prohibited substances, and unauthorized sale of intoxicating substances. The drive was conducted in collaboration with the Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), said a statement from the Gujarat Home Department. The drive focused on medical stores located near educational institutions, said sources. Strict action was taken if a medical store was found to be selling drugs like Amidopyrine, Phenacetin, Nialamide, Chloramphenicol, Phenylephrine, Furazolidone, Oxyphenbutazone and Metronidazole without prescription. DGP Vikas Sahay in a video statement said, ' The drive to check the medical shops, especially the ones near schools and colleges, for illegal sale of drugs was organised following a meeting conducted by MoS Home Harsh Sanghavi on July 9. The drive was held in collaboration with the FDCA.' Over 1,600 teams checked a total of 7,575 medical stores across the state during which irregularities were found in several stores and cases were filed against them, said Sahay. He also appealed to the public to inform the police if there is any illegal activity going on in medical stores in their vicinity. 'We are eager to act on any such information. The intention isn't to harass anyone, but to fight against illegal activities,' said the DGP. A total of 235 cases were filed against 54 people by the Ahmedabad City Police after checking 880 medical stores. Of these 178 cases were filed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 53 under the Juvenile Justice Act, two under the NDPS Act, and two for possession of e-cigarettes. A total of 333 stores were checked in Surat city, where 93 codeine syrups were seized from one medical store and 15 codeine syrups and five alprazolam bottles from another medical store, said the police. In Valsad, 282 medical stores were checked, in Patan 61, 184 in Navsari, 66 in Jamnagar, 258 places in Bharuch district and 23 in Dangs district. Checking was also carried out in 129 medical stores in Dahod district, 112 in Panchmahal district and 317 in Gandhinagar district among others.

13 tadipaar in a day: Gujarat Police passed 1,000 externment orders in last two and a half months, says DGP

Between March 15 and May 31, Gujarat Police passed more than 1,000 externment orders, averaging almost 13 tadipaar orders a day. The action taken in the last two and a half months or 77 days is part of steps being taken against alleged miscreants in the state under its whole-of-government approach in light of rising street violence. According to Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay, who received a six-month extension to his tenure from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) earlier this month, the state police had taken various steps, ranging from demolition of illegal structures to snapping illegal power connections to preventive detention. Sahay was speaking at the headquarters of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) after the completion of Monthly Crime Conference for May 2025, which was delayed after the June 12 plane crash. Sahay said in the last two and a half months, after he passed orders to take action against miscreants in 100 days, a total of 586 illegal constructions and encroachments have been demolished across the state with help from civic bodies. Further, 1,857 illegal electricity connections had also been severed during this period. With regard to putting criminals behind bars, DGP Sahay said, 'The police have filed 434 proposals in various courts asking them to cancel the bail granted to such persons. More than 1,000 'tadipaar' externment orders had also been passed in this period.' The police have also invoked Gujarat Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act against more than 800 people, said Sahay. Regarding narcotics, DGP Sahay said that just like PASA in other criminal cases, there is provision for preventive detention in narcotics cases, which is known as PIT NDPS ( Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act. 'We discussed this today and in the last fortnight, 17 people have been placed under detention under this rule,' he said. 'In cases of crimes committed for financial gains, we have done scrutiny of the bank accounts of more than 200 accused persons. This was done by cyber crime police,' said Sahay. During the crime conference, the chief of Gujarat Police said the integrated 112 helpline will soon become operationalised in Gujarat. The other main point of discussion was regarding coastal security, coastal patrolling, and the review of coastal police stations and marine task force. The work of the Special Operations Group (SOG) was also reviewed and officials discussed ways to make it better.

