Gill surpasses Gavaskar as Indian captain with most runs in a Test series

Gill also needs just one more century to break Gavaskar's record for most centuries by an Indian player in a Test series India's captain Shubman Gill Aditya Kaushik New Delhi Listen to This Article India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, has enjoyed a sensational run with the bat in the 2025 Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. In his first series as captain, Gill has not only led from the front but also rewritten the record books. The latest milestone came during the fifth Test at The Oval, where Gill, upon reaching 11 runs, took his series tally to 733 runs—surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's 732-run mark from the 1979 series against the West Indies. This feat now makes Gill the Indian captain with the most runs in a single Test series. Sitting third on the list is Virat Kohli, who amassed 655 runs against England in 2017—a record for an Indian batter against England that stood until Gill eclipsed it on Day Four of the fourth Test earlier in the series. So, who else features among India's top-scoring Test captains in a single series? Here is a look at the elite list. 2nd Time In 21st Century! Shubman Gill Equals Virat Kohli's Unwanted Record After...

Last Updated: Shubman Gill has matched Virat Kohli's record of losing all tosses in a five-Test series, extending India's streak to 15 consecutive toss losses in international cricket. Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill on Thursday equalled ace batter Virat Kohli's unwanted record, to lose all tosses in a five-Test series, after he lost his fifth against Ollie Pope ahead of the fifth Test at the Kennington Oval in London. This was the 14th time a side lost all five tosses in a series, the only previous one in the last 25 years coming during India's tour of England in 2018, when Kohli was the captain of the team. In 2018, India and England played five Tests in Birmingham, Lord's, Nottingham, Southampton and the Oval and Joe Root won all five tosses, while Kohli could win none. England went on to win the five-match Test series 4-1. With the series on the line and India trailing 1-2, the toss loss on Thursday extends a bizarre streak; India have now lost 15 successive tosses in international cricket. In 14 instances where a team has lost all five tosses in a five-match Test series, the team has managed to win the series just once, England in the 1953 Ashes at home under the captaincy of Leonard Hutton. Three of the previous 13 series ended in a draw, while the remaining nine ended in a loss for the side that lost every toss. A victory in London would make India just the fourth team to save or draw a series after losing all five tosses in a five-Test contest. Notably, for the seventh successive toss at the Oval, the team winning the toss has chosen to bowl first. This practice has extended through 22 successive first-class games at this venue for over two years now. Trailing 1-2, India made four changes to their playing XI, bringing in Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna in place of injured vice-captain Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur, Anshul Kamboj and ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND Vs ENG: The Oval Allowed 1444 Runs, 6 Hundreds And A Triple Century In Its Last Match

The last red-ball fixture at The Oval was a contest that was thoroughly dominated by batters with nearly 1500 runs being scored. India's England tour will conclude with the fifth Test at The Oval in London. The contest starts from Thursday (July 31) and its outcome will decide the fate of what has been a hard-fought series. India's terrific comeback to secure a draw in Manchester has kept the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy alive with England currently leading 2-1. The series was expected to be a trial by fire for an in-transition India squad especially in the absence of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin – each having retired from Test cricket. However, India batters, and bowlers to an extent, have been impressive. The batters have made hay in conditions which have traditionally suited fast bowlers. The likes of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant have scored over 400 runs each. This has been a breakthrough tour for Gill as far as his Test career is concerned. The India Test captain has polished his middling Test credentials with by racking up over 700 runs so far across eight innings. He looks set to achieve more milestones. And given how the pitch at The Oval behaved in its last first-class fixtures, the batters, from both the teams, will be licking their fingers. Incredible Run-Fest The Oval The venue not so long ago hosted a county championship match between Surrey and Durham. The match ended in a draw. And the pitch was absolute belter. Durham opted to bowl first and their bowlers were made to toil for nearly 162 overs by Surrey batters. Opener Dom Sibley led the run-fest with a triple-century – 305 off 475 – as Surrey racked up a mammoth total of 820/9 in 161.3 overs before showing mercy and declaring their first dig. Three other Surrey batters also recorded scores in triple-digits. Dan Lawrence made 178, Will Jacks cracked 94-ball 114 while Sam Curran struck 108 off 124. Durham's response was quite underwhelming as they were asked to follow-on after being bowled out for 362. Captain and opener Alex Lees was the lone centurion of their first innings. However, Durham openers join the fun while following on with Lees peeling off his second century of the match while Emilio Gray, who made 7 in the first dig, made 156 not out. Durham made 262/0 in 55.4 overs before the farce came to an end. A total of 1444 runs were scored across three innings with as many as six centuries and one triple-ton recorded across four days of play. Will the venue dish out another batting paradise? view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Manoj Tiwary corners BCCI after India vs Pakistan scheduled in Asia Cup: 'PM Modi said Operation Sindoor is still on'

