AP cops seize 11 cr in boxes from city farmhouse in liquor scam raid

Vijayawada: In a pre-dawn raid on a farmhouse in Hyderabad, the AP special investigation team (SIT) on Wednesday seized Rs 11 crore concealed in boxes, allegedly linked to the multi-crore liquor scam in Andhra Pradesh. The raid was conducted at the farmhouse located at Kacharam village in Shamshabad in the city following confession by a businessman, Varun Purushottam, one of the key accused in the case. The SIT is investigating the alleged liquor scam that occurred during the YSRCP govt between 2019 and 2024. As many as 40 people including a few senior politicians have been named in the Rs 3,500 crore scam. According to SIT sources, Varun, who was taken into custody, admitted to having hidden the cash in June 2024 in the farmhouse following the instructions of the prime accused, Raj Kasireddy, who was IT advisor to former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, and Booneti Chanakya, accused No. 8 in the case. The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the money laundering angle in the case, has sought details of the money seizure from the farmhouse, from the AP SIT. A senior SIT official said Varun was examined and his confession was recorded. Later, he was arrested. The SIT is likely to take Chanakya into custody again for further interrogation to examine the role of Vinay in assisting with the concealment of the cash and other related activities. Further questioning is underway to establish the source of the funds and to identify others involved in the money laundering and storage process. This seizure marks a significant development in the multi-crore liquor scam. Preliminary SIT findings suggest irregularities amounting to over Rs 3,500 crore. Several high-ranking individuals, including YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy, have already been arrested for their alleged role, and the SIT is believed to have gathered crucial information implicating key political figures. The agency continues to conduct raids at various locations in Hyderabad linked to the accused. Officials expect more disclosures in the coming days, including possible arrests of influential figures involved in the operation and cover-up of the alleged liquor syndicate. Kasireddy files affidavit in court Meanwhile, Raj Kasireddy filed an affidavit in a court in Vijayawada on Wednesday, denying any connection to the Rs 11 crore seized by the SIT. He stated that the allegations made by the SIT were baseless and untrue. He clarified that the farmhouse owner, Teegala Vijayananda Reddy, son of Bali Reddy, operates multiple businesses, including an engineering college, hospitals, and diagnostic centres, with a turnover running into hundreds of crores. Kasireddy emphasised that neither he nor his wife has any significant involvement in these ventures. He said that his wife holds only a minimal stake in Arete Hospital and has no further connection to Teegala Vijayananda Reddy's businesses. Kasireddy said, "The money seized by the SIT has no relation to me whatsoever." He further stated that there is a deliberate conspiracy to prevent him from securing bail. The Scam According to the chargesheet filed by the SIT, a system of kickbacks was in place where favoured companies allegedly paid bribes in exchange for preferential treatment in liquor supply and sales, causing a significant loss to the state govt. The alleged kickbacks, reportedly amounting to around Rs 3,500 crore, were collected from distillery companies and channelled through a network of individuals, shell companies, and possibly through hawala transactions both domestically and internationally. Popular liquor brands were allegedly phased out from the market, creating space for new, local brands, which in turn were reportedly favoured under the system. The chargesheet also mentioned YS Jagan Mohan Reddy as a "final recipient" of kickbacks, though he is not currently named as an accused.

Meet man who was once a boxer, later changed his field due to…, became a famous actor, is still single because of…, he is…

In the noisy world of fame and fanfare, some actors don't need billboards or PR machinery to be remembered. Rahul Bose is one of them. An actor, athlete, director, and social worker—he's quietly carved his own space in Indian cinema without chasing stardom. The man behind the performances Rahul was born on July 27, 1967. He got into acting pretty early—just 16—when a school play sparked something in him. While his first film, The Perfect Murder (1988), went under the radar, it was English August (1994) that made people sit up and take notice. Over the years, roles in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Chameli, and Shaurya proved he wasn't here to play it safe—he was here to leave a mark. No marriage, no regrets What makes Rahul even more intriguing is his personal life. At just 18, when most are still figuring life out, he decided he'd never marry. Not because he didn't believe in love—but because he simply didn't feel the need to settle down. That decision, rooted in conviction, has stood firm even today. At 57, Rahul remains single—by choice. There's more than just cinema Beyond the camera, he's a man of many hats. He boxed his way to a silver medal during his school years and even trained in rugby. He's written, directed, and spoken on issues close to his heart—from child welfare to gender equality. His real-life grit often reflects in his onscreen characters—quiet, intense, and honest. And then, there's Vinay Pathak Interestingly, another underrated gem shares his birthday—Vinay Pathak. Known for turning simple roles into unforgettable performances, Vinay has made us laugh, cry, and think. Films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry, and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi show just how natural and effortless he is. Vinay might not flood your social media feed, but watch him on stage or screen, and you'll get why fans adore him. Much like Rahul, his charm lies in subtlety and sincerity. Neither Rahul nor Vinay chases the limelight. But when they're on screen, you notice. Their craft doesn't shout—it stays with you. In a world that often celebrates noise, these two remind us that sometimes, it's the quietest voices that echo the loudest.