Sahay gets 6-month extension as Gujarat DGP

Amid intense speculation over the appointment of the new Gujarat top cop, the state government has extended the tenure of current Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay by six months. For the past few days, discussions were underway about potential successors, while preparations had even begun in Gandhinagar for Sahay's farewell ceremony. This had fuelled certainty about his departure. However, the narrative took a turn on June 30, when the government officially announced his extension. With this decision, Vikas Sahay will continue serving as the Gujarat police chief till December 31, 2025, ending all succession buzz. BJP silent prayer behind AAP's bypoll victory? Aam Aadmi Party's Gopal Italia emerged victorious in the Visavadar assembly by-election; however, political circles are abuzz with claims that the win, though on AAP's ticket, was engineered by the BJP. Commentators pointed out that the BJP's strategic decision to field Kirit Patel — an unpopular face within his own party — allegedly gave Italia a clear sight of victory. This, many believe, was a deliberate move to split the Congress votes and keep AAP relevant. In the 2022 assembly elections, the AAP had helped weaken Congress, enabling BJP's 156-seat sweep. Analysts suggest the BJP's hidden aim is to sustain the AAP as a 'vote-cutter' ahead of 2027. Expelled MLA alleges AAP-BJP nexus After being expelled from the Aam Aadmi Party, Botad MLA Umesh Makwana has launched a fierce attack on his former party, alleging a secret alliance between the AAP and BJP. He claimed Gujarat AAP is functioning under BJP influence, saying, 'The remote control of AAP is in Kamlam (BJP headquarters In Gujarat).' Makwana was suspended minutes after he resigned as AAP's legislative leader, following the party's Visavadar bypoll win. Calling the suspension 'unilateral', he demanded a meeting with party supremo Arvind Kejriwal. Refusing to quit as MLA, Makwana vowed to complete his term and expose Gujarat and Delhi AAP leaders' alleged political ties with BJP. Dilip Singh Kshatriya Our correspondent in Gujarat dilipsingh@

On ‘retirement day', Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay receives six-month extension

On the day he was supposed to superannuate, Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay received a six-month extension to his tenure on Monday. Besides being the Director General of Police (DGP), Sahay is also the Inspector General (IG) of the state. With the extension order, Sahay will remain the chief of the Gujarat Police till December 31. The order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), referencing an Office Memorandum (OM) from the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated, 'The ACC has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for extension of service to Vikas Sahay, IPS (GJ-1989), DGP Gujarat for a period of six months beyond his date of superannuation i.e. June 30, 2025, in relaxation of Rule 16 (1) of AIS (All India Services)… as a special case in public interest.' Sahay, who was earlier posted as DGP Training, was appointed in-charge DGP of Gujarat Police with effect from February 1, 2023, and appointed to the job full-time on March 1, 2023. Notably, Sahay is the third consecutive DGP of Gujarat Police to receive an extension. His immediate predecessor, DGP Ashish Bhatia (1985 batch), who was appointed chief of Gujarat Police with effect from August 1, 2020, and was set to retire on May 31, 2022, had received an 8-month extension till January 31, 2023. Similarly, Bhatia's predecessor, DGP Shivanand Jha, who was appointed to the top post in April 2018, and was supposed to superannuate on April 30, 2020, was given a 3-month extension till July 31, 2020.

Curiosity Sparks Chaos As Crowds Swarm Crash Site, Gujarat Top Cop Urges Restraint

Last Updated: The presence of civilians in the area could interfere with crucial forensic and aviation investigations being conducted by both Indian and international teams. The Ahmedabad flight crash turned into a nightmare for several families who would never see their loved ones returning back home. Three days after the horrific accident on June 12, the relief and rescue operation at the site still continues. Amid the ongoing investigation and rescue operation, the site has been sealed to preserve the evidence. The administration has also urged the citizens and onlookers to refrain from approaching the crash site. Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay said in a public statement, 'We are grateful to all local residents and volunteers who assisted in immediate rescue operations. However, over the past two days, the crash site has been cordoned off to allow investigators to collect critical evidence. We request everyone to stay away from the area to avoid any disruption in the investigation process." The administrative statement comes as curious onlookers have swarmed in from Mehsana, Patan, Bharuch-not to help, but to see the crash site. Rooftops in the densely packed Meghaninagar neighborhood have turned into makeshift viewing galleries, resembling rural fairgrounds. Locals say their homes are being invaded by strangers pleading for access to terraces, verandas, even windows-all for one perfect photo of the debris. The movement of civilians in the area could compromise with forensic and aviation-related findings being gathered by Indian and international teams. Quoting the DGP's message, Minister Harsh Sanghavi posted on social media platform X, 'Items recovered from the crash site will be carefully documented and returned to the families of the deceased. Our teams are working meticulously to identify and safeguard these personal effects." He also also stressed that the government is aware with the emotional sentiments attached to the belongings and is committed to returning them 'as soon as possible". The death toll in the crash has climbed to 271-the 241 passengers and crew on the plane and the remaining people on the ground, mostly in the hostel building. Authorities have matched 47 DNA samples from the Ahmedabad plane crash site so far, with 44 families contacted and 24 bodies handed over to relatives. Officials said 22 death certificates have already been issued. However, the total death toll remains uncertain, as officials caution that DNA work is still ongoing.