A contentious call was made by cricket's governing bodies to schedule an Asia Cup tournament in the wake of the violence along the India-Pakistan border. The upcoming tournament, slated to take place between September 9 and September 28, will be held in the UAE, with the official release of the schedule marking September 14 as the date for the India-Pakistan clash. Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shaheen Afridi in action during the previous edition of the Asia Cup.(AFP) Many expected this match, if not the whole tournament, to be scratched off in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attacks in March, and the military response that followed from both sides. The cricketing boards and the Asian Cricket Council have come under further criticism for scheduling this match given the friction behind it. Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary, who now serves as a minister of state in West Bengal, came out in open criticism of the decision to hold this match. In an interview with ANI, the former batter made clear that the cricket match shouldn't go ahead. "I am against it. The India-Pakistan match should not be held. Especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which civilians have been killed. After that, Operation Sindoor has taken place,' said Tiwary, citing India's military response to the attacks which included aerial targeting of military and terrorist camps inside Pakistan. 'Our Prime Minister is saying…' "The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match. I feel that it should be considered again and the India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment,' continued the former Bengal batter. "Our Prime Minister is saying that the Operation Sindoor is still going on… How can we play a match with Pakistan?' Tiwary's comments follow from a last-minute cancellation of the match between legends from India and Pakistan in the ongoing World Championship of Legends taking place in the UK, which was called off after players such as Harbhajan Singh and the Pathan brothers made themselves unavailable, citing their unwillingness to play against Pakistan in the wake of pressure from fans at home. While the fate of this match and the Asia Cup as a whole remains uncertain and to be decided, India's desire to be accommodating and following the Olympic charter ahead of the planned bid for the 2036 Olympic Games is reportedly the reason for BCCI's agreement for the tournament to go ahead.

RCB Came Close To Sacking Virat Kohli In 2019, Make This Star Captain: Report

Star batter Virat Kohli is undoubtedly one of the greatest cricketers ever to play the gentleman's game. Apart from his vast contributions made for Team India in international cricket, Kohli has immensely contributed for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and took them to new heights. Being associated with the franchise since the inaugural season in 2008, Kohli played many match-winning knocks for them and even captained the team from 2013 to 2021. RCB won their maiden IPL title in 2025 under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, after beating Punjab Kings in the final. During Kohli's captaincy stint, RCB reached final in 2016 but lost against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite his strong show with the bat, Kohli was often criticised for his style of captaincy and RCB's title drought. Recently, former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, who was once a part of RCB's squad, revealed that the franchise was looking to sack Kohli from captaincy during IPL 2019 and planning to promote wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel as the new skipper. "Yes, I think he was. I'm quite sure he was. In the final year when Gary Kirsten was there-after the first year, I believe-Parthiv was in line to become captain. He had a brilliant cricketing brain," Moeen said on Sports Tak. "That was the talk at the time. I don't know what happened or why it didn't materialise, but I'm sure he was seriously considered for the role," he added. However, Kohli remained RCB's skipper in 2019 and stayed in the role before stepping down himself after 2021 to manage his workload. Talking about Parthiv, the former wicketkeeper-batter played 139 matches in the IPL and scored 2,848 runs. He also won multiple titles with Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. His last appearance came in 2019 with RCB. In IPL 2025, he joined Gujarat Titans as the mentor. RCB's IPL title drought came to an after thy defeated Punjab Kings in the summit clash of 2025 by just six runs.