Stuck in red tape, Municipality Maternity Hospital in Dharwad cries for redevelopment

Dharwad: Municipality Maternity Hospital adjacent to the Old Central Bus Stand in Dharwad, owned by Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), was once regarded as a premier maternity care center catering to the needs of middle class and poor people, has gradually fallen into disrepair, thanks to the negligence by the authorities concerned. Efforts by Dharwad (Rural) MLA Vinay Kulkarni to get the hospital re-developed have been thwarted with the BJP-ruled HDMC rejecting a plan prepared at the instance of Vinay, citing 'technical reasons'. MLA Vinay Kulkarni had proposed a redevelopment plan a few months ago. He even secured in-principle approval from the state govt to transform the facility into a 100-bed maternity hospital. The proposal was welcomed by the public, especially by rural families who rely on the hospital for maternity care. The hospital was once a bustling facility for deliveries and now it stands in a dilapidated state with leaking roofs, crumbling walls and the ever-looming threat of structural collapse. Due to the unsafe condition of the building, HDMC suspended inpatient services four years ago. Currently, only out-patient check-ups are conducted here. The core issue At a recent public meeting in Kittur, MLA Kulkarni stated that he was willing to secure funding to upgrade the hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like After Losing Weight Kevin James Looks Like A Model 33 Bridges Undo The revamped 100-bed facility, he said, would reduce the burden on the district hospital and significantly benefit hundreds of women from rural areas who travel to Dharwad for deliveries. Initially, the HDMC responded positively to the plan. However, the state govt stipulated that it could only allocate funds for upgrading the hospital, if it was officially transferred to the health department. HDMC is not agreeing to this condition. Former mayor Ramanna Badiger, during whose tenure the proposal was first discussed, emphasised that while the HDMC supported the redevelopment, it was unwilling to hand over the ownership to the health department. "If the hospital is transferred, the corporation loses its property rights and administrative control. Instead, we urge the govt to take the hospital on lease and carry out the upgrade," he said. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali confirmed that a proposal regarding the hospital's redevelopment was under review. "It will be presented before the HDMC general body. Based on the House's decision, the proposal will be forwarded to the state govt," he said. Currently, the hospital is operating with just three doctors and three nurses. According to staff members, over 120 pregnant women visit the hospital every day for check-ups. If it is to be upgraded into a full-fledged maternity center, staff strength needs to be increased by at least five-fold. With the matter now in the hands of the new mayor Jyothi Patil who hails from Dharwad, all eyes are on HDMC.

Special Ops 2 actor Vinay Pathak: I find politicising a film morbid

Actor Vinay Pathak minces no words when it comes to sharing his thoughts on political controversies that engulf films. Citing his own film Phule, which starred Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in lead roles, Vinay criticises those who stir outrage without even watching the movie. Vinay Pathak speaks up against targeting a film by politicizing it. 'I find politicising a film morbid. If you don't like it, you don't go. (But) the majority of the people who are criticising a film haven't seen it. I can guarantee you that. It is one of the bad practices of people, ' he tells us. Phule, a biopic on Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule, initially ran into trouble with CBFC as it reportedly had caste references. Initially set to release on April 11, the film finally hit theatres on April 25. In recent times, several other films such as Dhadhak 2 and Thug Life too have faced political heat. Also Read| I am not very happy about my films going unnoticed: Vinay Pathak on his film Opium heading for NY Indian Film Fest 'A very small film (Phule) got blown out of proportion for no reason. But when it released, people loved it. Good content, good storytelling, and good cinema stay,' he adds. At 56, Vinay feels he has learnt to navigate the digital controversies and online trolls. 'I think I have cracked it!' he says triumphantly, adding, ' It's not that trolls are the new monsters. There have always been people who won't like your work and they always somehow make sure that you hear about it. I just take everything with a pinch of salt. If someone says 'I didn't like your film', then rightly so. And if that somebody has a platform of internet and they say something nasty, then be it. I am told sometimes they are bots. So, I would say that rather than being emotional about it be intelligent about it.'

A vibrant South and Southeast Asian wine bar and restaurant has opened on Rose Bay's waterfront

Rose Bay sure is a beauty, but let's be honest, she can be a little sleepy. Good news then that Rasa House – a new, vibrant South and Southeast Asian wine bar and restaurant – has opened, bringing fire, spice and all things nice to the waterfront. The 60-seat Rasa – which means flavour, aroma and taste in Indonesian, and the essence of life in Hindi – is the first venture for screenwriter Vinay Matta. But good food runs in his blood: his parents founded Sydney go-tos The Spice Room and Jewel on the Bay, which is right next door to Rasa House. Fresh, seasonal produce is key at Rasa House, which sources its seafood from The Fish Market at Maroubra, and meat from Sydney's Field to Fork. Plus, herbs – like mint, rosemary and turmeric – will come from a local community vegetable garden in Rose Bay. Menu highlights include crisp Java-style squid with kombu, burnt chilli and lime mayo; Indonesian-inspired yellowfin tuna ceviche with lemongrass, lime and bird's eye chilli; Afghan-Indian lamb shank boti with hung curd, pomegranate and slivered almonds; and Nepalese vege dumplings – momos – in a coconut gravy. 'Inspiration is all around, you just need to be willing to embrace it,' says Vinay. 'The idea for Rasa House came from my travels, my art as a screenwriter, my heritage and my parents' journey in hospitality – I've learnt a lot from them, but I'm also ready to make things my own. To do something that isn't rooted in legacy but will create a legacy of its own.' It's not just the food that's hot. The dining room is decked out in earthy tones with colourful accents and custom murals by local Sydney artist Mali Pilgrem Blasco, which bring life and warmth to the sunlit space. Plus, the alfresco seating lets you and your date soak up sparkling views of Rose Bay Marina and Shark Island. Spanning drops from Australia, Spain, France, South Africa, Germany and Morocco, the wine list is varied and interesting. Cocktail-wise, expect riffs on the classics, including a Singapore Sling, the Oriental Vieux Carré, Lychee Margarita and a Japanese Tea Old Fashioned. Got plans this weekend? Leave your house and come check out Rasa House. Find out more here. These are best wine bars in Sydney right now.
